The 50th wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Ervine Sladen of 5 Normand avenue was celebrated at a reception Saturday afternoon at the parish hall of St George's Episcopal Church. Eighty relatives and friends attended the affair which was given by the couple's family. Among the guests were Mr Sladen's cousins, Mrs Marjorie Foxton of Rochdale, England, and Mr and Mrs Bernard Walker of Solihull, England; amd Mrs Sladen's brother, Fred Savageau of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Miss Joy Marie Milligan, a great-granddaughter, was in charge of the guest book. Mr and Mrs Sladen were married May 24, 1920, at the rectory of St George's Episcopal Church. She is the former Marie Savageau of Sanford. Mrs Sladen is a member of St Elizabeth's Guild and active at the Trafton Senior Citizen Center. Mr Sladen, a native of Rochdale, England, has resided here 60 years. He was employed by the American Cynamid Company prior to his retirement. The couple has two children, George Sladen of Sanford and Mrs Dorothy Milligan of Augusta, Georgia; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A buffet lunch was served, Mr and Mrs Sladen cutting a special golden wedding cake. Many gifts, cards, flowers and a money tree were presented to Mr and Mrs Sladen.

General Notes: Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Hurd Funeral Home, Winter street, for Arthur E Whitcomb, 49, electronic technician at the Kittery Navy Yard, who died suddenly Saturday at his home, 260 Main street, where he was born. The Reverend Charles Desrochers of the St Ignatius Church officiated. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery. A life-long resident of Sanford, the son of Eugene and Alice Fletcher Whitcomb, he was a former wire inspector for the town. Mr Whitcomb was a member of Sanford Lodge of Elks, Bauneg Beg Grange, the Sanford-Springvale Fish and Game Protective Association and former member of Riverside Lodge, Knights of Pythias. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Florence Maurice Whitcomb; two daughters, Mrs George F Sladen of Sanford and Mrs John W Thompson of Panama City, Florida.

General Notes: Mrs Florence Marie Whitcomb, 62, widow of Arthur E Whitcomb, died late Monday evening at the H D Goodall Hospital after a long illness. She resided at 284 Main street. She was born October 28, 1890 in Dover, New Hampshire, the daughter of Albert and Florence Belanger Maurice. A Sanford resident the past 34 years, she was a past trustee of the Emblem Club and also was a member of Mater Circle, Daughters of Isabella, the Catholic Action Group and the Altar Society of St Ignatius Church. Mrs Whitcomb is survived by two daughters, Mrs John W Thompson of Quincy, Florida, and Mrs George F Sladen of Sanford; two sisters, Miss Florienne Maurice and Mrs William Sullivan of Dover, New Hampshire; two brothers, Selectman Maurice J Maurice of Sanford and Raymond G Maurice of Dover, New Hampshire; five grandchildren, two nephews and two nieces. Services were conducted this morning at the Hurd Funeral Chapel, 10 Winter street, followed by a Solemn High Requiem Mass at St Ignatius Church. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery.

In 1968, The Brothers of Christian Fellowship dedicated the Baseball Field (to which he did all the excavating work) in his name. The small plaque still stands today (1999) in front of the Food Hall and the baseball field is in the back. It is located in Alfred, York, Maine off of Route 202.

He sold his house on Gowen Street in Sanford for approximately $2500.00 and bought an 85 +/- acre field with a farmhouse on it for approximately $4500.00 (corner of June Street in Sanford, York, Maine). He started his own concrete business R. Pepin & Sons Construction on the land he purchased shortly after the depression.

Rudolph J Pepin, Local Contractor Many Years, Dies

Rudolph J Pepin, 60, president of R Pepin and Sons, general contractors here, died early Tuesday morning shortly after entering the Henrietta D Goodall Hospital. He resided on Shaw's Ridge Road. Mr Pepin, a native of St Norbert, Quebec, was born October 1, 1898, son of Ludger and Jeanne Pepin and had resided here for the past 35 years. He was a communicant of Holy Family Church and a member of the League of Sacred Heart, Order of Altar Society, Les Artisans, and Order of the Propagation of the Faith. He is survived by his widow, the former Lydia Voyer; four sons, Gerard of Kennebunk and Sylvio, Bertrand and Roger, all of Sanford; three daughters, Mrs Leo Dolbec, Mrs Alvie Caron and Mrs Donald Berthiaume, all of this town; four brothers, Nelson, and Robert Pepin, both of Montreal, Conrad of Sherbrooke, Quebec, and Armand, Conway, New Hampshire; six sisters, Mrs Philippe Gagne, Mrs Ernest Hurtubise and Miss Jeanne Pepin and Mrs Arthur Laitres, all of Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mrs Bernard Foucault and Mrs Alferi Allard, both of Sanford; and 27 grandchildren. Prayers will be said at the LaFrance Funeral Home Friday morning, 7:30 am followed by a Solemn High Requiem Mass at Holy Family Church, Entombment will be in St Ignatius Cemetery.

Mr Bland was a former spinning room foreman at the Goodall-Sanford mills. he was a 50-year member of the Preble Lodge, AF & AM. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Donald R of Springvale and Raymond E of Alexandria, Virginia; three daughters, Mrs Gertrude Pepin of Sanford, Mrs Pauline Wilson of Oxen Hill, Maryland, and Mrs Beatrice Corley of Yakima, Washington; a brother, Howard Bland, St Petersburg, Florida; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandson. The funeral will be held todayat 1:30 pm at the Hurd Funeral Home 10 Winter street, with the Reverend Adrien H Palardy, pastor of St Ignatius Church. Interment is to be in Oakdale Cemetery.

General Notes: She arrived in the United States in Newport, Vermont under the name of Marie Annette Clara Camire on September 1, 1905 on the Boston & Maine Railroad Company. She had been absent from the United States since that date, as follows: October 1928 returned within three or four days, entered Canada through Canaan, Vermont and returned through the Derby Line by automobile July 1922, stayed three weeks and entered Canada through Island Pond and back through Derby Line.

The place where she bought her ticket and boarded the train in Canada to come to America was in Nicolet, Quebec, Canada.

She paid $20.00 head tax in Portland, Cumberland, Maine on March 11, 1932.

She received a Declaration of Intention, number 724 on April 19, 1924 in Alfred, York, Maine, Supreme Judicial Court.

Mrs Clara A Bland, 76, widow of Frank C Bland, died Saturday at the Goodall Hospital. She resided at 15a Errol St. A native of Bayville, Quebec, she was born September 18, 1900, daughter of Edmond and Alphonsine Pelletier Camire, and came to Sanford in 1903 with her family. Mrs Bland was employed in the former Goodall-Sanford textile mills. She was a communicant of Holy Family Church. Her husband died in 1971. Surviving are two sons, Donald of Sanford and Raymond of Wells; three daughters, Mrs Gertrude Pepin of Sanford, Mrs Pauline Wilson of Oxen Hill, Maryland, and Mrs Beatrice Corley of San Diego, California; two sisters Mrs Alexina Libby and Mrs Melina Roussin, borh of Sanford; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Prayers are to be said at 9 am Wednesday at the Sanford Funeral Home, 145 Middle St. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10 am at Holy Family Church. Entombment is to be in Oakdale Cemetery.
