- In June 1871, Harlow E. Woodward began publishing "The Old Curiosity Shop," containing stories, short essays, poetry, selected matter and foreign correspondence. A piece in qwiwqThe Farmer's Cabinetqw/iwq of 22 jun 1871 says:
qwblockquotewq"THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP" is the title of a new magazine, which hails from Boston, published by Harlow E. Woodward. The first number opens well containing 44 pages of reading matter. Terms only $1.00 to all who subscribe before August first : Copies may be had at W. R. Clark's in this place, Coburn's Bookstore, Milford, and of all newsdealers.qw/blockquotewq
The qwiwqBoston Daily Advertiserqw/iwq takes a less positive position:
qwblockquotewqqwiwqThe Old Curiosity Shopqw/iwq is the title of a new monthly magazine, with the imprint of Harlow E. Woodward, Boston. The first number, dated July 1, is now ready. It contains stories, short essays, poetry, selected matter and foreign correspondence of a character similar to that which goes to the making up of weekly literary papers. Each number is to contain forty pages, and the subscription price is one dollar a year. People intending to purchase the Atlantic Monthly must take care not to be deceived by this stranger, which has a cover hypocritically like our old friend. For sale by A. A later review by the qwiwqBangor Daily Whig & Courierqw/iwq:
THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP is a new magazine that promises well for the future, if we may judge by the third (September) number, which has just come to hand, and contains among its best things a curious article on "Omens and Second-Sight," several very good stories and an interesting letter from Paris. --Harlow E. Woodward, Harlow E. medicines, 40 Bromfield and 100 Tremont. house 1 Dunreath.- 26 December 1898, the American Druggist and Pharmaceutical Record reported the following:
Another Cutter Fails -- Ten Per Cent!
The latest failure in this city has set druggists commenting upon the seemingly unlimited credit granted to cutters in comparison to that given to those who endeavor to conduct their business upon safe and conservative lines. The speed with which a keeper is placed in the establishment of this last named class when they are unfortunate enough to fall behind in their payments, is being compared with the length of time allowed those conducting business with a splurge, and selling goods at either a loss, or at an unsafe margin for profit. The failure referred to above is that of Harlow E. Woodward, who has conducted a drug store under Horticultural Hall. The liabilities are placed at over $65.000; the assets at about 010,000. About $50,000 of this indebtedness is for stock, and it is rumored that two wholesale houses in this city are creditors to considerable amounts. Some New York dealers also lose heavily, as do manufacturers of patent medicines. The failure has been expected for some weeks past. A composition offer of 10 per cent is expected.20 - The website of the New York Chapter of the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society states that "among the New England collectors at the close of the 19th century...from Boston was druggist Harlow E. Woodward...who collected British North American and had a 12d Canada in his holding as well as a number of U.S. provisionals on cover and U.S. and Canadian imprint blocks.21
