EDWARD HYLAND (Abt. 1790-1875) Son of Edward Hyland & Catherine McGrath
MARGARET HENNELY (Abt.1800-1877)

Edward was born in Kilmaine County Mayo where all of his children were born. They emigrated to america in 1849and settled in Saratoga Springs NY before moving to a farm in Lakeville Twp. MN some time prior to 1857. Some time after 1860 this Edward and his wife moved to a farm in Empire Twp.

Children

Edward died in June 28, 1875 and is in Highland Cemetery. Margaret went to live with her widowed daughter, Mrs. Garvey. She is thought to have died on Feb. 22, 1877 although the 1880 census lists her as still living with Garvey family. It is likely that she is with her husband at Highand Cemetery in an unmarked grave. All of these children remained in the Lakeville.

EDWARD HYLAND (1830-1906)? Son of James Hyland & Bridget Flynn
HONORA GRIMES ( - ) (Parents Unknown)

Edward was the one son of James and Bridget that apparently remained on the family farm in Kilmaine. Nothing is known about him or his family at this time. Edward's wife may have been Gromley or Grimes ? Kilmaine records show both names. There is an Edward Hyland that died in 1906 and is in the cemetery at Kilmaine. The tombstone was erected by a Bridget Hyland from the U. S. It is however unclear whether or not this is the same Edward. I was unable to locate this stone during a visit to Ireland. However I did locate a stone for another Edward Hyland at Kilmaine who died in 1897 at the age of 68 which would be a more likely candidate.

Children

Bridget (1864- )
Mary ? (1865- )
John (1867- )
James (1869- ) Hassen??? ( ) (Kilmaine Ireland ??)

There may have been more children from the marriage but no information is available at this time. This James had four children named Patrick, Edward (Priest), Nora and John. All were single and were still living on the family homestead in Kilmaine as of 1980. Nora apparently visited Minnesota some time in the early 1980s and was the source of this information. Nora died in Kilmaine in October of 1996. She was survived her brother the Rev. Edward Hyland who is supposedly the last remaining member of this line.

JOHN HYLAND (1826-1913) Son of James Hyland & Bridget Flynn
MARY VARLEY (1831-1910)

John was born in Kilmaine County Mayo and emigrated with his family to New York. John and Mary were married 1856 and by 1857 were located on a farm in section 11 in Lakeville MN. where all of their children were born.

Children

John died May 20, 1912. Mary died Jan. 18, 1910 Both are at St. Josephs Cemetery in Rosemount MN. Their sons, James and John, left the area. John went to work for the railroad out west and was killed in a work related accident. Marie married a local farmer.

PATRICK HYLAND (1835-1928) Son of James Hyland & Bridget Flynn
MARY KILROY (1835-1871) Dau. of Martin Kilroy & Mary Walsh

Patrick was born in Kilmaine County Mayo and emigrated to the U.S. about 1860 with his parents settling first in Saratoga NY., by 1862 he was located on a farm in sections 11, 12 &13 of Lakeville MN. Patrick appears to have married Mary in 1862 at St. Paul MN. There was a Kilroy family located in the area during the 1860s and they may have been relatives of Mary. In 1870 there were three additional people living with this family that had the Hyland name. They were Bridget, John, and Jackson Hyland. They were apparently related but the relationship is unclear.

Children

On Oct. 30, 1870 Mary Kilroy died along with two other children leaving four children to be raised by Patrick. In July 1874 Patrick took Mary Dwyer as his second wife. Nothing is known about her except that she was a widow and county records indicate a civil marriage with Patrick. Mary was apparently born in Virginia on July 1,1856.

James farmed with his brother Thomas in NY and purchased the farm when Thomas moved to Minnesota. Julia was born May 1 1829 in County Tipperary, Ireland. There is no information on the date or location of his marriage to Julia but most of his children were born in New York. He and his family moved to a farm in Lakeville about 1975 where their last known child was born.

When Julia died Feb 16, 1898, James died Oct. 23, 1906. They are both at St. Josephs in Rosemount MN. Their last child appears on the census records up until 1895 but there is no record of death or burial. He in not listed as one of Julia's survivors. James was institutionalized some time prior to 1879 at Hastings where he died in 1906. Ellen Devitt (Mrs. T. E.) was listed as an aunt to Miss Bernice Clancy of St. Paul. It is not clear how they are related. This Ellen is also said to have had an Aunt living in Mechanicsville NY in 1911.

[NOTE: The two youngest children, William and Mary, may also be the William and Mary listed in the family of their elder brother, Edward F. Hyland.  Also, some family researchers list a daughter, Julia, presumed to have died before the family arrived in Minnesota, as a child of James and Julia.]

THOMAS HYLAND (1827-1899) Son of Edward Hyland & Margaret Hennely
MARY MAHONEY (1831-1912) Dau of Patrick Mahoney & Kate Loftus

Thomas Hyland was born Nov. 13, 1827 in Killmaine County Mayo and emigrated to the US in 1848. He initially worked as laborer digging canals. About 1850 he purchased a farm Saratoga Springs NY. where he was married at St. Peter's church in Nov. 13, 1854. Mary was born in the parish of Ashford, County Mayo. Some records list her mother's maiden name as Cummings. Her name may have actually been Mahaney. She came to the U.S. about 1853. In 1870 there was a Julia Mahoney residing with this family and she may have been related in some way. In 1855 after the birth of their first child, Thomas sold his farm to James Hyland and moved west to Lakeville MN where he settled a farm in sections 1 & 2.of that township.

At the turn of the century Daniel was apparently working as a customs officer in Baudette MN. At some point Daniel was committed to an asylum for the mentally ill and is said to have escaped sometime in 1922.
