Silas R. Houghton, resident of San Bernardino for 45 years, died Sunday at his home, 1420 Waterman avenue. He was 75 years old and a native of Saratoga Hot Springs, N. Y.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Silas R. Houghton, of San Bernardino, and a brother, J. C. Houghton, of Reedley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. Wednesday from Mark B. Shaw memorial chapel. Burial will be in Mountain View cemetery.

Stewart W. Houghton Sr., 91, a longtime resident of Paso Robles, died Friday, Oct. 9, 2001, in Templeton.

A memorial service will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Roses in Atascadero. Burial will follow at the Paso Robles District Cemetery.

Mr. Houghton was born Oct. 18, 1910, in Pasadena and moved to Mariposa in 1939. In 1943 he moved to Paso Robles where he was a rancher, builder and "Jack of all trades."

Mr. Houghton is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gertrude Houghton; son, Stewart W. Houghton Jr. of Atascadero; daughter, Nancy Houghton of Sunland; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Elise Ann Houghton Holman of Grants Pass, Ore.

Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of the Roses of Atascadero.7

ObituarySarah Houghton Graveside Rites To Be In Reedley Graveside services for Sarah Jane Houghton, 79. will be Monday at 2 o'clock at the Reedley cemetery in Reedley. A native of Trempealeau, Wis., she and her husband, the late Jay C. Houghton Sr.. left the midwest in 1910. moving to San Bernardino. They later homesteaded in Utah and then moved to Los Angeles where they resided until 1927. She and her husband then ranched until his death in 1938 in Fresno county. She lived there until 1952 when she moved to Santa Cruz. She died yesterday in a local hospital after a long illness. Mrs. Houghton made her home at 1906 Ocean street. Her survivors include three dauphters. Mrs. Olive Hanks. Tulsa, Okla., Mrs. Myrtle M. Greggs, Boulder Creek, and Mrs. Frances Knowlton of San Francisco: three sons, Dudley Houghton. Glendale, Jay Houghton, Boulder Creek, and Kenneth Houghton, U.S. navv; also survived by 12 grand children and 12 great-grandchildren.

Biography1859 - Oil discovered in Titusville, PA.

1865 - Edwin F. Houghton and partners establish a business to study the needs of various industrial processes and manufacture appropriate fluids for metal working industry.

1867 - Houghton introduces its first recorded commercial product, the “Cosmic Counter Corrodent” rust preventive.

1870 - Aaron E. Carpenter joins Houghton as an investment capital partner, to expand the company’s progress in petroleum refining. Gradually assuring responsibility for directing the company, Carpenter became principal director in the 1870’s during which period both of the Houghton brothers passed away.

1874 - Houghton received Franklin Institute medal for achievements in the manufacturing of greases and oils.

1876 - Houghton receives medal of the Centennial Exposition.

1878-79 - Houghton involved in lawsuit with major pharmaceutical company defending its claim to the invention of white petrolatum, later called Vaseline.

1881 - Charles E. Carpenter, son of Aaron, joins company. Houghton expands to new headquarters in Philadelphia’s leather tanning district.

1888 - Louis Murphy joins company as Carpenter’s office boy and begins to rise through company ranks.

1900-05 - Houghton becomes involved in manufacture of mechanical leathers and belting. The company’s VIM belts would become famous for their quality.

1906 - Charles E. Carpenter assumes leadership of company.

1908 - First issue of the company’s journal, The Houghton Line published.

1909 - Charles E. Carpenter, son of Aaron, established first international partnership with Edgar Vaughan & Co. of England.

1910 - Company incorporated as E. F. Houghton & Co.

1927 - William F. MacDonald joins Houghton’s financial office.
