Mold is a market-town, in the parish and hundred of its name, county of Flint; 189 miles N.W. from London (by way of Wrexham), and 193 (by the route of Chester and Whitchurch), 7 S. from Flint, and 16 E. from Denbigh; pleasantly situate on the river Alum, or Alyn, in the midst of a pleasing and fertile country, and in a district rich in coal and lead ores.

It is a place of considerable antiquity, and supposed to have been a station of the Romans, but how designated by that nation is not recorded. Its principal remnant of antiquity consists of the remains of its ancient castle, which was mostly destroyed by Gryffed ap Gwywyn, in 1263; and near the town is Maes Garmon, or 'German Field,' so named from a victory obtained by the Germans, over the Pagans, Picts, and Saxons, to perpetuate the remembrance of which an obelisk was erected on the supposed scene of the battle, by a Mr. Griffith, in 1730.

The town consists of four tolerably wide and neat streats, through which pass the high roads from Chester to Ruthin, and from Flint to Wrexham. The government of the town is vested in a portreeve, and constables, who are annually chosen at the court-leet of the lord of the manor. The court of assize of the Chester circuit is held twice a year in an elegant new town hall and court-house, lately erected at the expense of the county; and the quarter sessions likewise take place in the same building. Mold shares with Flint and other places (named under the latter town) in the privilege of returning one member to parliament.

In former times great quantities of coarse woollen cloth were manufactured here: this branch has entirely disappeared, and the chief prosperity of the town and its neighbourhood arises, at the present day, from the extensive mining operations, coal and lead ore being obtained here in great abundance. Among other principal branches are a cotton spinning manufactory, called the 'Mold Cotton Mill Company,' a flourishing establishment; an iron and brass foundry, and a respectable tannery: the making of nails, and malting and lime-burning are also carried on here, by several persons.

St Mary's, Mold, c1917 - click for enlargement The places of worship are the parish church, a neat edifice, in the Gothic style of architecture, and chapels for independents, Wesleyan methodists and calvinists. The living of Mold is a vicarage, in the patronage of the Bishop of St. Asaph: the present incumbent is the Rev. Charles Butler Clough. The principal charities are a national school, well supported by voluntary contributions; and an excellently conducted hospital.

The market days are Wednesday and Saturday; and the fairs are held on the 13th of February, 12th of May, 2nd of August, and 22nd of November. The parish of Mold (including the chapelries of NERQUIS and TREDDYN) contained, in 1821, 7,320 inhabitants, and in 1831, 9,385. The actual population of Mold does not appear in the government returns.
