Sometime between 1864 and 1866 John and Eliza McQuaid and family came to Mercer County from Pennsylvania. Son Mathew McQuaid and wife Catherine accompanied them. Catherine McQuaid died April 7, 1870, age 25 years, 11 months, and 12 days and is buried in New Boston Cemetery. Buried with her is daughter Laura E. McQuaid and it is probable that Catherine died in childbirth.

Mathew returned home to his family and they are found in the Town of New Boston in the 1870 Census: John McQuade, carpenter, age 56, born Pennsylvania; Eliza, 52, Pa; Eliza I., 21, Pa; Sarah, 18, Pa; William H, 16, Pa; Amanda, 14, Pa; Barbara E., 12, Pa; John (Jr), 8, Pa; Emma, 6, Pa; Mathew, 25, Teaming, Pa; James D. Downs, 8, Pa; Sarah J. Downs, 6, Pa. It is possible the William McQuade found working for a Gilmore family in Duncan Township, age 19, farm laborer, born Pennsylvania, is this William McQuade. Because of the age difference it is more likely he was connected to the McQuade families of Rock Island County, just north of Mercer. When time permits we will try to find out more about the Rock Island McQuades to see if they are connected to this family.

John and Eliza had another daughter, Malinda, who married Benjamin Webber on 5/9/1866 in Mercer County. Benjamin and Malinda are living next door to John and Eliza in New Boston Town in 1870: Benjamin Webber, 29, Farmer, born Pa; Malinda (McQuade), 22, Pa; Sarah E., 2, Il; Frank, 1, Il. Benjamin is likely the son of Andrew and Jane Webber of North Henderson Township as that entire family was also from Pennsylvania: Andrew Webber, 67, born Pa; Jane, 52, born St(?); Adelia, 23, Pa; Catharine, 21, Pa; Andrew F., 18, Pa; Sarah A., 7, Pa. Nearby: George A. Webber, 35, farmer, Pa; Melissa, 34, Pa; Lucy, 10, Pa; Sarah L., 7, Pa; James C., 4, Il. It is possible the Webber and McQuade families came together from Pennsylvania.

Son Mathew McQuaid married again on 12/25/1871 to Mrs. Lucinda McMannus Sloan (See McMannus family in Miscellaneous Families). Lucinda died in 1872 and we do not find another marriage for Mathew in Mercer County. He may have left the area.

Son William H. McQuaid is buried in New Boston Cemetery. The record reads died 1/15/1870 but he is shown in the 1870 census so the reading may not be correct. Son John died 11/12/1870, age 8 yr 9 mo 17 dys. We suspect William's death date may also be November 1870 and that they both died of disease.

Daughter Sarah McQuade married Adam Main 10/11/1871. We have not traced this family further.

John & Eliza McQuade are found in Keithsburg in 1880 and more light is shed on their ancestry: John S. McQuade, 60, farmer, born Pa, father born Ireland, mother born Pa; Eliza, 56, born Pa, father born Tn, mother, born Pa; Maggie (Amanda), 23, born Pa; (Barbara) Ella, 20 born Pa; Emma, 16, born Pa. A grandson Fred, or Fird, age 4, is living with them that we cannot identify. His mother was born Indiana, father born Pennsylvania.

Daughter Maggie Amanda McQuade married William H. Beegle 2/12/1881; Daughter Barbara Ella McQuade married William H. Weidling on 4/6/1881, all in Mercer County. Emma is possibly the Jennie McQuade who married Stewart S. Harper on 10/19/1881 in Mercer County, as that is the only other McQuade/McQuaid marriage in Mercer County that we cannot account for.

Elizabeth McQuaid, wife of John, died 10/8/1882 and is buried in New Boston Cemetery.
