Name: | Jack Brummett : j.brummett sbcglobal.net |
Date: | 2006-01-05 |
Ancestor Name(s) | Richard Gilliam |
Date(s) and Location(s) | b. 1771 Buckingham Co., VA |
Comments: | I read your submission to the Gilliam list with great interest. Currently I am finalizing for printing an 800-page genealogy manuscript of my ggg grandfather, John Gilliam. His father was Richard Gilliam (1771, Buckingham Co., VA - 1845, Scott Co, VA) and his mother was a Judith Stidham. Some Gilliam researchers list Richard's parents as William Gilliam (1747-1793 Buckingham Co., VA) and Elizabeth Ellis. I have very little confidence in the accuracy of the data recorded on my Gilliam ancestors beyond Richard and Judith. I hope you may have some information that you will share that shed some light on this. I am happy to share any date on Richard's descendants in which you may have an interest. My efforts are non-commercial and costs of the hard-bound book will cover only printing and shipping expenses. Jack Brummett, Austin, TX Notes follow: Gilliam genealogists do not have proof that William Gilliam was the father of Richard. However, by analysis of the data that currently exists on Richard's line, several of them surmise that William Gilliam, who died in Buckingham County, Virginia, in 1792, was the father of at least four sons: John, David, Richard and William. Property records and census records establish the four Gilliam brothers moved from Buckingham County in 1801 and settled in the part of Russell County that became Scott County in 1814. Additionally, Lilburn Glen Gilliam, Rt. 1, Gate City, Virginia, wrote in 1988, "I believe I am sending you proof from Richard and Judith forward to me, but before them there are too many of the same name (confusing if we are not in the right generation). I believe Richard, Sr.'s dad came to Russell Co. (now Scott Co, VA) by way of old deed calling for the old Billy Gilliam corner, then it seems there were 2 or 3 generations back to the William that came from England. These Gilliams owned land up on Copper Creek from where I live 5 or 6 miles." Lilburn Glen is saying that the William Gilliam shown in this family group chart is the Billy Gilliam he refers to and is the father of our Richard, Sr. and grandfather of our Wise County John Gilliam. Joseph Nimrod Adams reports that Richard's family is shown in the 1820 Scott County Census and lists the number of children in each age group. Judith is shown as over 45 years of age, and although it is not certain she was a Stidham, most Gilliam researchers believe she was a daughter of Samuel Stidham. Jack E. Stidham reports Judith Stidham was probably born aout 1771/5 in Surry County, North Carolina and married Richard about 1786. First child, William G., was born 1787. Judith could have been born in Virginia and probably visited her two brothers, Adam and David, who went to Virginia. Samuel Stidham (Revolutionary War veteran) and son Samuel, Jr and others went to Perry Co, Kentucky. Several of Richard's children moved to Kentucky from Scott County. Sons Richard, Jr and James moved to Elliott County, Kentucky, where Richard married Charity Rogers as his wife had died. He gave his age as over 60 at that time, making his marriage to Charity about 1855. James married Charity Bogges in Kentucky and Delila, Isom, Mary and Chesley died in Kentucky. 1820 census of Scott Co,VA, Richard was over 45 yrs of age, had 2 males less than 10 yrs; 1, 10-15; 2, 16-18; 2, 16-25; females, Judith over 45 yrs & 1 female less than 10; 1, 16-25. It is not certain that Judith was a Stidham (jna). Richard fought under Gen. Wm. Campbell at the Battle of Kings Mtn during the Rev. War. In 1830 census he had a male in household b. 1810-15 with him & wife. All of Richard Gilliam's ancestors were submitted to LDS by Louie S. Ison and this is apparently where the data came from. Joseph Nimrod Adams. Additional notes: The following is an undocumented genealogy of the ancestors of William Gilliam and Elizabeth Ellis: According to several sources William Gilliam married Elizabeth Ellis, born 1756 in Henry Co, VA. Since their oldest children were born 1760-1761, this doesn't appear possible. However, "the first installment of [IT:The Ellis Family:IT] written by Thomas H. Ellis of Richmond, Virginia, 1849, it has been added to by heirs and family members of Major Powhatan Ellis' family," evidently indicates that Elizabeth Ellis, b. 5 January 1754 m. William Gilliam and they moved to Georgia. If the birth date for Elizabeth of 1756 is incorrect and the Elizabeth who moved to Georgia is another Elizabeth Ellis, daughter of someone other than Charles Ellis and Susannah Harding, the following lineage is possible: a. William Gillum, Sr. born 1720, Bristol Parish, VA married Mary Jarrett, born 5 May 1724 in Virginia, daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Bradley Jarrett. b. John Gillum, Jr. born 1666 Bristol Parish, VA married Lucy Henry, born 1690 in Surry, VA. Married in Lundburg, VA. John died Gainsville, NC. Lucy's father was Patrick Henry (not THE Patrick Henry.). c. John Gillum, Sr. born 1614, Gravesend, Kent, England, wife unknown, died 1651, Norfolk, VA. d. Sir Richard Devereaux Gillum, born 1582, Gravesend, Kent, England, married Dorothy (?), born 1584, England, daughter of the Earle of Pembroke, who was beheaded by the Lancasterians. William and John Gillum, sons of Sir Richard Gillum, came to America in 1635 aboard the Constance with the Royal Commission to survey and map the Dominion of Virginia. They were prominent during the colonial and Revolutionary period. |

Comments: | I enjoyed crusing around your web site. I was interested in Dr. Philip Southall who first married Francis Lockett and had sons Stephen b.1816 and Philip b.1822. Francis d.1823. I did not know Elizabeth Webster became his 2nd wife in 1824 was until I found your site and they had 9 children. I found Philip in 1830 P.E. Co. P.101 with his family. There was 1 male<10 which has to be Philip by Francis Lockett and 1 male<5 which would be Anthony by Elizabeth Webster. Do you know where oldest son Stephen might be during this census? At a boarding accadamy/college? Don't go to any trouble; I am just curious if you know. I am primarily a Lockett researcher who is just trying to fill in some blanks. By the way, I assume you have read about this family in Southern Kith & Kin by Scarborough or Thomas Lockett of VA by Blankenburg. If not, perhaps they may have some tidbit that you may not be aware of. Jim Lockett |

In following census records it looks as though George's father was Samuel Mahaffy and his wife; Lizzie's parents seem to be James and Nancy Shields.
