Downham Market, Norfolk

"From Lynn, I bent my course to Downham, where is an ugly wooden bridge over the Ouse; from whence we pass'd the fenn country to Wisbich, but saw nothing that way to tempt our curiosity but deep roads, innumerable dreyns and dykes of water, all navigable, and a rich soil, the land bearing a vast quantity of good hemp; but a base unwholsom air;"

Daniel Defoe: A Tour through England and Wales divided into circuits or journeys (vol. 1) (London:1927)

My connection with Downham Market is through my 2x gt g'parents John & Susan CATCHPOLE who married in St Edmund's church on 12 Aug 1849. They were living in Downham in 1851 and 1861. John was buried here in 1863. My gt g'parents Robert & Eliza CHAPMAN married at the Primitive chapel, on London Rd, on 17 Jun 1880. My father Dennis BRUCE is also buried in the town cemetery.
