Death of a Pioneer
Rogue River Courier December 1909
We have to announce the death of Mrs. Hiram Bunch which occurred at the family residence in this city Wednesday, December 1. She was so unforunate as to have a fall the week before by which she sustained a fracture of one of her hips. This injury resulted in her death at the age of 86 years, five months, and 11 days.
Grandma Bunch crossed the plains in Capt. Sam Mays,s Ox train in 1853 and located in the Rogue River Valley, were she lived all these years except a short time spent in California. She is the widow of Hiram Bunch, who died in California in 1866. She was the mother of eleven children, five of whom are living - Mrs. Clara Boise of Los Angeles - Mrs. Louise Powers of Seattle - Mrs. Bell Montgomery of Seattle - Frank Bunch of Coalinga - and William Bunch of Grants Pass.
She has lived in Josephine County since 1853. Mrs. Bunch was a native of Indiana and was of that class of women who have honored the name of Oregon Pioneers.
The many sincere friends of Grandma Bunch will mourn her loss as one who served Oregon long and well and was highly respected by all who knew her. Parents: Jessee ROSS and Mary G. BYRUM.

Elizabeth had six sons and four daughters. She went to Calif. with David in 1874 and returned about 1879 with him. Elizabeth out lived David by three years and died 23/April/1887,just North of Jenny Land,Arkansas.
Her Funeral cost $25.00,and Byrum BEATTY paid for it in Oct. of 1887. She is buried in Steep Hill Cemetery,not far from were they lived. Her grave is only marked with a "Field Stone" if it is marked at all. North of my Gr.grandmother,s grave is a stone marked E B and on the South side is a stone I make out as E BE???? (Could be BEATTY).
