Edwin Higgins, a well-known farmer of Fair Haven township,
was born in St. Anthony, Minn., December 31, 1867, son of John
and Sarah (Newton) Higgins, and grandson of Edwin Higgins,
the elder. Edwin Higgins, the elder, was born in Ireland. He sailed
the oceans for many years, but eventually settled in Canada. John
Higgins was born in Ottawa, Canada. He brought his wife to section
30, Lynden township in 1866, and built two log houses. He cleared
the land and developed the farm, and in time erected-frame
buildings. Edwin Higgins, the subject of this sketch, received his
early education in the Lynden schools, one of his teachers being
Sophia Pratt. He was reared on the home farm, and started out for
himself at the age of fourteen years. For seven summers he worked
for J. H. Baldwin. In 1890 he went to Montana, and for three or four
years devoted his time to various occupations such as herding
cattle, railroad work and the like. After this he worked several
seasons as a harvester. Mr. Higgins now has a splendid farm of 120
acres near the home of his parents. The place is in a high stage of
cultivation, and everywhere bespeaks the thrift and energy of the
owner. The residence erected in 1910 is home-like and comfortable
and the other buildings are modem and commodious. Mr. Higgins is a
most estimable man, he has a bright and active partner in life, and
they are both proud of their interesting family of children. Mr.
Higgins was married in 1894 to Mary, the daughter of
Martin and Catherine (Dougherty) Daley, and they have 5
children; Laura, Ethel, Sarah, Martin
and Louise.

Derby, James Terry White
HIGGINS, Arthur M.,
lawyer, was born at Ellsworth, Me., June 18, 1867, son of Charles
H. and Sarah J. (Young) Higgins. His father had commanded
a brigautine; served throughout the civil war with the 11th Maine
Vol. Inf.; subsequently became a nurseryman at Flushing, L. I., N.
Y.; removed to Minneapolis in 1884 and was treasurer of the
Congregational Society of that city, but eventually returned to
Maine. Arthur M. Higgins received his preliminary education
in the schools of Flushing. He was awarded a scholarship at Cornell
University, but impaired health prevented him entering that
institution. In 1889 he matriculated at the college of law of the
University of Minnesota, where ill health again interrupted his
studies, but he was graduated at that institution in 1893 with the
degree of LL.B. In that year he was admitted to the bar of Minnesota
and began the practice of his profession as a member of the firm of
Bartlett, Robinson & Higgins, with Wm. W. Bartlett and John R.
Robinson. Since 1894, however, he has practised independently. He is
a member of the Minneapolis Bar Association; Minneapolis Civic and
Commerce Association; Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and
of the Minneapolis Athletic Club, Minneapolis. He is a communicant
of St. Paul's Protestant Episcopal Church. His political affiliation
is with the Republican party. He finds his chief recreation in
baseball, and in general out-of-doors sports, particularly at his
country seat at Lake Minnetonka. He was married May 16, 1893, to
Virginia, daughter of Adolphus Bradford, of Minneapolis
and Lake Minnetonka, Minn., and founder of the Bradford Rainwater
Hat Co., St. Louis, and has two children: Virginia and
Josephine Higgins.

WILLIAM HIGGINS is the
proprietor of the livery, feed and sale stable at
Lismore, in
which town he has resided since the summer of 1901. He is a native
of Seneca, Illinois., where he was born Oct. 12, 1869, the son of
Jeremiah and Mariah (Corbett) Higgins. The father was
born in Ireland in 1828 and came to the United States with his
parents when a child. The family resided at Fort Dearmont (where the
city of Chicago now stands) the first six months in the new world,
and then removed to Kickapoo (now Seneca), 111. There Jeremiah
Higgins lived until his death, which occurred in 1897. Our subject's
mother was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and died in
Seneca in 1905,
aged 65 years.
William Higgins resided in his native county until he was 32 years
of age. He obtained his
primary education in Seneca, finishing it in Valpariso,
Indiana. After his school days he engaged in teaching school near
Seneca, which he followed five years. He then opened a meat market
in his native town and conducted that nine years. He came to Lismore
in June, 1901, and opened the first butcher shop in that village. He
conducted the shop four and one-half years and then sold to Charles
Rusho. In 1905 he bought the livery barn of Michael Plemp, and he
has since been in the livery business.
Mr. Higgins was married in Lismore Nov. 15, 1903, to Eda Graf, a
native of Stillwater, Minn., and a daughter of Emil Graf, president
of the State Bank of Lismore. They are the parents of the following
named children: Allen, Francis and May.

John Higgins - From New York to Minnesota
I am a descendant of a John Higgins, born about
1836 in Syracuse, New York. His father was a Thomas Higgins,
born in Ireland. His mother may have been a Mary, also born in
Ireland.
John later moved to Minnesota and first married a Bridget
McGuire, when she passed away, he married Johanna Power
(also of Ireland). John died May 9, 1894 in Dodge County, Minnesota.
If I calculate back, his birth date would have been May 23, 1836 -
though most census has him born more like 1838. If there is any
information regarding this family, please contact me. I seem to be
standing at a brick wall with this line.
Thank you!
