    JEFFERSON COUNTY JOURNAL, ADAMS, N. Y., TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 1895.
    Jerome Wells died on Thursday morning, Sept. 26, after a lingering illness, aged 55 years and 4 months. He was born at Three Mile Bay and was the son of Buell and Asenath Wells; was a farmer by occupation and resided for many years in the Town of Lorraine. He removed to Pierrepont Manor two years ago and rented what was known as the Robinson farm. For the past year his health was failing, during which time he was kept closely to the house. Mr. Wells was a soldier in the civil war and a member of the 10th N. Y. heavy artillery; a man of excellent judgment, and as a neighbor one of the most kindly and obliging. In his illness he always showed a patience quite remarkable for one with the physical infirmities he endured. He will be much missed by a large circle of friends and leaves three sisters, Miss Charlotte Wells, of this village, Mrs. Ingersoll, of Pulaski and Mrs. Charles Bentley, of Adams. There was a short service at the house Saturday morning conducted by Rev. W. J. Hancock. The burial was at Three Mile Bay. Funeral Director Larned had charge.

    CAPE VINCENT EAGLE, THURSDAY, JULY 23, 1914.
    An excerpt from a history of the pioneer Wells family:
    Mr. Wells was also assessor and supervisor of Lyme. In 1856 he served, during the winter, in the Assembly at Albany; was taken sick with varioloid (smallpox) and died April 8, 1856. The N. Y. Central Railroad furnished a car gratuitous for the occasion, and Hon. Hart Massey, Hon. William Penfield, and O. V. R. Horton, of Chaumont, accompanied the remains to their final resting place, the family cemetery on the farm.

    THE CAPE VINCENT EAGLE, THURSDAY, JULY 16, 1914.
    The following original poem, written by George E. Herrick and read by him at the annual reunion of the Wells family, held recently at Three Mile Bay, is published at the request of a number of our Bay subscribers:

    Some family scion asked to explain
    What gave Wells Settlement its name?
    Might answer I've heard of some who tells
    From early settlers by name of Wells.
    But whence they came, and how long ago,
    Might answer, perhaps, I do not know.
    And later still might come a time,
    They might seek in vain for the family line;
    And however much they might desire
    The lineage of great or great-great-grandsire,
    Might, in research, find some link dropped
    Blurred by failing memory's blot.

    But a history of progenitors whom we revere,
    Made now, and kept, might make all clear,
    Of forbears who came long years ago
    To this northern clime of frost and snow;
    And while fond memory still retains
    Knowledge of honored ancestral names
    May their lives and character inspire
    Grateful remembrance of worthy sires.

    The first progenitors, of whom we know,
    Came from Wales over a century ago,
    And in Herkimer county made their home,
    Where eight sturdy sons were to manhood grown.
    One daughter was also born to cheer
    Their lives, but died aged fifteen years,
    Of father, also, were then bereft,
    And mother and eight sons then were left;
    Who soon after decided to emigrate
    To the Northern part of New York state,
    Where land was cheap, and to reconnoiter
    Isaac came north to Sackets Harbor
    To locate a place for farms and home,
    Which each might proudly call his own,
    And by mutual aid and helpfulness
    Insure their object with success.

    From there, where others had blazed the way
    He came to a hamlet called Three Mile Bay
    And after time in investigation spent
    Selected this tract called Wells Settlement.
    Then came those other seven brothers,
    Accompanied by their widowed mother,
    With all their household goods possessed,
    To found homes in this Northern wilderness.

    Eight single men inured to toil,
    Began to build and clear the fertile soil;
    Named Nathaniel, Isaac, Joseph, and Garry,
    Selden and Buel, James and Harry.

    In eighteen nineteen they at length arrived,
    Where all but Selden spent their future lives,
    From the county of Herkimer, as pioneers,
    Over unbridged streams to a country dear.

    Not in palace cars propelled by steam,
    Nor in autos driven by gasoline,
    Nor in covered carriages on easy springs,
    Nor in aeroplanes propelled by wings,
    But cart and oxen, and perhaps horse team,
    On ferries over which to cross the streams,
    Brave and undaunted they forward pressed
    To begin life in clearing their lands possessed.

    But finding they couldn't succeed alone
    And woman was needed to make a home.
    Nathaniel, to live in sweet accord,
    Took for his wife Miss Alice Ford.
    Then Isaac, impressed with the marriage litany,
    Chose for his partner Miss Maria Whitney.
    And for a helpmate to cheer his life
    Emeline Vincent became Joseph's wife.
    Garry and Selden fortunes unite
    In marriage with Ellena and Nancy White;
    And Buell to the altar a wife to lead,
    Selected for his Miss Genie Reed.
    Harry and James, not to be left out,
    Chose Amelia and Betsy Osterhout.
    The fruits ot these happy unions formed
    Was six and thirty children to them born.

    Behold, how changed the times and ways
    Compared with our forefathers' days;
    Struggling for shelter, food and dress,
    Left them little time to read or rest;
    They builded houses,
    Chopped and cleared the land,
    Raised flax and wool,
    To card and spin by hand,
    Illumed their homes by candle light
    And warmed and cooked by a fireplace bright.

    We can scarcely comprehend the toil
    Of those pioneers who cleared the soil,
    Laid out highways and bridged the streams,
    While, of a better future planned and dreamed.
    They caused the wilderness to be transformed
    Into fields of golden, yellow corn.
    And in place of brush and lofty trees
    Saw grass and grain wave in the breeze.
    One in the state assembly position gained,
    And church officials others became;
    As good citizens all stood the test,
    And ranked with those who were counted best.
    They lived, before they passed away,
    To enjoy the blessings of modern days.
    Of the generation succeeding five or six survive
    To pay homage to worthy ancestors' lives.
    Of the third and fourth, some here we see,
    Upon whom will be left the care of this cemetery.
    May they ne'er neglect this sacred spot,
    Nor their annual gatherings be forgot.
    Descendents of this sturdy, honored race,
    We have met again at this pleasant trysting place;
    And from the tombs of our cherished dead,
    Removed the debris from each lowly bed.
    The mystery of life and death was told
    When God's breath made man a living soul;
    Formed of dust - its casket but an earthy clod
    But the soul has returned to the giver, God.

    May this blest assurance our future cheer,
    That their ashes only are resting here,
    And at dawn of resurrection morn
    Into more glorious bodies will be transformed.
