Narrative

Hampshire Advertiser Saturday 09 December 1871

Alton Petty Sessions, Tuesday
Magistrates present: Mr E Cole (in the chair) and Mr Wickham.

Poaching

Jacob Fitt and John Fairminer both of Selbourne, were charged with stealing a rabbit and a rabbit wire, the property of the Hon J.T. Dutton.
George Bone, a gamekeeper to Mr Dutton deposed.
On the 23rd of November last, a few minutes before 7 in the morning I was watching two wires, one with a rabbit in it, in a meadow belonging to Mr Shotter at Priory Selbourne. The two defendants came from the direction of Selbourne and went direct to the wires.
One took up one wire and the other the wire with the rabbit. Defendants ran away and myself and a man named Cozens, who was with me, followed them. I caught Fairminer and asked him what he was about but he gave no answer. I found wires and stumps in his pocket. Neither of the defendants had any business where they were.
Fairminer was fined 10s 6d or twenty one days, and Fitt 14s 6d and 10s 6d costs, or one month's imprisonment.
