Virginia Census, 1607-1890
about Thos Durham
Name: Thos Durham
State: VA
County: Richmond County
Township: Farnham Parish
Year: 1751
Record Type: Rent Role
Database: VA Early Census Index

From the Texas group Tradition is that Thomas came to America in 1721 with a ship load of young emigrants, many being young married people. James Allen Durham told his grandson George William Durham that Thomas got on that boat with a large number of other young men and women, thinking that it was a sight-seeing trip until they were too far from shore to swim back and were told that they were on their way to America. On the ship he met, courted and later married a Scotch lass named Margaret Lindsey, nicknamed "Peggy". Family tradition says that she lost her bonnet overboard and that Thomas told her he would marry her and buy her a new bonnet. The story continues that his brother, Matthew Durham, either on the ship or a little earlier, had married Suzanna Lindsey. The records of the Texas DAR show that Matthew Durham Sr, was a soldier in the Revolutionary War was born in Orange County, North Carolina and Married Susanna Lindsey sometime prior to 21 November 1752. She was born in North Carolina on July 20, 1731 and died after February 1796 probably in North Carolina. They had nine children Thomas, William Lindsey, John, Matthew, Ambrose, Lysias, Mary, Jane and Mark. Their son Matthew also a soldier in the Revolutionary war married Fannie Spenser and they had fourteen Children. There is some indication is that Thomas may have been born in Lunemburg Co in 1742 certainly the dates are more likely. The Thomas born in 1696 may have been the father of This Thomas. Thomas and Peggy Lindsey Durham had nine sons, perhaps some daughters, and all of the sons fought in the Revolutionary War. No Tory was known among them. Two died at Valley Forge in 1776 from the hardships of winter. The Oldest son was named Thomas who became a Primative Baptist preacher. The names of the six others were William, James, Joel, Nathanel, John and Joab. All these save the last two made their homes in Tennessee. John first lived in Virginia then moved to North Carolina. Joab moved from Virginia to North Carolina and later settled in Pulaski County, Georgia. In Lunenberg County, Virginia, in 1749 a Thomas Durham was listed as having 7 tythes of land on Hounds Creek and the Meherrin River.
