!From the "History of Jackson County, Indiana" 1886 JAMES McCORY, of Owens Township, is a native of Oneida County, N. Y., and was born June 24, 1808, being the third son of Clement and Abigail (Mudge) McCory. The parents were also natives of New York and were of Scotch-Irish and Dutch decent. They came to Clarke County, Ind., in 1818, and re- mained there the balance of their lives. Mahala Scott, a native of Kentucky , born June 27, 1810 became his wife January 7, 1830. The result of this unison is a family of nine children; only Elizabeth, Isabelle, Abigail and Louisa now living. Mr. McCory has been a citizen of Jackson County about fifty years, and is now one of its oldest and most respected men. He lives on the land he first bought from the Government and which he has cleared. When he first located here the wolves were yet so thick that sheep had to be penned up nights for protection. His early education was limited, but by much reading he has acquired a good general knowledge. He has led a life of temperance, having never been drunk nor used tobacco in any form. He has always been a Democrat and voted for Jackson at his first term, to whom he was formally introduced at the steamer "Triton," en route to New Orleans. Both Mr, and Mrs. McCory are prom- inent members of the Christian Church and have been such for several years. ------ This indenture witnesseth, that James McCory and Mahala McCory his wife of Jackson County in the State of Indiana,Convey and Warrant, to Elizabeth J. ! Eli Joseph McNamee, b. 1848: 1850 Census, Licking Twp., Jackson Co., Ohio, SLC# 444691, 21 August 1850: although Eli is reported as 4 years old, we believe this to be erroneous. A copy of a sheet of birth and death dates on Barnabas + his wife and their 13 children, hand-written by a descendant, seems quite reliable. We believe Eli was 2 yrs. 7 mos. old at the time of that Census. 24 June 1993. Grandson Walter Charles McNamee + his wife visited the Pomeroy Courthouse in an effort to locate the log cabin where Eli + Laura lived and had their family of nine children. Eli died in 1895 and Laura died in 1930. Their daughter Maggie, who never married, continued to live there alone until she died in 1952. At that time, the State of Ohio laid claim to assets due them, and the property was sold. Walt remembers visiting the log cabin as a child. He had, years earlier, tried to locate the property but failed. Asking at the Recorder's Office for the Index to 1952 Deeds of Purchase, an attorney, Doug Little, overheard the name McNamee and volunteered information. Meigs County Deed Book, Vol. 75, p.528: Douglas Putnam + wife to Eli J. McNamee. Know all men by these presents that I, Douglas Putnam, of Marietta in the County of Washington and State of Ohio, for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred Dollars to me paid before the delivery of these presents by Eli J. To Have and to Hold the above described and granted premises, with the appurtenances unto him the said Eli J. McNamee, his heirs and assigns forever. !COMMENT: Calista lived upstairs at the Coe residence in Springfield, MA. Carolyn (Clark Coe) Kolstad told HWB III that Laila (Phelon) Coe wearily climbed three flights of stairs to care for her shortly before she (Laila) died prematurely of angina. The spelling "Megarel" also occurs in family papers. "Megargel" is the spelling used in the hand of Laila P. Coe in her DAR application.spouse: >Phelon, Henry Dwight (1844 - 1905)!RESIDENCES: Of Fairfield, CT; finally, died in Springfield, MA.
!COMMENT: The following (enigmatic) note was sent by Carolyn Kolstad (in her hand): Finally went to the "loft" in the barn and found sealed carton I had forgotten about--Perhaps this will help you to become a member [of the DAR? Who?]: Giles lineOur line Joseph MegargelJoseph Megargel Allen"John" Isaac"Jesse" Giles"Calista" Minnie Keller Laila " Gaylord" Mary " Allen Megargel, from Philadelphia came to Sterling Pa, to the " Beechwood"-- His wife was Jane Marple, spoke of as being a wonderful house keeper. Their children were Isaac, Polly + Jane. Isaac married Calista E. Dayton who was born June 21, 1802, daughter of Giles Dayton Jr. and Lucy Mills-- Polly married Jonathan Richard, son from Philadelphia-- Please return the enclosed envelope from Bob [Robert Dexter Coe?] Coe when you have read it--for I can't get it copied--too long-- [NOTE: to the above a line was drawn from Isaac in the left column to Calista in the right column over which is written "married". This makes no sense since Calista Megargel married Henry Phelon, not Isaac Megargel; since it is stated plainly that Isaac married Calista E. Dayton, b. 21 Jun 1802, d/o Giles Dayton, Jr. and Lucy Mills. It appears that two different Calista's were confused (i.e., C. Dayton + C. Megargel). It appears that what is intended in the two columes above is to represent parallel generations diverging from Joseph Megargel through his sons, Allen and John. If this is the case then Jesse Megargel (father of Calista Megargel Phelon) was the son of John, the son of Joseph, extending the Megargel/Phelon line back another two generations from Jesse.spouse: >Dayton, Eliza Reynolds (1812 - )
