Biography* | Joseph Richard Culpepper recorded his son's birth in the Family Bible: "Joseph W. E. Culpepper was born Feb the 11th 1863." Joseph W. Edward Culpepper's father enlisted in the Confederate Army in mid-1862 and was away fighting in the Civil War when Ed was born. It is not known if Ed was born in Randolph Co., AL where his parents were married or in Tallapoosa Co., AL where Ed was noted in the 1866 Alabama state census as a male under 10 years of age living with his parents. By 1870, Ed's parents had moved the family to Lee Co., AL where Ed was noted in 1870 and 1880 census records. Unfortunately, the 1890 census records were burned but at some point after the 1880 census, Ed's parents moved to Macon, Bibb Co., GA and this is where he apparently met and married Mary E. Holsey. Edward was noted with his wife, Mary E., and a daughter, Eva, whose month and year of birth were recorded as February 1891, in the 1900 census records of Macon, GA. At some point, Ed had apparently learned the carpentry trade since Mrs. F. D. Hale recorded entries from the Macon City Directory showing Ed working as a carpenter, a frame maker and a cabinet maker. By 1900, Edward had apparently purchased a home at 414 Clinton in Macon, GA and this is where he settled down with his family. Edward's mother had died in 1893 and his father was noted living with the family in the 1900 census. There is some question about whether Ed had a second wife since, according to Mrs. Hale's notes, his wife's name was listed variously as "Callie," "Nellie," and "Nettie" in the Macon City Directory from 1905 through 1935. The last record lists Edward as an employee of Builders Lumber Co. He would have been 72 years old.

Biography* | Americus Child Killed By Auto Americus, April 8. While walking on the sidewalk at the intersection of Lee and Furlow Streets this afternoon, Sarah Margarette Culpepper, aged 11, young daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Culpepper, was instantly killed, and her sister, Minnie Sue, aged 3, is in critical condition from injuries received when the car of Mrs. Burt Bowers, driven by her companion, Mrs. Jerry Mugivans, swerved into the sidewalk. Mrs. Mugivans was learning the mechanism of the car when coming down Lee Street, she attempted to turn into Furlow Street. By some manner she lost control of the car, running upon the sidewalk at the street intersection. The little girls who were with their mother attempted to run out of the way of the car, it is stated, but the older child was caught directly in the path, being thrown for several feet and before the machine could be stopped, the left front wheel had passed over her chest. Witnesses to the accident state that the younger child was caught by the running board of the machine, being thrown partially under the rear wheel, which passed over the right arm, crushing it in several places. Charles A. Culpepper, father of the children, an engineer on the Seaboard Air Line railway between here and Savannah, was on his return trip home. He was advised of the accident at Helena, where he was relieved. Certain parties who witnessed the accident stated that the car driven by Mrs. Mugivans was running between fifteen and twenty miles an hour. Mrs. Mugivans, at the Windsor Hotel, is prostrated with grief over the accident. ---------------- The second child in the awful auto accident of Sunday died Wednesday. --------------- According to A Chronology of Americus and Sumter County, Georgia 1915 - 1961, Alan Anderson, compiler, Mrs. Jerry Mugivan was the wife of John Robinson's Ten Big Shows Circus proprietor, wintering in Americus. After the deaths, they donated a memorial pipe organ to Lee Street Methodist Church.1

Minnie Sue Culpepper
F, (13 January 1914 - 10 April 1917)
Father | Charles T. S. Augustus Culpepper (7 Mar 1872 - 28 Mar 1940) |
Mother | Minnie Greene (12 Mar 1875 - 9 Nov 1964) |
Birth* | 13 January 1914 | Minnie was born at Americus, Sumter Co., Georgia, on 13 January 1914. |
Death* | 10 April 1917 | She died at Americus, Sumter Co., Georgia, on 10 April 1917 at age 3. |
Burial* | circa 12 April 1917 | Her body was interred circa 12 April 1917 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Americus, Sumter Co., Georgia. |
Biography* | The Bible record of her birth and death appear to read Minnie Sue but the name on her tombstone was Minnie Lee. According to Mrs. Robert J. Culpepper in a 19 Jan 1979 letter, Minnie's middle name was Sue and she and her sister Sara Margaret were "killed in an auto accident in Apr. 1917." |
