Ruthin is a market town, in the parish and hundred of its name, in the county of Denbigh; 206 miles N.W. from London, 21 w. by s. from Chester, 46 N.W. from Shrewsbury, and 8 s. by e. from Denbigh; most delightfully situate in the Vale of Clwyd, and on the river of that name, over which is a neat bridge.

The town is of great antiquity, and has suffered at various times from the broils of its chiefs, but Owen Glendwr surpassed them in revenging his wrongs, which he imputed to Lord Gray, of Ruthin. Having entered the town on the 20th of September, 1400, and unfortunately it being the fair day, he and his followers plundered the people, and then burnt the town. The site of the ancient castle now supports a splendid modern edifice, in the castellated style, erected by the Hon. Frederick West.

The present town consists chiefly of one street, about a mile in length, which is embellished with several public buildings; among which is the town-hall, a spacious and handsome edifice, in which the great assizes for the county, and a court-leet are held twice a year; besides a court for the recovery of debts to any amount, and for the trial of real personal actions every fortnight. The county gaol is a neat, strong, and well-constructed building. The town is governed by two aldermen, who are annually elected; and the burgesses, in conjunction with those of Denbigh, Wrexham, and Holt, enjoy the privilege of returning one member to parliament.

The church, a large, handsome and venerable pile, is dedicated to St. Peter: the living is a wardenship, in the patronage of the dean and chapter of Westminster; the present warden is the Rev. Richard Newcome, M.A., who is also rector of the parishes of Llanwroe and Llanrhydd. The other places of worship are four commodious chapels for dissenters.

The principal charitable institution is Ruthin free grammar school, founded in the time of Queen Elizabeth, by Dr. Gabriel Goodman, dean of Westminster (who also endowed an almshouse, designated Christ's hospital). From this school many eminent and distinguished scholars have been produced; among those who have filled high office situations, both in church and state, educated here, might be mentioned Dr. John Williams, lord keeper and archbishop of York; Dr. Josiah Tucker, dean of Gloucester, and that able and learned lawyer, the late Lord Kenyon.

The splendid mansion of Lord Bagot, in Pool park; and many other seats, with which this neighbourhood is studded, add greatly to the beauty of the surrounding scenery. Within a short distance of Ruthin, on the summit of the highest of the Glwydian mountains, is a large tower, erected to commemorate the period when his late Majesty George III. completed the 50th year of his reign.

The market-days are Monday and Saturday, for corn and provisions, and two large markets are held on the next Monday but one before and after Christmas day. The fairs are on the 19th of March, the Friday before Whit-Sunday, 8th of August, 30th of September, and 10th of November, for cattle and pediary.

The parish contained, in 1821, 1,294 inhabitants, and in 1831, 3,376; this great increase is attributed to part of Llanfrog parish being added to that of Ruthin, which was not in the government returns for the latter parish at the census taken in 1821.
