He was born in 1843/44, in Pennsylvania, probably to Robert Hawks and Mary [unknown family name]. [sources: date: 3 (19 in 1861), 5 (6 in 1850), 6 (15 in 1860), 7 (55 in 1899), 8 (55 in 1899), 9 (55 in 1899). place: 5, 6. parents: 5, 6, 9]

In 1850, he was probably living in ward 6, Spring Garden, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Robert and Mary Hawks (presumably his parents), and with John and James Hawks (presumably his siblings). He had attended school within the year. [source: 5]

In 1860, he was probably living in ward 14, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was living with Robert and Mary Hawks (presumably his parents), and with James and Matilda Hawks (perhaps his brother and sister-in-law). He had attended school within the year. [source: 6]

His brother John N Hawks also served in company D of the 91st, under the alias 'James Clark' (4).

During the war

He enlisted and was mustered into service on 9 January 1862 (1, 3). He enlisted at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3). He was mustered in as a private, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (3). He was a private in company D (1, 12, 13).

He was discharged at US General Hospital, Frederick, Maryland, on 29 December 1862 on surgeon's certificate of disability (1, 2 [medical board], 3). He was a private, in company D (12, 13).

After the war

In May/June 1863, he was living at 1804 Seybert Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was married, and was not working. [source: 10]

Probably in fall 1863 and in fall 1865, he was a turner, and was living in 1826 Seybert Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 11]

Probably in fall 1888, he was a plumber, living at 1529 South Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 11]

Probably in fall 1891, and in fall 1893, he was a plumber, living at 1721 Burton Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 11]

Probably in fall 1895, fall 1896, and fall 1897, he was a plumber, living at 4149 Westminster Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [source: 11]

On 2 April 1899, he (probably) died, in Philadelphia Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He died of nephritis. He was widowed. He was a nurse. On 6 April 1899, he was buried, in Mount Moriah Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. [sources: 7, 8, 9]

Samuel is not living with Robert (56 b. Ireland, laborer) and Mary (57 b. Ireland) Hawkes, who were living in district 43 ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, microfilm series M593, film 1399, page 345 verso = 118 handwritten (FamilySearch)
Perhaps his father is the Robert Hawks who died on 25 July 1872 in Philadelphia, residence 1736 or 1738 Callowhill Street, and was buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery [see FamilySearch; his death notice is in the Philadelphia Inquirer Saturday 27 July 1872, page 5: 'HAWKS.--On the 25th instant, ROBERT HAWKS after a lingering illness, in the 65th year of his age. [paragraph] 'The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from his late residence, No. 1736 Callowhill street, this (Saturday) afternoon, at 2 o'clock. To proceed to Mount Moriah Cemetery.'
