    What’s in a letter? By Ralph Wadleigh,Jr.
Hopefully you are one of the lucky ones with a box of old family letters saved by your mother and her mother before her, full of family and community news. Well, so am I! Family letters can be a prime source of valuable information for genealogists and family historians. In my case, I am fortunate to have had passed on to my generation a series of twenty eight letters written between October 28, 1848 and June 19, 1852 by Emily Hart Wells of Wethersfield, CT to her older brother Stephen Morgan Wells (my maternal great-grandfather) The letters describe daily events back home on the family farm and in the Wethersfield community. Stephen had left home to work on a surveying crew in New York State. Below
is her letter dated September 3, 1851 written from Wethersfield. Emily is just short of her 19th birthday
and Stephen will be 21on September 25. While reading the letter, see if you can imagine the farmhouse
and the surrounding area. Also as a genealogist, notice how many trails can be followed based on the
    names mentioned in the letter!

    Wethersfield, Sept. 3, 1851
    My dear Stephanus:
Do you wonder what has become of me, or what ails my pen that I have not answered your letter
before? I can easily inform you, for you know I was always good at making excuses to free myself from
all blame. One excuse is that we have been expecting an answer to the last letter we wrote you, for we
thought that as Uncle William is not coming you would write as you said you would, that we might know
about directing your things. Some of them are purchased, but Grandma really thinks that you are
coming home, as you have not written for sometime. I have not bought the books you sent for, neither
have I subscribed for the Phrenological Journal, but I will do both as soon as you write. Don’t you have
too much faith in Phrenology for I don’t want you to get engaged in it too deeply. Gid. is in school in
Hartford and boards at Wait Griswold’s. He has a new Latin grammar, so that you can have yours if you
WELLESPRINGS Autumn 2004 … fifth bucket
wish it. I don’t know how soon he will want your Virgil, but I presume not for two or three months, and if
you will be home by that time, we will send them.
I have been to Brooklyn since I wrote last, and I enjoyed myself better than I expected to. The
people there are exceedingly polite, and they treated us with a great deal of attention. Mrs. Gallup came
to Hartford and Kate and I went home with her. We started at 5.00 o’clock in the morning and had a
most delightful ride. I never enjoyed a ride in the cars so well before; for there was only very few
passengers, and we could do just as we pleased. We went to the door and sung and saw the sunrise. Mr.
Palmer Gallup, a brother of our Mr. Gallup who lives in Philadelphia, went part of the way with us. We
went to ride several times as Mr. G. has a fine horse and somebody else has one like it and he puts them
together and has quite a handsome pair. We went to the “Wolf’s Den in Pomfret where Putnam killed the
wolf. It is a very wild place. We had a little party to accompany us, and we all carried our suppers, made
a fire, boiled water for tea, spread a tablecloth on a large rock and had a first rate supper. Wasn’t it
romantic? Kate and I brought home a hickory cane to each of our father’s as a relic. I don’t know
whether father will have it polished or not. If he don’t you can have it when you come home.
Stephen, you must write as often as once in two weeks if you want we should have any peace in the
house. We all want to hear from you as often, even if you can get time to write but little, but Grandma is
almost distracted and imagines all sorts of evils concerning you. Perhaps it is not very wrong for you to
write Sundays if you cannot get any other time for it. Grandma has just brought out the Bible and wants
me to write you the first chapter of Ecclesiastes but it will take up considerable room, so you can read it
    from the Bible.
Dr. Tucker and his family have returned and it really seems very pleasant to see them home again.
Somebody told me that he and his wife were going to the White Mountains next week, and that he is
going to ascend. I think it seems almost ridiculous for him to drag his not remarkably light body up there
when on account of his near-sightedness he cannot see anything after he gets there.
Wethersfield is fast filling up with ladies. Fanny and Mary Marsh are here. I called on them day
before yesterday. Fanny inquired for you. There is a very pretty young lady visiting at Mrs. Chester’s,
Sophia Chester. She is a sweet singer and plays very well. Lizzie Robbins and her sister are expected
today. So you see we have any quantity of “belles” but no “beaux.” Even Leonard has deserted us. I don’t
know where he has gone for he went away during my absence. Ed. Robbins is alone in his glory. Silas
went home from church last Sunday evening with Jane J. and I must tell you one of her performances.
Yesterday she was at Mr. Bucks at the Society and after she had finished her work, she went out with
Eunice to get some pears. All at once she came running in and got her things and said she must go home,
for she had just thought of something. I told her if she would wait a few minutes, I would let her ride
home with me, but no she must go then. She just got out of the gate and Silas came along with a wagon
full of goods and she asked him if she could ride to which he readily assented and they went off together.
Eunice said she could not imagine what made Jane leave the pear tree so suddenly, and she looked to see
if anyone was coming, and spied Silas’ red wagon ever so far off. We had a good laugh about Jane’s farsightedness.
While I was in Brooklyn Mr. Brockway spent the Sabbath in Wethersfield. He is really
engaged to Jane Woodhouse and they correspond regularly. I hear he is doing very well. A brother of his
is in the prison now. He looks a little like his brother, but is younger. Mr. McKeown has entered a
theological institution in New York and is preparing himself to be an Episcopal minister. Archie Welch
has been at home for some time. Charissa and Moses are in Saratoga and board at Dr. North’s where
cousin Lucretia and Ellen are staying. Sarah Wells and I think of taking a horse-back ride to Newington
this afternoon, and if we get home in time I shall take this letter to the office, but if not I must wait until
tomorrow when we go to the preparatory lecture. The tree you wrote about is growing finely. Five of
those slips are alive and are very flourishing. The damask rose had one blossom on it, but none of the
others has blossomed. I suppose they will next year. The roses in front of the house grow beautifully, but
all the ivy and some of the roses on the east side of the house have been pulled down. The bank has been
made a little lower and more even so that it looks much better. I suppose Aunt Mary, her son and
daughter will be here by the first of next week. I hardly think I shall go home with them. Don’t you think,
WELLESPRINGS Autumn 2004 … sixth bucket
lessons? I am all the time wishing I understood French and it seems as it would be very convenient to go
Mondays and Fridays when Gid. goes and comes. I can drive either of the horses anywhere now. I am
going to speak to Father about the French and if he is willing, I shall be delighted. Oh dear! I’m afraid he
won’t be, but never mind, it will be all for the best I suppose.
The onion seed is cut and they are getting in tobacco and it looks very well. Father is building a
shanty at the front end of the barn 30 ft. high. Not much of an ornament to be sure but I believe there
was no other place for it.
We have had some very fine peaches from your young trees. Peaches are not generally good this
year. The sugar apples were very large, and nice. The plums are very good but are nearly gone and the
white grapes are beginning to ripen. You cannot complain that I do not give you long letters but that I
think is their only merit. Kate Buck showed me a letter which Daniel Webster wrote to her Aunt, Mr.
Dudley Buck, a week ago. She used to be a great friend of hers and was in her father’s family a great
deal. The letter was miserably written and in a very old fashioned style, but was very well expressed. It
was a humble apology for not having recognized her at the White Mountains a short time since.
Jimmy Goodrich has recovered, but part of his palate is gone and there is a hole in his throat
somewhere. He cannot speak distinctly at all but they are hoping he will after a while. He will not be able
to go back to New Haven at present.
Mother and Grandma, Father and the boys are all well and send a great quantity of love to you.
Guy has a very hard cold, but all of the rest are perfectly well. Please write as soon as you receive this for
we are very anxious to hear from you. Cousin Robert Douglas has returned and gone with Mr. Haven’s
family to Sharon Springs. He has some eruption on his face which makes him look dreadfully. Take good
care of yourself and write soon to Emilia.
Hope you enjoyed reading this newsy letter. Doesn’t Emily sound like a wonderful young lady?
She certainly impresses as a caring, educated and personable individual. Isn’t her description of country
life in the mid 19th century rather appealing? What about the prison? The Connecticut State Prison was
located in Wethersfield at the time. Happily the 1850 US Census shows a F.R. Brockway employed as a
clerk, not a prisoner! Now go to those old boxes up in the attic, find some of your old family letters to
    read and start an adventure!
Emily married Jonathan Barnes on 12 September 1860 in Wethersfield, had a son, Jonathan on
31 July 1864 in Darien, CT where her husband was minister of the First Congregational Church.
Tragically, he died unexpectedly on 31 May 1866. After many years, Emily married secondly, Samuel
Penniman Leeds, pastor of the Church of Christ at Hanover, NH. She died in Hanover 15 August 1913.
Stephen returned to Wethersfield, married Sarah Tate of New London on 5 March 1856, fathered
eight children, ran a successful farm, and died in Wethersfield 28 October 1906.
Emily was the daughter of Romanta Welles, # 1435, pg. 100 of the “Descendants of Gov. Thomas
Welles and his wife, Alice Tomes through their son, John Welles”, by D.H.Siemiatkoski, 1995.
Thanks Ralph for sharing this interesting letter with us all.; Principal=Stephen Morgan Welles
