Before the war

He was born on 4 January 1827, in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, (2, 3, 15 (Irishtown); 4 (70 in 1892), 8 (44 in 1865), 12 (31 in 1860), 13 (46 in 1870), 14 (58 in 1880)). He was born in Liberty Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, (2, 3, 15 [Irishtown]). He was born to Jacob Shrader and Magdalene Clark (2).

He moved to Irishtown, Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania, in 1850 (New Oxford post office) (3).

On 21 April 1853, he married Catharine McClain (2). They had 3 children:

He rented from Hen. J. L. Jenkins and lived there until his death (3).

In 1860, he was living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (12). He was living with his wife Kate and daughter Mary (12). He was a day laborer, and owned $100 in personal property (12).

In 1863 he is listed a a carpenter; in other places he is listed as a laborer or workman (2, 5, 6).

Description

When he enlisted, he was five feet ten or eleven inches tall, had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair (5, 6).

During the war

He was drafted for nine months in 1862 (3). He enlisted on 16 October 1862 (5, 9). He was mustered into service on 6 November 1862 (7). He was in company H of the 165th Pennsylvania militia (2, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11). His captain was William H. Brogunier (2, 5). He was discharged with his company on 29 July 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (2, 5, 7 [28 July], 9 [28 July]).

He enlisted, as a draftee, on 28 February 1865 at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania (1, 6, 8, 9). He was a private in company F (1, 6, 16).

He mustered out on 10 July 1865 with his company (1, 6, 8, 9). He was a private, in company F (16).

After the war

In 1870, he was living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (13). He was living with his wife Catherine and children Mary and Henry (13). He was a laborer, and owned $100 in personal property (13).

In 1880, he was living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (14). He was living with his wife Catharine and children Mary and Henry (14). He was a cigar maker (14).

On 12 August 1882, he applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (10, 11).

In 1890, he was living in Oxford Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (post office: Irishtown) (9).

He died on 10 January 1892, of cancer (2, 3, 4, 10, 15). His obituary describes him as a "good workman and obliging neighbor" (3).

He was buried on a Tuesday, at the Basilica of The Sacred Heart of Jesus (Conewago Chapel) Catholic Cemetery, in Edge Grove, Conewago Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania (2, 3, 15).

On 30 January 1892, his widow, Catharine Shrader, applied successfully from Pennsylvania for a pension (10, 11).
