Jan Gerritse Dorland

According to the Oath of Allegiance taken in Kings County NY in September
1687, Jan Gerritse Dorland had immigrated to New York in 1652. (1) It is
estimated that he was born about 1640 which would make him about 12 years old
when he arrived. By looking at the patronymics of others in the area, Gerret
Gerretz Dorland and Styntje Gerrits Dorland appears to be his siblings. (2) His
brother, Gerret Dorland, is also listed in the 1687 Oath of Allegiance as
"Native." When this brother, Gerret Dorland, was deposed in 1741 he
gave his age as 86 making him born about about 1655, fifteen years after the
birth of Jan Gerritse Dorland, and three years after the family had emigrated to
New Amsterdam.
Jan Gerritse married Anna Remsen about 1669. (3) They had several children, but
only one baptismal record has been found. When their daughter Geertje was
baptized in 1674 the witnesses were Annetje's father, "Rem Janssen from Breuklen",
and Annetje's sister "Hille Remsen".
Lambert Janson Dorland, a probable cousin of
Jan Gerritse Dorland, came to New York in 1663. He married Hermetie Pieters and
when they baptized their daughter Elsie on 12 May 1678, one of the witnesses was
Annetje Rems, wife of Jan Gerritse Dorland. (5)
Jan settled first near the present Fulton Street Ferry. His property in 1683 was
valued at £123. (6) He was then living on 20 morgens of land, in Bedford on the
road from the ferry to Flatbush, which was a little under 40 acres of land.
In 1687 he was elected commissioner of Brooklyn. By 1692 their children
were starting to marry and Jan was a witness at the baptism for the infants born
to five of his children: Rem, Jannetje, Jan, Styntje and Marytje Dorland. (7)
