Notes
Nelson Clark and Joseph Hart have headstones side-by-side in a fenced plot in Rodney Cemetery. They have matching stones that appear to me to be too new, and to have too much information to be the originals. The transcription of these two stones that is in "Mississippi Bible and Cemetery Records" (S4809) was done in 1955 and gives different text. I'm assuming that the 1955 survey listed the original stones and that new ones were made sometime later. This may have been when the fence was erected, too.
Some researchers have Nelson's parents as Amasa Clark and Sarah Blackwood
Canandaigua, Ontario County, New YorkFamily tradition has Nelson's birthplace as Canandaigua, Ontario County, New York. This is supported by the 1860 and 1870 censuses that have his birthplace as New York, and his burial marker, which says he was born in "Canadayna, NY" (this stone is probably not the original, and the inscription may be based on the tradition). The 1850 census entry has Nelson's birthplace as Ohio, but I haven't found any other evidence to support that statement.
1870Between 1866 and 1870, Nelson moved directly across the river from Rodney to Tensas Parrish, LA where he lived with his son, Nelson Howard. I don't know the reason he moved, but there was a big fire in Rodney in 1869 that burned much of the town and it may be that the fire destroyed Nelson's hotel.
