Robert and Eliza CHAPMAN

(née CATCHPOLE)

robertRobert CHAPMAN was born in Wimbotsham, Norfolk on 12th February 1858, to William and Ellen CHAPMAN (née BONUS).

He worked for the Hare Estate as a general labourer, and also managed the cricket ground. He loved fishing and smoking his pipe. Joan remembers him as being a nice old man.

He died on 19 July 1943 and is buried at Stow Bardolph with Eliza.

 elizaEliza CATCHPOLE was born on 15th June 1855 to John and Susan CATCHPOLE (née CANWELL). at Lynn Rd, Downham Market, Norfolk. I believe they lived in the house which is now Sew-In, next to the Wesleyan Chapel.

Before she married, she worked as a domestic servant for a butcher, (William Bunkall) in the High Steet in Downham. (ref: 1871 Census for Downham.)

She died on 2 Dec 1933 after a long illness, and is buried at Stow Bardolph with Robert.

Robert & Eliza's children

 beatriceBeatrice was Eliza's illegitimate daughter,born in 1880. Beatrice married Ernest Gage MARTIN, and had one daughter, Phyllis. She appears to have lived with her grandparents William and Susan, in Stow Bardolph, as that is where she is on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses.

She died on 15th April 1953.

 

adaAda was born in 1889. In 1901 she was in hospital in King's Lynn. She moved to London, and married Harry PAINTIN after 1906 (she was witness to her sister Nell's marriage). They ran a sweet shop together on Prince of Wales Rd, St Pancras. Harry died in 1943. At Easter and Christmas we used to receive wonderful boxes of chocolates of all descriptions. They had no children.

She died on 8th February 1975.

 

nellNell (Ellen) was born in 1881 - Robert and Eliza's first child.In 1901 she was working in her Aunt Sarah's sweet shop in Malden Rd, St Pancras. This was where she met Ron AUTHERS, a printer, from St Pancras. They married in Stow Bardolph in 1906.

She was in the Red Cross during WW1.

She died on 30th March 1963.

emma  Emma was born on 15th July 1891. Here she is in 1901. She went to London in her teens to work. In 1911 she was a 19 yr old assistant in a confectioner's shop in New Cross.

She married Richard WEEDEN (and became my grandmother.)

fredFred was born in 1884. He didn't marry. He lived in Hilgay for most of his adult life.

He died on 10th June 1976.

daisy Daisy was born in 1896. Aged 14 in 1911. Daisy married Albert Lake and lived in Stow Bardolph all her life,running the Post Office for many years. She had one daughter Marjorie. Click here for more about Daisy & Albert.

She died on 1st March 1989 at Hunstanton.

tedAlbert Edward (Ted ) married twice, Minnie and ----. I have not found his baptism yet, but on the 1891 census, he was aged 5 which would make his birth year 1886. In 1911 he was at home, single, aged 25, a horseman on a farm

 

frankFrank WRIGHT was born in 1895 to Mary Anne(née Chapman) and Henry WRIGHT and was raised by Robert and Eliza alongside their other seven. Aged 15 in 1911. He married Lilian and had 2 sons, Lawrence and Basil. He died in 1980.
