Family came to Texas in the ship "Herschel", one of fifty ships crossing the Atlantic to tak e German emigrants toTexas. The "Herschel" left Bremen on 15 Aug 1845 and landed at Galvesto n Texas on 22 Oct 1845.
Adequate means of transportation to carry the family inland were lacking at Indianola. The A rhelgers joined other immigrants and set out afoot for New Braunfels. Some carts and wagons d rawn by oxen, mules and horses were available to carry part of the burden. The journey wa s a perilous one; hunger, illness and fear of Indian attack were constant.
On 8 May 1846, the Arhelgers arrived at Fredericksburg with the first permanent settlers. Th e family's first home in Fredericksburg was a temporary shelter under a huge live oak tree o n present day East San Antionio Street. Soon a log cabin was built for more permanent shelter . Jacob Arhelger and his two oldest sons each recieved a town lot. The men busied themselve s building "traps" for livestock, clearing land and tilling it with wooden plows, planting ga rdens and fields, and building fences of rocks and rails. The women tended the gardens, cooke d, baked bread, sewed, churned butter, harvested vegetables, put up sauerkraut, plucked gees e and made feather beds.
The children often played along the banks of Baron's Creek with both white and Indian childre n. They cut firewood; gathered eggs, nuts, and berries; hunted for squirrel, raccoon, and opo ssum.
