General Notes: The following is an excerpt of the inquest found in the Rochdale Observer 3 June, 1882 on page 7:

Shocking Death of Old Man. -- Mr. Molesworth held an inquest on 29th of May 1882 at the Green Man, Dearnley, on Monday, on the body of Thomas Sladen, 77 years of age, who died at the Dearnley Workhouse (now Birch Hill Hospital) on Sunday afternoon. -- From the evidence given it appeared that the deceased, whose son, Alfred Sladen, of Sladen Mill, Littleborough, is an engine tenter, was in the havit of making furniture paste, which he sold. On the 11th May he got permission from the wife of Michael Mullins, gardener, Durn, to place a mixture, apparently of turpentine and beeswax, in a jar on her fire. The jar had not been long on the fire when the contents got ablaze. Mrs. Mullins and her daughter were in the house at the time, and Mr. Eder Kershaw, rate collector, happened to call in directly afterwards. Mr. Kershaw noticed that the jar appeared to contain about two quarts of some mixture, and in reply to a question put by him Mrs. Mullins said that "Old Tom" was making furniture paste. He said that if they did not mind they would have the house on fire. Deceased seemed to be afraid to go near the jar, and asked what he must do. Kershaw told him to get something to put over the jar, and he got a damp rag and put over it. The flames were put out till the rag caught fire, and then the contents of the jar blazed up again. Deceased then got some more rags and tried to remove the jar from the fire. Kershaw turned to go, but heard a smash and a scream, and looking round the place semmed to be on fire. Deceased was lying down in a corner, and his clothes were burning. Kershaw raised him on to his feet and wrapped him round sol as to extinguish the flames, and then put out the fire in the house, the burning material having set the house on fire. Deceased's hands were very badly burned, and Dr. MacGill, who was called to attend the deceased at his own house, advised his removal to Dearnley, and he was taken there on the 18th of May. -- A verdict was returned that deceased died from the effects of burns accidently received.
