Notes for Emiline E. (Spouse 1)
Emeline did have several additional brothers and sisters besides Varnum, including brothers who served and died in the Civil War. They stayed generally in the upstate New York area, while the next two generations headed west to Michigan. Emeline was married to Charles G. Gould, whose family was a New York/Vermont settler group. They had a 200 acre sheep farm near Canton, NY, through the mid 1800's. She was known as a great walker, and I have a copy of an article from a New York newspaper describing how she walked 14 miles in one day from her home into Canton, (and 14 miles back a day later), to visit her granddaughter, Mrs. Howard. What's special about that is she was 85 years old at the time! Both my mother and my aunt had told stories about Grandma Gould taking off walking when she visited Bay City, (Michigan), often walking to see other grandchildren at their homes miles away.

Emeline died in Canton at age 99, a few months before her 100th birthday, in 1922. She was buried from Mrs. Howard's home, which was in a very nice part of town according to the local funeral home, by a well-known Baptist minister in the area. You asked about the Seventh Day Baptists, and I believe she was part of the regular Baptist tradition. It does give me more ideas and places to look for family info, though.1248
