MilitarySolomon Cox served as a Private in the North Carolina militia in the Revolutionary War.

On 7 June, 1838, Solomon appeared in the Court of Equity in Edgefield District, SC to obtain a pension under the act of Congress of 7 June 1832. His testimony included a retelling of his Revolutionary War service. The pertinent parts of his statement follow:

"That he first volunteered in...1778 in Cumberland County North Carolina under Capt Thomas Hadley for three months. That said company was attached to a Regiment commanded by Col. Thomas Armstrong. That said company was employed by the Col. as a scout for the county during the term of three months.

That immediately after his discharge from his first tour of duty that he volunteered under Capt. Jacob Duck for three months that said company was attached to a Regiment of militia commanded by Col. Philip Alston of said county. That during that [tour of duty?] that he was taken a prisoner with several other of said company by a British company commanded by a Captain Mc[Iver?]. That a few days afterwards, that he was retaken by Capt Ducks company. That he was discharged by [?] Cap'n after having served his three months and immediately after volunteered under the same officer for three months more.

That he afterwards volunteered under Captains, that he does not recollect the names of the different captains that he served under afterwards but that the companys to [which he was?] attached were attached to [Regiments?] commanded by Col Thomas Childs Col ___ Mathews and Col Wade. That while under the command of Col Wade, that he was in an attack made by said Regiment against the British & Torys on Drowning Creek, the British & Torys command[ed] by a Col [?].

That after that he was taken at Hillsborough while on duty at the time that Governor Burk was taken by the British. That he was handcuffed and marched with the other prisoners for Wilmington in North Carolina. That on the third or fourth day that a Cap't William King a citizen of North Carolina but attached to the British service assisted him in making his escape by passing him by the sentinels at night.

The applicant further states that he had [the?] commanded a scout sent in pursuit of Cap't deCloud a tory. That he succ[eeded?] in capturing him with several others and carried them over to Salisbury Court House and there put them in jail.

The applicant states that he continued in actual service as a volunteer with the militia from the year 1778 to the close of the war. That his service was confined to the state of North Carolina. That he was in [one?] instance sent [as] as pilot to a Maj. Lewis to South Carolina."1
