Garnett Addison DAVIS [Parents] "Garnie" was born 4 Mar 1910 in Virginia. He died 3 Jan 1991 in Virginia. Garnie married Anna Gail ELKINS.

Anna Gail ELKINS was born 7 Sep 1915 in Virginia. She died 24 Mar 2004 in Winter Haven, FL and was buried in Glade Creek Cemebery, Blue Ridge, VA. Anna married Garnett Addison DAVIS.

Anna had a sister, Ruth Elkins, who was a nurse and never married.  Ruth died in 2005 or 2006.  She also had a brother, Luther, who lived in the Swords Creek area of Russell County.  Anna moved to Florida in about 1997, spending the last 7 years of her life there.  She had Alzheimer's Disease.

Anna Elkins Davis, 88, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at Winter Haven, Florida. She was born September 7, 1915, a daughter of the late Jerome and Nora Compton Elkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garnet Addison Davis; son, Coy B. Davis; and sister, Ethel Keene. She is survived by three daughters Coline Gibson of Winter Haven, Fla., Judy Reed of Cloverdale, Va. and Joan Thomas of Blue Ridge, Va.; eleven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ruth Elkins of Swords Creek, W. Va. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, March 27, 2004 at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, Va. Interment will follow in Glade Creek Cemetery in Blue Ridge. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of service at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home, 366-0707.

Rees Tate BOWEN [Parents] was born 1737 in Augusta Co., VA. He died 7 Oct 1780 in Kings Mountain, NC. Rees married Margaret Levisa SMITH on 1756 in Augusta Co., VA.

Rees/Reece Bowen was one of the first settlers of Tazewell Co., VA, locating at Maiden Springs about 1772, where he owned a large estate, which is still in the possession of his descendants, having been owned by a Reece Bowen for six generations.

To protect their family from attacks by Indians, Mr. Bowen built a strong stockade around his house, but later a much larger and stronger fort was erected near by, which became the historical Maiden Spring Fort which was also to protect neighboring families.

He was in the Battle of Point Pleasant and went on the relief of the Kentucky stations in 1778. Rees/Reece was a lieutenant under his brother. Because his brother, William, was ill, Rees/Reece took command under Major William Edmunson and Colonel William Campbell. Rees was lieutenant of Colonel Campbell's regiment of riflemen of Virginia Militia when killed at the Battle of Kings Mountain.

Margaret Levisa SMITH was born Oct 1741. She died 16 Feb 1834 in Tazewell Co., VA. Margaret married Rees Tate BOWEN on 1756 in Augusta Co., VA.

Levisa Bowen was a woman of great courage and bravery. She saved the lives of all the women and children at the fort, while their men went out to fight the Indians. She was small in stature, but strong in courage. She accepted the responsibility of raising her orphaned children, none of whom were of age when her husband died.
