Descendants of John Self: Third Generation 10. Nathaniel3 SELF (Jethro2, John1)(7) was born in Georgia 12 or 2 MAY 1844. Birthday also given (1900 Census) as 1841. Nat died 22 MAY 1927 in Upson County, Ga., at 83 years of age. His body was interred 24 MAY 1927 in Upson County, Ga., Fellowship Baptist Cemetery. There are four unmarked children's graves and three unmarked adult graves in Nathaniel's plot.

He married Martha Ann VINING Self in Upson County, Ga., 15 MAR 1866. Martha was born in Georgia 23 JUL 1845. Census birth year given as 1846.

Martha died 20 APR 1938 in Upson County, Ga., at 92 years of age. Her body was interred 27 APR 1938 in Upson County, Ga., Fellowship Baptist Cemetery. Martha was buried April 27 by her estate in Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery, according to Stephens Funeral Home records.

In Upson County, Ga., after 1887. Martha, Emma, Lucinda and Mary Self were listed on the rolls of Fellowship Baptist Church, 1887-1904. Earlier church records were burned.

Martha was a midwife in Upson County, Ga., about 1909.

She resided in Upson County, Ga. before 15 MAR 1935. In the Smith's Locals column of the Thomaston Times: Mr. and Mrs. James Vining and Mr. and Mrs. Grady Vining and daughter spent Sunday afternoon with Mrs. Martha Ann Self. Siblings?

Nat was on a muster roll in Upson County, Ga., 4 MAR 1862. Nat Self, private, Upson Sentinels, Co. A, 46th Ga. Reg., Ga. Vol. Co., Army of Tennessee.

Nat borrowed money before SEP 1862 in Upson County, Ga. A.J. Self's estate included a note for $75 from Nathaniel Self.

Nat was captured in Nashville, Tenn., 16 DEC 1864. He was released from Camp Chase, Ohio, aUnion prison camp, on 13 JUN 1865. Family legend has it Nat walked home from Ohio. When he arrived, he was starved to the point his family did not recognize him; he had already been given up for dead. (In shades of The Odyssey, Evelyn Self Nelson said the family lore goes that only his old dog recognized him).

Nathaniel Self, 78, renter farm 62, family 62, Reeves Dist. 1336 (Ed. 187); uneduated; no occupation, he and his parents born in GA; Martha J. Self, 73, b. GA as were her parents; Eugenia L. Self, 48, educated, b. GA, no occupation.

Nathaniel SELF and Martha Ann VINING Self had the following children:

child 33 ii. Lucinda SELF was born in Upson County, Ga. 26 FEB 1869. Lula died 9 JUL 1870 in Upson County, Ga., at 1 year of age. Her body was interred after 9 JUL 1870 in Upson County, Ga., Fellowship Baptist Cemetery.

child 34 iii. Emma Leola SELF Smith was born in Georgia 16 APR 1870. 1900 census gives birthdate as April 1872. Emma died 21 OCT 1951 at 81 years of age. She married Julius SMITH in Upson County, Ga., 4 MAR 1890. H.P. Bloodworth, NPJP, performed the ceremony. Family tradition holds the marriage lasted less than three days, and Emma was loath to admit it ever happened at all.

Emma was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Upson County, Ga., after 1887 along with Martha, Lucinda and Mary Self, church rolls, 1887-1904. Earlier church records were burned. She was a resident in the census report in Upson County, Ga., 1 JUN 1900, widowed and living with her parents in 1900.

child 35 iv. Eugenia L. SELF was born in Georgia 1872. The birth date of April 1872 is given for Emma in 1900. She could read; write. On the 1920 Census in Upson County, Ga., Eugenia, 48 and single, was living with her parents.

child 36 v. Willie Nathaniel SELF was born in Upson County, Ga. 13 JUN 1880. Willie died 10 JAN 1892 in Upson County, Ga., at 11 years of age. His body was interred in Upson County, Ga., Fellowship Baptist Cemetery.
