HON. WILLIAM E. HIGGINS, (William Edward Higgins) a prominent corporation lawyer and counselor of LaPorte, Indiana, is connected with one of the oldest families in America. The ancestry originated in Wales, and two brothers went there from England, and thence, in 1623, came to America and landed in New Foundland, where one brother remained, but the other came to Connecticut, and was the first of a long line of descendants who have worthily filled their parts since that time. During the Revolution Cornelius Higgins, great-grandfather of William E. Higgins, held a commission as a captain in the continental army, and did his full share toward winning independence. His son David was born at Haddam, Connecticut, August 6, 1761, and he, too, had a share in the Revolution, for, in July, 1779, when the British came to New Haven, he was called out for local defense. He was a student in Dartmouth College for two years, and graduated from Yale in 1785. He became a
minister, with his home in various places: in 1801 he moved to Aurelius (now Auburn) New York, and in 1813 to Bath, Steuben county, New York, where he was pastor of the Presbyterian church until 1831. The wife of Rev. David Higgins was Eunice Gilbert, a direct descendant of Matthew Gilbert, who, as a resident of England, had much to do with the organization of the Massachusetts colony, and, on coming to this country, was elected deputy governor of the colony in 1671. He was one of the pillars of the church, and a stanch Puritan.

James G. Higgins, the son of David and Eunice (Gilbert) Higgins, was born in the state of Connecticut, February 22, 1791. He removed with his father to Steuben county. New York, and lived in Bath until 1835, when he set out for the west. Before he settled permanently he was in LaPorte, Indiana, for four weeks, and while there helped build the first court house in the county, his brother having a contract on the structure. From LaPorte he went to Chicago, thence to Ottawa, Illinois, where he had the distinction of being the first merchant in the town. He died at Ottawa in 1840. His wife was Mariah Burns, a native of Onondaga county, New York.

Hon. William E. Higgins was the son of the last named parents, born at Ottawa, Illinois, in' 1838. In November, 1840, after his father's death, his mother, who was of Irish ancestry and had been a school teacher for several years in Bath, New York, before her marriage, left Ottawa with her three children and came to LaPorte. Much of the education which Mr. Higgins received was at the hands of his intelligent mother, and when he arrived at young manhood he began teaching school, which he continued for four winters, studying law whenever opportunity offered, at night or in the vacations. In 1859 he entered the office of Hon. Morgan H. Weir, and in April, 1860, was one of a class of five to be admitted to practice, the examination being conducted by a committee consisting of the late Judge Bradley, Daniel Noyes and Don J. Woodward.

Since that time Mr. Higgins has been prominently engaged in practice of his profession. During the subsequent years he built up a large general practice, but more recently has narrowed the scope of his work to counselling and advising, and to his duties as corporation lawyer, he being attorney for several large companies, and leaving the department of court and jury practice to others. For twenty-five years he has been attorney for the Rumely Manufacturing Company of this city.

Mr. Higgins has also an honorable record in public life. As the Republican party candidate he was elected city attorney in 1866, his opponent being Judge Bradley, and he has held the same office several different times. At two different times he was deputy prosecuting attorney for the LaPorte circuit. He is also foremost in Odd Fellow circles. He has been through all the chairs of the local lodge and encampment and the grand lodge: for twenty years was one of the trustees and business manager for the local lodge, and had much to do with building it up to its present flourishing condition; he was one of the trustees when the Odd Fellows building was erected.

Mr. Higgins was married at LaPorte. in September, 1863, to Miss Harriet J. Place, daughter of Nelson T. Place, a prominent old-time resident of this county. One daughter has been born of this union, Fannie B., now the wife of Abram Somerfield, of LaPorte. In professional, fraternal and social circles Mr. Higgins has risen to a place with the leaders, and his career is one that justifies praise from every point of view.

Maurice Higgins Jr., 84, of Linton, passed away at 4:39PM Friday June 18, 2010 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.
He was born in Terre Haute, April 23, 1926 the son of Maurice Higgins Sr. and Lida Conway Higgins.

Maurice was a WWII Army Veteran, and retired from Hexcel Ski Manufacturer in California.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cuba Jeane Bowman Higgins in 1999, one daughter, Carolyn Burnett, two brothers, Bob Higgins and Billy Higgins, and two sisters, Helen Altvater, and Virginia Higgins.

Survivors include: three sons, Maurice Higgins III (Sara) of Sullivan, Steve Higgins (Donna) of Worthington, Kyle Higgins of Albuquerque, NM., three daughters, Verna Wilder of Louisville, Colo., Pam Kruse (Lyndon) of Salida, CA., Nan Hawkins (Andy) of Grass Valley, CA., two brothers, Max Higgins of Tracy, Ca., and Harry Higgins of Walnut Creek, CA., one sister, Hazel Schalburg, of Terre Haute, 18 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.

There will be no visitation. Cremation is scheduled. Arrangements were entrusted to Banks and Brust Funeral Home in Sullivan.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Albert W. Higgins, the new general manager of the Merchants' Heat & Light Company of Indianapolis, Ind., is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's course in chemical engineering, class of 1901, and had his first engineering experience in the chemical industry. In 1904, however, he entered the engineering and contracting business, building power plants, electric railways, water works, underground conduit systems, etc. From 1910 until 1913 Mr. Higgins acted as fuel engineer for several large Eastern and Western coal-mining companies, and in the year last mentioned became associated with the Kelsey-Brewer interests in the operation of the La Cross (Wis.) property as superintendent, subsequently being appointed general manager. After completing the rehabilitation of this property, Mr. Higgins was transferred to the Merchants' Heat & Light Company as general manager in charge of construction and operation.

SOUTH BEND - Patrick J. Higgins, 91, passed away at 6:10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13th, in Miller's Merry Manor, New Carlisle. Patrick was born in Chicago, to the late James H. and Bridget (Doherty) Higgins. On May 29, 1943, he married Catherine (Mangan) Higgins, who preceded him in death in November 1999. He is survived by his children, Sharon (Michael) Saltsman of Houston, TX, Patrick (Lucette) Higgins of South Bend, Ronald P. (Rebecca) Higgins of South Bend and Dennis M. (Brooke) Higgins of Western Springs, IL; nine grandchildren, Sarah Weinkauff, Ellen (Luke) Reilander, Claire Higgins, Mary (James) Govin, Eileen Higgins, Joseph Higgins, Patrick Higgins, James Higgins and Anna Higgins; and by his great-granddaughter, Catherine Govin. Pat honorably served his country in the Army Air Corps during WW II. He loved his family, enjoyed spending time at home and farming. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 16th, in St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, where a Rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 16th, in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will be at a later date at St. John Kanty Cemetery, Rolling Prairie. Memorial contributions may be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. Willard D. Higgins

Mr. Willard D. Higgins, 83, of Warsaw (Indiana), passed away Sunday at 7:15 a.m. in Kosciusko Community Hospital.

Willard was born the son of Orville and Hazel Anglin Higgins on Oct. 28, 1926, at Etna Green.

He was a resident of the Etna Green, Rochester and Warsaw areas all his life. He was a graduate of Etna Green High School, Class of 1944. He owned and operated John Deere dealerships in both Rochester and Warsaw. He was a member of the Cruisin' Hoosiers, the John Deere 2-Cylinder Club and the Corvette Club. He enjoyed classic automobiles, antique tractors, car racing and water sports.

Willard married Betty Stackhouse on March 26, 1950. She survives along with his four children, Patrick and wife Kristi Higgins, Warsaw; Paula and husband Bob Blyth, Rolling Meadows, Ill.; Meri and husband Fred Jessup, Goshen; and Melana and husband Dave Smith, Rochester. He was also blessed with eleven grandchildren, Heather Shank, Chase Higgins, Kaila Higgins, Brian Blyth, Logan Blyth, Lee Hartman, Carly Hartman, Linnea Smith, Lindsay Smith Straeter, Luke Smith and Landon Smith, along with four great-grandchildren, Branson, Austin and Hudson Schlemmer, and Ellie Straeter.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and one grandson.

A celebration of Willard's life will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Calvary Baptist Church of Oswego, where he and Betty attended, with Pastors Udel Meyers and Rick Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today in the Deaton-Clemens Funeral Home, Bourbon, and for one hour before services in the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery at Warsaw.

The family would prefer memorial contributions in his memory, rather than flowers, to Word of Life Fellowship, P.O. Box 600, Schroon Lake, NY 12870, attention Ryan Williamson.

SMITH HIGGINS.

One of the families which came from Kentucky in the early settlement of this state, to find a home where slavery was not recognized, was that represented by the subject of this memoir. The grandfather of subject was a prominent slave holder of the Blue Grass state, and there the father of subject was partly reared. When he was a boy his father gave up slavery and came into the woods of Indiana to find a free home, in order that his growing children should not be raised under the blighting effects of that southern institution, slavery. They entered land where subject now resides, a tract of one hundred and twenty acres, which was partially covered with dense timber. In all this vicinity at that time there were splendid tracts awaiting the farmer at the usual government price and the settlers soon afterward came in very fast. The family came through in wagons, sought their land, camped in the wagon and under the trees while a rude log house was built, and began to clear off the heavy growth that covered the land as with a huge blanket. The father cleared off in his lifetime about fifty acres. He had few opportunities for securing an education, but managed to secure a fair schooling at the old log subscription schools. He was an intelligent and thrifty husbandman and took much pride in his farm and in his stock. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and an active worker in church circles and was a liberal supporter of all worthy enterprises and movements.

The subject of this sketch, Smith Higgins, is the son of Joseph G. and Sarah B. (Smith) Higgins, and was born in Seward township, this county, January 7. 1855. He is one of four children born to his parents, as follows : Smith,- subject: Thomas, who wedded and lives in Seward township; Myrtle, deceased; Mercy, who died when a young girl. The subject of this memoir was reared on his father's place and was given a good education in the common branches and passed the examination and was given a certificate to teach school in this county. He finished his education in the Indiana Normal School at Valparaiso, attending that excellent institution for one year. He then began to teach and taught in all nine months, giving excellent satisfaction, as his methods were excellent and modern. In early manhood he was joined in marriage' with Miss Henrietta E. McMillen. who was a native of Lima, Ohio, her father being a resident of Valparaiso. Indiana, where the young
couple met and when the subject was attending school there. Their marriage was celebrated February 20, 1879, and to them three children have been born, as follows: Lyman G.. born March 3, 1880, at home with his parents: Fred, born in 1882, lives at home; Thomas R.. born August 9. 1885, lives at home. Upon his marriage Mr. Higgins moved upon the farm of his father, and has followed farming ever since, upon the death of his father, in 1879, taking charge of the old place. His mother died when he was a small boy. Mr. Higgins is a Republican and is much interested in his party's success, though he does not himself take an active part in politics. He and his wife are members of the Church of God, and he is one of the elders and trustees of that church. He makes a specialty of small fruit growing, and raises immense quantities of strawberries, blackberries, etc. He sells to commission houses, and his products go to all portions of the United States. He is thoroughly posted in the growing of the small fruits, is well known and highly respected. Mr. Higgins has in his possession an old parchment deed executed under the administration of President Martin Van Buren. and which is a valuable relic in the Higgins home.

Miss Lizzie Higgins, born in Logansport in 1853, died, 1902, and her sister, Miss Ella Higgins, born, 1851, and died, 1907, daughters of Capt. A. M. Higgins, were ardent lovers of literature and wrote short stories for eastern magazines and were the authors of "The Court of King Christian," a local play.

Alvin Rayburn Higgins, son of Alvin Higgins of Noble township, now a teacher in the Louisville, Kentucky, high school, wrote the class poem for the Logansport high school class, 1906, which received merited praise at the time. Since then he has written a few other poems and contributed a number of articles to eastern magazines.

Warren P. Higgins, also a son of Alvin Higgins, a Noble township farmer, where he was born 1874, and graduated from the Logansport high school 1895, should be congratulated on remaining on the farm and study nature in its truest sense, from its fountain source. He is a contributor to the Birds and Nature Magazine, and the world would be better if more of our college boys would remain on the farm as Mr. Higgins has done. Cass county should feel proud of such men, and encourage farmer boys to become thoroughly educated but remain in the country, put brains into farming, breathe pure air and commune with nature and nature's God.

Rev. Wm. R. Higgins, born in Logansport, 1838, died at Terre Haute, Indiana, 1895, and lies at rest in Mount Hope cemetery, was educated in the Logansport schools, Wabash College and Lane Theological Seminary. Reverend Higgins is the author of many short stories of a religious character, published in magazines and church papers. He published a book entitled "Cardinal Points," a religious work especially for ministers.

Cecilius R. Higgins, postmaster at Fort Wayne, late chief clerk of the western division of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago railway company, is a native of Ohio, born at Kalida, Putnam county, January 21, 1847. Afterward his parents removed to Delphos, Ohio, where he was raised to manhood, and educated in the public schools, and where he began his career as a railroad man. His first employment was as a messenger boy, and while serving in this capacity he learned telegraphy, and was given a position as an operator. About the year 1867 he was appointed ticket and freight agent of the Pittsburgh & Fort Wayne road at Delphos and Ada. January 1, 1868, he was called to Fort Wayne to accept the important position of train dispatcher of the western division, which he filled during nine years. He then acted two years in the capacity of wood and tie agent for the company, and in 1879 was appointed chief clerk, and this responsible position he held until the summer of 1889. Those admirable qualities of character which have made him so successful in railroad life have also made him popular with his fellow-citizens in all social relations. Having always taken an active interest in politics, he was, in 1886, tendered the republican nomination for auditor, a trust which he accepted. He made a gallant contest for the success of the ticket, but was unable entirely to overcome the tremendous adverse majority in the county, although he ran 2,700 votes ahead of his ticket. During the exciting campaign of 1888, Mr. Higgins served as treasurer of the Allen county republican central committee, and as a director of the Morton club, and rendered efficient service to the republican national ticket. In recognition of his services, and that executive ability he has manifested in other positions, he was appointed by President Harrison, June 18, 1889, postmaster at Fort Wayne, which position he assumed July 9, 1889. Mr. Higgins was married May 6, 1874, to Ella S. Hale, of West Virginia, a niece of O. W. Jefferds, with whom she was raised, and they have two children: Celia and Adah. Mrs. Higgins is a member of the First Presbyterian church.

THE LATE CECILIUS R. HIGGINS 

 CECILIUS  HIGGINS - DECEASED. for the past five years president and   principal owner of the Higgins Artificial Ice Co., Fort Wayne, Ind., and one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of that city, died July l7th at St. Joseph's hospital of Bright's disease of the kidneys.

Mr. Higgins was born at Kalida, Ohio, January 21. 1847, but was raised to manhood and educated at Delphos, Ohio, to where his parents removed. He began his business career as a railroad man and in 1868 came to Fort Wayne, Ind., as train dispatcher for the Pittsburg & Fort Wayne Railway Co. In 1879 he was appointed chief clerk of the transportation department, a position which he held till 1889. In that year he was appointed postmaster of Fort Wayne, a post he held for four years. Soon after this he engaged in business and about 1899 became manager of the Fort Wayne Artificial Ice Co. For the past two years he has been the principal owner of the plant, as well as president and manager of the company.

Personally Mr. Higgins was held in the highest regard. It is said of him that he was one of the most lovable men in the city, honest, honorable, high minded, liberal, jovial in manner, a friend to every one he knew, and every one knew "Ceil" Higgins. He is survived by a widow and two daughters. The ice factory will be continued in operation under the management of Mr. A. B. White, a son-in-law of Mr. Higgins.

- John Higgins -
One of the oldest and most honored citizens of Kentland is John Higgins. He is probably one of the youngest survivors who saw actual service in the great War of the Rebellion. He was hardly in his teens when he became a drummer boy. For fully half a century he has been a hard working industrious mechanic and business man, and is still prosecuting his work vigorously at the head of an insurance, law and abstract office.

As a boy and young man he came into close touch with the hard circumstances of life. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, April 24, 1849, a son of Michael and Julia Higgins, of Irish descent. At the age of seven he was left an orphan, and for three years lived in the institution of the Children's Aid Society at New York City. In December, 1859, he came west with a carload of other children, and was adopted by Samuel Bramble of Tippecanoe County. With that man, for whose memory he has always had a high esteem, he made his home almost continuously until 1865. In the meantime he gained some education and served an apprenticeship at the tinner's trade under George W. Smith.

On October 10, 1861, Mr. Higgins enlisted as a drummer boy in Company B of the Fifty-first Indiana Regiment of Infantry. A child among men, he served with faithfulness and with the courage of a man until March 22, 1863. Just about half a century ago he moved to Kentland and took up the work of his trade as tinner, which he followed actively until 1888. Mr. Higgins is one of the few men whose recollections cover almost the entire period of Kentland's history. When he first came here there was one business block, a hotel and five or six stores, with a very few residences on the townsite proper. His own business affairs have prospered and he has lent a helping hand to all movements for improvement and has served many individuals with kindness and a spirit of brotherly helpfulness.

In 1888 Mr. Higgins was elected county recorder, and filled that office four years, at the end of which time he was re-elected for another like term, this time without opposition. He then went into partnership with Frank A. Comparet, in the law, insurance and abstract business. Their association was continued from January, 1897, until Mr. Comparet's death in 1905. Since then for the past ten years Mr. Higgins has continued alone in business. This is his chief occupation and interest, and he has made his office an important service in the county.

In politics he is a republican, and besides his work as county recorder he served as member of the town board three different times. In 1907, he was appointed county attorney for Newton County, Indiana, serving in that capacity for seven years. He is affiliated with the Lodge and Chapter of Masonry in Kentland and with the Council at Monticello. His family are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

On September 4, 1878, Mr. Higgins married Annie Wittenberg, who was born and reared in White County, Indiana, a daughter of Charles and Caroline Wittenberg. Mrs. Wittenberg is yet living in White County, but the father is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins are the parents of three children: Frederick B., Harry L. and Ruth B. Frederick, who died April 20, 1916, was a resident of Los Angeles, California, where he was engaged in the railroad business. He was a graduate of the Kentland High School. Harry L., also educated in the Kentland High School, is private secretary to the general manager of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company at Pittsburg. The daughter Ruth is a high school graduate, and also pursued a literary and musical course at De Pauw University.

Frank P. Higgins, one of the oldest passenger engineers in the service of the P., Ft. W. & C. railroad, was born in Ireland, January 14,1837. He is the eldest son of John Higgins, who removed with his family to America about 1845, and settled in Massachusetts. Frank P. was left with his grand-parents in Ireland, and did not come to America until 1850. His first work was on a farm in Massachusetts, where he put in three years, and then learned the trade of a shoemaker. Upon coming to Fort Wayne, in the winter of 1860, Mr. Higgins entered the service of the P., Ft. W. & C. railroad, as a fireman on freight and passenger engines. Two years later he entered the machine shops and worked about one year, and was then given an engine in the summer of 1864. He ran a freight engine about six years, and in 1870 he was promoted to passenger engineer. The period of Mr. Higgins' service with the Pennsylvania company is twenty-nine years, about nineteen of which has been as a passenger engineer. In 1881 he was assigned the engine drawing the limited express between Fort Wayne and Chicago. Mr. Higgins was married at Webster, Mass., in 1861, to Margaret A. Carney, who was born in Ireland. To their union a son and daughter have been born. The family are members of the Catholic Cathedral. In 1880 Mr. Higgins erected a handsome two-story brick residence at No. 143 East Jefferson street, where he and family reside.

A serious illness of eight weeks caused the death of Samuel D. Higgins, 70, at the W. S. Major Hospital at 12:20 p.m. today. Mr. Higgins resided at 107 E Taylor St. He was a lifelong resident of Shelbyville and for many years was employed as an interior decorator. For the past several years he had operated the Higgins Liquor Store on E. Broadway.
He was the son of Andrew J. and Frances (Shadley) Higgins and was born in this city on December 22, 1873. On May 16, 1902, he was married to Zona McCarty who survives with a daughter, Mrs. Bonetti Ferleman. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Mrs. Patti Degner and Fay and Kay Ferleman. Funeral services will be held at the Ewing Mortuary Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be at Forest Hill cemetery.

The Rev. J. Martin Higgins, well known aged minister, died at his late home in Middletown at one-fifteen o’clock this morning, from a complication of diseases from which he had been suffering for three months. He was aged seventy-two years. The funeral services will be held at the home at ten o’clock Saturday morning and at Flat Rock M.E. church at twelve-forty-five o’clock, the Rev. An Old Respected Citizen Passed Away Saturday Afternoon ----------
Andrew J. Higgins, one of the pioneers of Shelbyville, died at his late home, No. 35 east Taylor street, Saturday, July 30th, at 4:45 p.m. Mr. Higgins' death was due to uraemia, which in his weakened condition the two operations which were recently performed on him for gangrene, the result of erysipelas on one of his toes, soon overcame him. Andrew J. Higgins was born near Brooklyn, Franklin county, Indiana, December 28th, 1830. His father, Henry Higgins, of Irish descent, was born in Kentucky, came to Shelby county in 1835, and died in this city in 1872. Malinda (Jackson) Higgins, the mother of our subject, was born in Ohio, January 1st, 1813 and died here a few years ago. Andrew J. was the eldest of eight children. He received a common school education sufficient to enable him to teach school which he began at the age of seventeen years and followed at intervals which marked success for a period of nine years. In 1847, he embarked in the jewelry business, which he carried on with financial profit until 1877, when he retired and entered the business arena as real estate dealer, and being a man of excellent judgement has made some very profitable investments. Since retiring from the jewelry business in 1877 he also served as justice of the peace for more than twenty years, during which time he united in marriage more than six hundred couples. In 1852 he was united in marriage to Frances Shadley, unto whom were born eleven children: Mary J. Bailey (deceased), Elizabeth A. Bassett, Jas. B. Higgins (deceased), William Higgins (deceased), Margaret E. Walker, Frances Marshall, Martha E. Brown, George F. Higgins, Ursula Robertson, Charles A. Higgins (deceased), and Samuel A. Higgins. Shortly after marriage Mr. and Mrs. Higgins united with Ripple M. E. Church, and in later years removed their membership to the First M. E. Church of this city. He was a member of the Young Men's Prayer Band, seldom missing a meeting. Mr. Higgins was a genial, whole souled old gentleman, strictly fair in all his business dealings and was always ready with a helping hand for those who were in distress. His beaming countenance will be greatly missed by those who daily came into contact with them. His loss is like the loss of an old land mark to Shelbyville and Shelby County. The services will be held at the family residence, No. 35 east Taylor street, Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, the Rev. L. F. Dimmitte of the First M. E. Church, officiating. Mrs. Martin [Esta (Warner) Higgins died at
her home in Flat Rock last Thursday age forty-two
years. The funeral services wee held at the M.E.
Church in flat Rock, at one o’clock Friday afternoon,
Rev. L. N. Jones officiating. The remains were then
taken to St. George’s Lutheran Church, four miles west
of Flat Rock, where funeral services will be held by
Rev. C. A. Kuhn after which the remains will be
interred in St. George’s cemetery.

Estie Higgins, was born in Shelby county, Indiana, May 8, 1844, and died February 18, 1886. She leaves a husband and five children to mourn her loss and three children who have preceded her to the spirit world. Her remains were interred in St. George’s cemetery after a very touching funeral sermon by Rev. Kuhn. She united with the M.E. Church when quite young, and lived a consistent member of the same until her death, which was a very triumphant one. This only reminds us that the destiny of man is dissolution and the history of material organization is decay. To know our end is the lesson of life, for life in its entire analysis, is but a lesson; its preface the cradle, its finale the grave. The great voice that John heard out of heaven, saying, "There shall be no more death," was not the language of earth, but the unmistakable vernacular of that celestial land above. "Earth to earth, dust to dust, ashes to ashes," is the idiom of earth voiced by the shroud, the coffin, the grave. To that voice we have been listening as it comes to us so often of late. Her death has caused a blank in the church, the Sabbath School and social circle that cannot be filled. Her vacant pew and chair should be kept sacred to her memory. It mattered not whether in the kitchen, or parlor, she only had one object in view and that was duty in its broadest sense. It was her only aim in life to do right and make all happy around her. So warm in friendship that her friends were many. Although sensitive in nature, yet she was most appreciated by those with whom she was best acquainted. When she passed away the earth was mantled in white, as if reaching down its white arms to receive her spirit above. He life was irreproachable for, Enoch-like, "she walked with God." Stricken down in the midst of life, her loss will be felt around the family altar as well as in the class-room. Although she has passed away yet she shall live again; shall live in precept and Christian example, in the many noble deeds, virtues and Christian graces which shall rise from her tomb and kiss the wings of the summer wind as it gently passes o’er her tomb. Peaceful be thy repose. You will live again when the heavenly Father shall wake you to the joys of eternal life. With great satisfaction I review her life, so pure, so gentle, so lovely while in health, so calm and triumphant in death. CARTER B. HIGGINS, M. D., is a native of Preble County, Ohio, born December 15, 1843, being the eldest of the family of Jesse and Ann M. (Rodebaugh) Higgins, natives respectively of Montgomery County, Ohio, and Albany, New York. The family is of English extraction. The father of our subject came to Miami County in 1846 and settled in Peru. He first took charge of the Peru Mills and subsequently dealt in real estate. From 1858 to to 1860, he was Deputy Treasurer of Miami County. Later he was Mayor of Peru. He was a prominent man and held many positions of trust with credit to himself. His death took place January 17, 1879, having been born in 1806. His marriage was solemnized December 27, 1841. Of five children born, only two survive; Harriet M. Logue, of Chicago, and the subject of this biography, who was educated at the Peru High School and Earlham College. At eighteen years of age he began the study of medicine in the office of Drs. Constant and Walker, of this city, and in October, 1865, he entered the Rush Medical College at Chicago and graduated from that institution in 1866, and then returned to Peru, and engaged in the practice of his profession in partnership with Dr. Walker, one of his preceptors. This union practice continued until 1869, when Dr. Higgins removed to Rochester, Indiana, where he remained a short time and then returned to Peru and this has since been his residence. He still continues the active practice and is one of the leading physicians of Miami County. He was married January 22, 1868, to Miss Sarah E. Jay, of Miami County, daughter of Thomas Jay, deceased. To this issue are three children; Clara, Jesse and Alice. Dr. Higgins is Secretary of the Miami Medical Society, and Treasurer of the State Society and a member of the American Association. He also holds the position of consulting surgeon of the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific Hospital located at Peru. He is a Mason and a man of prominence and honor.

Michael Higgins, a pioneer of Hendricks County, was born Sept. 7, 1820, in Mercer County, Ky. He was but six months old when his parents, Thomas and Nancy Higgins, came to Putnam County, Ind., where they remained but a short time, when they came to Hendricks County, they being among the first settlers of Marion Township. Here his father entered 240 acres of land, and struggled hard to secure for his family a comfortable home. His death occurred in March, 1854. Michael Higgins was thus reared to manhood in Hendricks County, and with his father shared the toils of the day from early youth. April 26, 1843, he married Polly Robbins, daughter of William and Leah Robbins, natives of New York, at that time residents of Hendricks County. They have had four children--Sarah A., Jacob L., Christopher C., and Mary (deceased). In 1869 he removed from Marion and has since then made his home in the southern part of Eel River Township, owning a good farm of 184 acres. He served three years as Trustee of Marion Township. He is a member of the Christian church.

Michael Higgins was born in Putnam County, Ind., Aug. 5, 1823, a son of David and Helen (Mudd) Higgins, the former a native of Kentucky, born in 1795, and his mother of Maryland. They were married in Kentucky and soon after moved to Lawrence County, Ind., and later to Jefferson Township, Putnam County, and in March, 1831, came to Hendricks County and settled on the southeast quarter of section 33, Marion Township, on land entered by his brother Thomas in 1828. He became one of the most prosperous citizens of the county, adding to his first purchase till he owned a landed estate of 500 acres. His family consisted of eight children, three born in Putnam and five in Hendricks County--David, of Edgar County, Ill.; Michael; Mrs. Eliza Ann Cavett, of Lucas County, Iowa; John A., of Colorado; Mrs. Elizabeth Parker, of Saline County, Kas.; Mrs. Helen Aldrich, deceased; Mrs. Nancy Carter, of Hendricks County; and Mary Jane, deceased. Daniel Higgins died in 1851, and Mrs. Higgins several years later, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Carter, aged seventy-seven years. Michael Higgins was married Oct. 7, 1847, to Elizabeth Plaster, who was born Sept. 30, 1822, daughter of William Plaster, an early settler of Middle Township, where he died in 1880, his wife surviving him but a short time. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins have a family of six children--William T., David A., Mrs. Nancy Jane Wilson, Mrs. Cassandra Hunt, Charles E. and May. The eldest four are married and settled near the homestead, in Marion Township. Mrs. Higgins died Aug. 15, 1883. Mr. Higgins is the largest landowner in Marion Township, his title deeds showing the proprietorship of 880 acres of valuable land, including the greater part of his father's property. He is one of the reliable citizens of the township, and has served his townsmen as Trustee and Treasurer. In politics he is a Democrat

DAVID A. HIGGINS
It is a well authenticated fact that success comes as the result of legitimate and well applied energy, unflagging determination and perseverance in a course of action when once decided upon. She is never known to smile upon the idler or dreamer and she never courts the loafer, and only the men who have diligently sought her favor are crowned with her blessings. In tracing the history of David A. Higgins, of Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana, it is plainly seen that the success which he enjoys has been won by commendable qualities and it is also his personal worth that has gained for him the high esteem of those who know him.
David A. Higgins, deputy state oil inspector, was born in Hendricks County, Indiana, June 30, 1850. His parents were Michael and Elizabeth (Plasters) Higgins, his father's birth having occurred in Putnam County, this state. He came to this county when he was a boy with his parents. His mother was born in Kentucky and came to this county with her parents when a small child. Michael Higgins was a farmer in Marion Township, where he lived on the same farm until his death in 1904, at the age of eighty-one years. He was a member of the Christian Church at new Winchester, and served as trustee of Marion Township for three terms. His wife died at the age of sixty in 1882. They were the parents of six children: William, of Marion Township; David A., the immediate subject of this sketch; Mary J., wife of J.L. Wilson, of Marion Township; Cassandra, wife of Henry Hunt; Charles E., of Marion Township, and May, the wife of Willard Kellum, who lives on the home farm in Marion Township. 

David A. Higgins was reared on his father's farm and received the education which was afforded by the district schools of his home township. He had more than the ordinary taste for knowledge and after finishing the common school course in his township, he attended the academy at Ladoga for two years when it was in charge of Professor M.B. Hopkins, later superintendent of instruction for Indiana. Upon the completion of his education he returned to his father's farm and followed agricultural pursuits until 1893. In addition to carrying on a general system of diversified farming he was actively engaged in the buying and shipping of livestock. In fact, this was the main source of his income. In 1893 he moved to Danville, where he engaged in the hardware business for the next ten years. In 1910 he was appointed deputy oil inspector for Indiana, a position which he is still filling.

Mr. Higgins has long been identified with the Democratic Party in his county and his worth as a man is shown by the fact that he has been the county chairman of the Democratic Central Committee for the past eight years. Hendricks County was formerly Republican, but is now practically in the hands of the Democratic Party, only two of the county officers being Republicans.

Mr. Higgins was married December 1, 1881, to Angeline Hunt, the daughter of Ithamer and Fanny Jane Hunt, who were also residents of Marion Township. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins are faithful and consistent members of the Christian Church at Danville and are generous in their support of its various activities. Mr. Higgins is a member of the order of Free and Accepted Masons. He has ever enjoyed the respect and esteem of those who know him because of his friendly manner, marked ability in public affairs and upright living, and he
is regarded by all as one of the substantial and worthy citizens of this locality.

WILLIAM T. HIGGINS
One of the oldest and best known families in Hendricks County is the Higgins family, six generations of whom have lived in this county. David Higgins, the first of the family to come to Indiana, was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, in 1795. His wife, Helen Mudd, was a native of Maryland, whose parents had moved to Kentucky from their native state. Soon after their marriage, David Higgins and his young wife set out for Indiana, and in the spring of 1821 they stopped for a short time in Lawrence County. Later they moved on north and located about four miles south of Greencastle. In 1831 they came to Hendricks County and settled the southeast quarter section 33, in Marion Township, this land having been entered in 1828 by Thomas, the brother of David. On this farm David Higgins spent the rest of his life, dying in 1851, his wife surviving him several years. He proved to be a successful farmer and at the time of the death owned fifteen hundred acres of land in the county.

Michael Higgins, the father of William T., was born in Putnam County, August 5, 1823, and spent his boyhood days on his father David's farm. He was married on October 7, 1847, to Elizabeth Plaster, the daughter of William Plaster, an early settler of Middle Township, this county. Mrs. Michael Higgins was born September 30, 1822. To Mr. and Mrs. Michael Higgins were born six children, William T., David A., Mrs. Mary Jane Wilson, Mrs. Cassandra Hunt, Charles E., and May. Mrs. Michael Higgins died August 15, 1883. He was the largest land owner in Marion Township at one time, having eight hundred and eighty acres of valuable land in this township. Michael Higgins was a truly remarkable man and his ability was recognized by every one. He served his township as trustee and his county as treasurer, filling both offices to the entire satisfaction of his fellow citizens. He was a hard worker, a good manager, diligent, thrifty and persistent in carrying out his plans. He was of unusually upright character, strictly moral and took an active stand for righteousness and the betterment of humanity. He and his wife were members of the Christian Church and lived up to the teachings of the church as near as they possibly could. He died in April, 1903, a man who was loved by everyone with whom he came in contact.

William T. Higgins, the son of Michael Higgins and wife, was born October 2, 1848, in the township where he has spent his whole life. He lived at home until his marriage to Mary Underwood on January 23, 1877. She is a sister of Obed Underwood, a sketch of whom, elsewhere in this volume, gives the family history of the Underwood family. William began farming for himself about two miles northeast of New Winchester on a farm of his own. About two years after his marriage he moved to his present farm in the northwest part of Marion Township. He has been very successful, as is shown by his present farm of five hundred and sixty acres, of which four hundred acres are cultivable. He was formerly a heavy dealer in live stock, but has confined his energies to the raising of grain in the last few years. He has made many improvements on his place and has a very comfortable and attractive home. Mr. and Mrs. Higgins have three children: Oscar, born in 1878, who graduated in the New Winchester High School, and later married Olive Oakley, the daughter of James and Ellen (Ader) Oakley. James Oakley, born and reared in Putnam County, was the son of Lafayette and Midlred (Harris) Oakley. Mildred Harris was born in Kentucky and came to Putnam County in early childhood with her parents. Her mother's maiden name was Neeves. Lafayette Oakley also came from Kentucky in childhood and settled with his parents in Putnam County. Ellen Ader was born and reared in Putnam County and was the daughter of Adam and Margaret (Chatham) Ader. After Oscar Higgins, the eldest son of William T., was married he farmed in Putnam County for one year and then moved to his present home on his father's farm. Oscar and wife have two children, Edna Merle, and Virgil Wayne, who died recently. Clay, the second child of William T. and wife, died at the age of thirteen and the youngest son, Earl Glendon, is still at home. The wife and mother died in April, 1893. Politically, Mr. Higgins is a Democrat, though he has never aspired to public office. Religiously, the members of his family affiliate with the Christian Church.

which is a biography of George James Sharp who was born on a farm in Hendricks County, Indiana, December 26, 1862, a son of William P. and Anna T. (Higgins) Sharp.

The reference to Daniel Higgins reads: Of Mr. Sharp's maternal line reference should be made to his great-grandfather, Daniel Higgins, who was born in Augusta County, Virginia, in 1763. He was one of the boyish patriots in the Revolutionary war, and he afterwards drew a pension for his service. Much of this service was done on the western frontier, in fighting the Indians and their British allies. The annals of the Federal Government show a complete record of his various enlistments. He first enlisted in May, 1779, when sixteen years of age, and served one month as a private in Capt. Silas Hardin's company in the Virginia troops. Not long afterward he apparently crossed the mountains into Kentucky, since in April, 1780, he enlisted for a month as a private under Capt. John Cowan, and that service was rendered in Kentucky. In July, 1780, he enlisted, serving six weeks as private under Capt. John Ellison, also in Kentucky, in which state all his remaining enlistments were. In June, 1781, he enlisted and served six months as sergeant under Capt. John Ellison. In March, 1782, he enlisted for six weeks as sergeant under Maj. John Logan. There is record of another enlistment and several weeks of service during 1782 as private under Capt. John Martin. His last enlistment was in October, 1782, and he was a private in the ranks for six months under the noted scout and Indian fighter, Simon Kenton.

Charles "Red" Higgins
Funeral services for Charles "Red" HIGGINS, 58, who passed away at his home, 720 Indiana avenue, Thursday evening after a long illness, will be held at the Ora Foster funeral home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon with the American Legion and Rev. Harry BAILEY of the First Baptist church officiating. Burial will be made in the IOOF cemetery.
Charles Noah [HIGGINS], son of Newton and Nancy HIGGINS, was born in Osgood, Mo., Oct. 15, l886. About 33 years ago he came to Rochester, where has since resided. He was a veteran of World War I, and a member of LeRoy C. Shelton post, American Legion.
Surviving are his wife, Emma [HIGGINS]; two daughters, Mrs. R. D. WALTZ and Mrs. Glen MYERS, and several grandchildren, all of Rochester, and one sister, Mrs. George BROWNING of Harris, Mo.
The remains will be taken to the residence Saturday morning where friends may call until Sunday noon when it will be returned to the Funeral chapel.

Dr. John Higgins, who for some time before his death, on April 7, 1904, lived as a retired physician, was one of the early settlers of Crown Point, and in community affairs was prominent and influential, so that his life record forms an important chapter in the history of the city in which he made his home. He was born in Perry, Wyoming county, New York, May 28, 1822. Ebenezer Higgins, his grandfather, was born in Connecticut, the family having continuously remained in that portion of the country. David Higgins, the father, was also born in Connecticut and became a Civil Engineer. He married Miss Eunice Sackett, a native of Vermont, and his death occurred in New York. In their family were ten children, of whom Dr. Higgins was the seventh in order of birth. He was only about four years old when his parents removed from Wyoming county to Osborn, New York, where he remained until fourteen years of age. The family home was then established at Seneca Falls, where he remained until sixteen years old, when he came with his mother to the west, arriving at Chicago, Illinois, on the 2d of July, 1838. After a brief period passed in that city he removed to Vermillion County, Illinois, where the following winter he was engaged in teaching school. He afterward worked on a farm through the summer months and in the winter seasons continued teaching until 1843, when he took up the study of medicine. In the winter of 1843-44 he came to Lake County, Indiana, and in May of the latter year established his home at Crown Point where he began studying medicine with Dr. W. C. Farrington, who directed his reading for about two years.

In the year 1850 he went to California, crossing the plains to Sacramento, and spent a year in the mountains. On the expiration of that period he returned to Frankfort, Illinois, and in February, 1859, he established his home at Crown Point, Indiana. There he continued in practice until 1861, when he was appointed Surgeon of the Twelfth Illinois Cavalry, but was employed mainly as a Brigade Surgeon and in general hospitals in Chicago and Washington, where he remained for three years and four months, rendering active and efficient aid to the wounded soldiers. He made a most creditable record as an army surgeon, his aid being of great value to those who needed professional services.

In 1865 Dr. Higgins returned to Crown Point and located where he now lives. He was in active and continuous practice until 1900, and he had a large patronage, his efforts being very effective in alleviating human suffering. He kept in touch with modern progress in the line of his profession and through broad study maintained a foremost position among the representatives of his calling. He was examiner for different life insurance companies, and in the early days of his practice he rode for long distances across the country, even traveling from twenty-five to forty miles to attend a patient. His practice extending into Porter County, Indiana, and into Illinois.

In 1847 Dr. Higgins was married to Miss Diantha Tremper, who was born in Lewiston County, New York, and died in 1898. They had one daughter, Eunice A., who is now the widow of Julius W. Youche. Dr. Higgins was a Mason for many years and in early life was a Whig, casting his ballot for William Henry Harrison, although he had not then attained the age of twenty-one years. He continued to affiliate with the Whig party until the organization of the Republican party, after which time he was one of its stalwart advocates. he was at the time of his death the only surviving member of his father's family of ten children, one of whom died when forty-four years of age, three between the age of sixty and seventy, two between seventy and eight and two between the age of eighty and ninety. In his practice he was connected with the Indiana Medical Society, and was at one time a delegate to the American Medical Association. he long maintained a creditable position as a leading representative of the medical fraternity of northwestern Indiana, and his prominence in his profession was well deserved and his success was justly merited. He was very widely known throughout this portion of the state because of his active connection with the profession, which is of the greatest possible value to humanity, and was ever accounted one of its foremost members on account of his skill and also because of his fidelity tot he ethics of the profession.

Condensed Biography of ROBERT EMMETT HIGGINS

Born 1816 in Angelica, New York to parents descended from Mayflower lines and Revolutionary War Veterans. Was removed to Ohio at a very young age, following a harrowing winter trip on rivers and horseback. A letter telling of this trip from his mother to her in-laws in Bath, NY was reprinted in the June 1937 "Firelands Pioneer", at that time the letter was over 114 years old, this letter today is 178 years old. R. E. Higgins grew up in Norwalk, Huron Co. OHIO, where his father practiced law. He left home to go to school in WI at the Woodstock Institute in 1837 and there are several lost years in my information. In the family Bible I found an Abstinence Pledge signed by him in 1851, but does not give location. About 1852 he married a widow Mrs. Sarah A. Curtis, with young son and their oldest son David Cecil was born 1853 in Indianapolis, Marion Co. IN. They appear on the 1860 census of Shelbyville, Shelby Co. IN, Robert E. is now a Doctor and Surgeon. In 1870 the family is in Franklin, Johnson Co. IN and they lived there until moving back to Indianapolis in about 1879. Robert Emmett Higgins died in Indianapolis 2 July 1886, age 71.
