Notes
Friedrich, Philipena, and their first two sons came from Nassau, a small region in what is now the Western part of Germany. At the time Friedrich lived there, Nassau was a member of the German Confederation, a collection of states formed in an attempt to unify the German nation. The Confederation broke up in 1866 and Nassau was annexed by Prussia. This is probably the reason that in 1870, Friedrich gave his birthplace as Prussia, while elsewhere he gave Nassau or Germany.1,4,10,2,5
Freidrich and Phillipina, with their sons Rhinehart and Lewis, immigrated to the US in 1856. They sailed from Bremen in steerage aboard the ship "Johann Lange" and arrived in New York on 8 Oct.1
They settled in Galion, Crawford County, Ohio where Friedrich went to work as a blacksmith. At that time, Galion was a major railroad junction, and he most likely was working for one of the railroads.4,10
There were two other families from Nassau who immigrated on the same ship as Friedrich's family and also settled in Galion. One was the family of Ludwig Martin and his wife(?) Henriette (see separate entry), who might have been relatives of Friedrich. The other was the family of Joseph H. and Christine Schmidt. When they reached Galion, the Schmidts Americanized their names to "Smith".1
