Geo. F. Higgins & Co.'s sporting goods house, 1508 Arapahoe street,
has been established since 1878. The partners in the house, Geo. F.
Higgins and Frank H. Wright, have a thorough knowledge of the trade
they are in, and of the requirements of the country they sell in.
They take an active interest in sporting affairs; have been
successful in business; are property owners; and are identified by
their concerns, as well as by feelings of attachment with the true
interests of the community.
As the leading house, of the kind, here, they carry a stock valued
at $10,000, which is the largest and best assorted west of Chicago.
They do both a large retail and wholesale trade in Colorado, New
Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, and neighboring States, and keep salesmen on
the road in those districts. They handle the Columbia, Victor, and
other standard makes of bicycles; and the leading makes of rifles,
shot guns, pistols, and ammunition. They are western agents for the
well known firm of A. G. Spalding & Bros, of New York and Chicago;
sell athletic outfits, and base ball goods, lawn tennis and cricket
supplies, gymnasium suits and apparatus, cutlery, playing cards, and
games of every description; and carry a large variety of toys,
wagons, velocipedes, etc., for holiday trade.

INQUIRY
My great grandmother was Catherine Higgins born in Dungarvan,
Waterford Ireland c 1870. I believe that her mother died when she
was an infant and she was reared by her grandmother. Her fathers
name was Michael and there is some discrepancy over him as on
her wedding cert it says he was a farmer and the birth cert that I
think is hers says he was a shoemaker.
Looking at the birth cert from Sept 1870 that I believe to be my
great grandmothers, her father was Michael Higgins,
Shoemaker, Dungarvan.
Her mother was Catherine Higgins formerly Dwyer.
(Known as Kate)
Her brother Patrick was born 13 March 1865, Place of birth,
Main Street, Dungarvan. Parents and occupation the same.
From
www.waterfordcountylibrary.ie/en/ death register I
found the following.
Hanora Higgins died 29 Oct 1869 aged 4 months, shoemakers
daughter. Hanora Dwyer present at death.
Kate Higgins died 05 Nov 1869 aged 1 and one quarter,
shoemakers daughter. Hanora Dwyer present at death.
Kate Higgins died 12 Aug 1874 aged 30, shoemakers wife.
Hanora Dwyer present at death.
Hanora Dwyer may be a sister of Kate or her mother.
Catherine married Charles Griffith in Donegal in 1901 and the
story goes that it was match made by her brother and that he
accompanied her from the US to Donegal.
What I know for definite is that she had a brother Patrick
Higgins who we think married a Sweeney girl from Donegal. They
met in the USA and we also know that they lived in Colorado. Hey may
have lived elsewhere first. I have pieced together a family there
from 1900 – 1930 census that I believe to be them.
Children include Cornelius, Catherine, Lilian,
Daniel. I have dates of deaths and burial locations for
Patrick J and Ellenora Higgins,
if they are the family
I am looking for.

KITTIE WALDO HIGGINS, M. D.
Early on Sunday morning, December 4, 1904, Kittie Waldo Higgins,
M. D., passed from this world into the world beyond. For nearly
seven weeks was she confined to her bed before the angel of death
could conquer her undaunted spirit. She was born in Watertown, New
York, in 1859. For ten years she was an honored resident of Denver.
Her early medical education was received at the Denver Homeopathic
College, but owing to the personal animosities of one of the
faculty, she left at the close of her junior year, and after a year
spent at the Denver University, a year which made her a stronger
homeopath than ever, she went to Dunham, where she graduated with
the class of 1901. She was a member of the Colorado Homeopathic
Society. Her absence is mourned by her aged mother, resident in
Watertown, and by her husband, Frank W. Higgins, and one son,
Berton F. At the time of her demise her son was in the A. Van
der Naillen School of Engraving in San Francisco completing the
course of civil engineering. Though near graduation with honors, yet
as soon as his mother's condition turned for the worst he started
for home, reaching here the morning of the 5th. Funeral services
were held by Rev. David Utter, at Rogers' Chapel, on the 7th, after
which the body was removed to Riverside and cremated.

History of Colorado By Wilbur Fiske Stone
Published 1918
HON. ROBERT H. HIGGINS.
Hon. Robert H Higgins, state treasurer of Colorado and for many
years one of the builders of Pueblo, is a direct descendant of that
Robert Higgins who, after many voyages as captain, finally settled
down on Manhattan island in 1755 and married Miss Van Zandt, the
daughter of the owner of the good ship he had commanded. Robert H.
Higgins has in his possession the evidence of direct descent from
this hero of pre- Revolutionary days. This is the parchment,
yellowed with age and given in turn from father to eldest son, by
which the Frederick county (Va.) home of the Higgins family was
deeded in 1762 to Robert Higgins by Thomas Lord Fairfax. But there
is much more of value in that huge box which Treasurer Higgins now
keeps in a fireproof vault. There is the original military warrant
granted to Captain Robert Higgins of Revolutionary
fame, "four thousand acres, revolutionary land grant, between the
Little Miami and the Scioto rivers" in Ohio. This is signed by
President James Monroe and dated 1817. John Joliff Higgins,
grandfather of State Treasurer Higgins, was a native of Ohio and
served his county as sheriff for several terms, between the years
1830 and 1840. In 1842 he was elected a major-general of volunteers
by the state legislature and was also a presidential elector on the
Martin Van Buren ticket in 1844. Robert H. Higgins was born at
Georgetown, Brown county, Ohio, on April 29, 1862. His father was
Robert Hetrick Higgins, who was a native of Ohio
and passed away at his home in Georgetown, that state. During the
period of the Civil war he served for three years and seven months
as captain of Company D of the Fifty-ninth Ohio Volunteer Infantry.
He took a prominent part in the affairs of his county, commonwealth
and country, serving as county clerk for fifteen years before and
after the Civil war and one term as a member of the lower house of
the state legislature, while later he became assistant adjutant
general of Ohio. The mother of Robert H. Higgins of this review was
Matilda Battaile Marshall Buckner Higgins. In these names her
ancestry is fairly well outlined, for she was a descendant of the
Battaile, the Marshall and the Buckner families of Revolutionary
days. In 1891 Robert H. Higgins, who had spent six years with
the Santa Fe Railroad system in Kansas, came to Colorado to go into
the smelting business. He was again with the Santa Fe from 1896
until 1900, and from 1900 until 1907 was active for a second time in
the smelting business. From 1908 until 1916, or for a period of
eight years, he was county commissioner of Pueblo county. This
represents the period in which the greatest progress was made in the
history of both the city and county. The new seven hundred thousand
dollar courthouse was built in that time without a bond issue and is
all paid for. In 1909 began the era of road building and Pueblo
county today has the finest system of hard-surfaced roads in the
state. It has, moreover, more miles of road than any other county of
the state. In 1916 Mr. Higgins was nominated for state treasurer by
the democrats of Colorado and was elected to the office by a large
majority, a position which he has filled with honor to himself and
credit to the commonwealth. On the 4th of February, 1892. Mr.
Higgins was married to Miss Laura Alwilda Prescott.
Their living children are Ruth, Robert and Nellie. Robert is now
with the Twenty-eighth Engineers in France. He enlisted at Camp
Meade, Maryland, within a hundred miles of where his ancestor, the
original Robert, enlisted for service in the Revolutionary war. Mr.
Higgins belongs to the Masonic lodge, being a thirty-second degree
Mason, and is also a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of
Elks and the Woodmen of the World. His political, like his business
career has been marked by steady progress and his ability is
attested by the demand of his fellow citizens for his service in
office.

PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD
HON. JOHN F. VIVIAN, deputy superintendent of insurance for the state of Colorado, is among the most
prominent citizens of Golden, where he has made his home since 1879. He was born in Phoenix, Houghton
County, Mich., December 9, 1864, the son of Joseph and Mary (Tresidder) Vivian, natives of England. His
father, who came to the United States in youth, was one of the pioneer miners of copper and iron ore in
the northern peninsula of Michigan, where he died in 1867. His wife, who accompanied her parents from
England at an early age, settled with them in the northern part of Michigan, where her father was a man
of considerable prominence and influence. The year after her husband's death she came to Colorado, where
she afterward married Robert Bunney, and now resides in the vicinity of Golden. She has a son and daughter,
the latter being Ida, wife of Theodore Merkle, of
Golden.
When a boy Mr. Vivian worked upon a farm, but upon reaching his majority he entered the mercantile
business. He has always been interested in politics and has taken an active part in public affairs. In
recognition of his services in behalf of the Republican party, he was in 1890 tendered the office
of postmaster. In 1893 he was elected clerk and recorder of Jefferson County, defeating a man who had
held the office of county clerk for twenty-one years. Two years later he was re-elected, this time by a
majority of eleven hundred out of a total of three thousand votes cast in the county, it being the
largest majority ever given any candidate in the county. He held the office until February 14, 1897,
when Auditor Lowell appointed him deputy superintendent of insurance for the state. In 1897 he
attended the national convention of insurance commissioners held at Old Point Comfort, Va., and in
September, 1898, expects to attend the convention at Milwaukee. In his present position he is said to be
just in his rulings, accurate in his decisions and faithful in the discharge of every duty. His official
reports are models of accuracy, system and correctness. To his work he brings a conscientious
desire to do what is best and wisest, in view of the circumstances.
In 1896 Mr. Vivian was elected a delegate from the first congressional district to the national
convention of the Republican party. He took an active part in the exciting scenes of that famous meeting,
doing all within his power to secure recognition of the cause of silver by the convention. In this effort
he united, under the leadership of Senator Teller, with A. M. Stevenson, C. H. Brickenstein, of Conejos
County, J. M. Downing, of Pitkin County, Dr. J. W. Rockefellow, of Crested Butte, F. C. Goudy, of Denver,
and Judge Hart, of Pueblo, all of whom left the convention hall when monometallism was championed by
the party. Fraternally he is connected with Golden Lodge No. 10, K. of P., in which he is past
chancellor. He was united in marriage, in Golden, with Miss Addie E. Higgins (see census
below), who was born in this city, the daughter of John A. and Emily
Higgins, early settlers of Jefferson County from Hendricks County, Ind. They have two sons, John C. and
Chauncey.
