John Gordon is recorded as being a Carpenter on his daughter Mary's marriage certificate of 5 February 1857.

He is described in other documents, at various times, as Labourer, Weighmaster and Cartwright.

Death Details: 5.30 pm, 8 Apr 1860, Garve, Contin. 397 John died at 5.30pm on the 8th April 1860, aged 67 years. There was no medical attendant, and the cause of death was given as Old Age. He was buried in the Garve burial ground, the informant was Roderick Gordon, his sixteen-year-old son.


John married Janet (Jessie) McKENZIE, daughter of John McKENZIE and Janet McKENZIE, on 30 Nov 1832 in Contin, Garve, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.397 (Janet (Jessie) McKENZIE was born on 6 Apr 1807 in Urquhart and Logie Wester, Ross and Cromarty 397,472 and died on 17 Mar 1887 in Garve, Contin 397.)


John and Jessie's marriage is also recorded at Urquhart and Logie Wester on the 1st December 1832, by the Reverend Jo Macdonald of that church, who performed the ceremony at Contin.

The church at Urquhart and Logie Wester, in those days, was the centre of a large farming area, and was surrounded by a large churchyard cemetery. Today the church is a ruin, though many of the headstones are still standing, while adjacent is the lone building of Urquhart Farm.
