  N.T. WELLS PASSES AWAY AT SIOUX CITY WEDNESDAY
  LAST CIVIL WAR VETERAN OF THIS COUNTY
  Services were held in the Methodist Church Friday afternoon for N.T. Wells, the last Civil War Vetern of Cherokee County. Rev. Faul, officiated and the American Legion was in charge.
  Pallbearers were American Legion members Otto Strampe, Ray Walsh, John Apel, Dr. Simonsen, Roger Leavitt and Dr. Joynt.
  Music was furnished by a men's quartette composed of: Stanley Addy, Ivan Addy, Fred Mossman and Mr. Morford. Mrs. Fred Mossman accompanied them on the piano.
  Rev. Faul acted as Chaplain and presented the flag draping the casket to the family. Rev. Faul used as his text the 90th Psalm, "Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations, Thou art God." He stressed the passing of time and the events of many generations, but called attention to the fact that the insistent truth of God extends throughout all generations. This truth was evidenced and revealed through Christ, who by his coming had changed all life, especially the terrors of death. Through Christ, whoever will, can gain this victory in life and death.
  Nicholas T. Wells was born at Wellsville, Mo. October 25, 1845, and passed away in Sioux City, Iowa on April 14, 1943 at the age of 97 years 5 months and 20 days. Mr. Wells had five brothers and five sisters, all of whom preceded him in death. Mr. Wells was the last Civil War Veteran in Cherokee County. He enlisted in the Union Army on May 10, 1864, joining Company K 40th Regular Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers and saw service at Memphis, Tenn. Mr. Wells was a member of Custer Post No. 25 G.A.R. and had taken part in various encampments. Mr. Wells had always enjoyed these occasions and had received a great deal of pleasure from the various courtesies shown him by the local American Legion.
  Mr. Wells was a member of the Marcus Methodist Church and had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for 66 years. The Lodge members attended the service in body.
  He married Jane Parker of Lancaster, Wis., October 25, 1871. In 1877 the Wells family moved to Pottawatomie County, Iowa, where they resided until 1883 when they moved to Cherokee County, settling on a farm in Tilden township. In 1911 Mr. and Mrs. Wells and daughter Edith moved to Marcus. Mrs. Wells preceded her husband in death about one year ago. Mr. and Mrs. Wells celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary October 25, 1941.
  In addition to operating a large farm, Mr. Wells was engaged in buying livestock and shipping to the Chicago and Sioux City markets for a number of years.
  Mr. and Mrs. Wells were the parents of five children: Edith N. deceased, Ernest S. deceased, Ben D. of Sioux City, Vilas D. of Pierson and Chester A. of Sibley. There are five grandchildren living and seven great-grandchildren.
  Interment was in the Marcus-Amherst Cemetery with the American Legion in charge.

  Taps Sounded for
  Cherokee County's
  last 'Old Soldier'
  Taps were sounded Friday afternoon for Cherokee county's last Civil war veteran, Nicholas T. Wells, 97, who died in a Sioux City nursing home Wednesday following a long illness.
  Friends and relatives attended services held at the Marcus Methodist church.
  The Rev. Fremont Paul, pastor of the church, who officiated at the final rites, used as his theme, "God of All tho Ages", basing his sermon on the text of the 90th Psalm.
  Stressing the various conflicts of the ages, tho minister asserted that God was the God of all these ages.
  "We don't look upon any of these ages, but on all the ages for what God has meant to the world," he said. "While we look backward and forward, yet throughout all the ages the evident fact is that we have a truth on which to build and a truth that will endure."
  A male quartet composed of Ivan Addy, Stanley Addy, Fred Mossman and Mr. Morford, sang three selections. Mrs. Mossman provided accompaniment.
  Members of the Marcus American Legion post were pallbearers.
  At the Marcus cemetery where burial was made, the American legion guard of honor fired a final salute and Kenneth Polson sounded taps. The flag from the casket was presented to the relatives according to custom
