His parents were 'Helena Michaelis and her husband, Reuben Hallenstein, who owned a shoddy-mill in Lügde which manufactured woollen cloth from refuse rags'. His brothers were Isaac and Bendix (1835-1905).2,1 He married Rebecca Hart on 22 June 1864 at Victoria, Australia; and their marriage was recorded in Victoria and announced in The Argus (Melbourne, Vic) three days later. He is desribed as 'late of Daylesford' and she is 'the eldest daughter of Mrs Isabella Hart, 4 Victoria-terrace, Barkley-street, St Kilda. No cards'.3,4,5
