Some surnames connected to my SLATER branch:

HART
NAYLOR
ECKERSLEY
LAMB

My SLATER research all began with a small notebook in which my great-grandfather George SLATER recorded names and dates of his parents and siblings. My grandmother Agnes SLATER THOMPSON later added her information as did my mother. The notebook is now in my possession. Research has been greatly enhanced by the efforts of Pauline who lives in England. Pauline is a friend of my cousin Lea. Many thanks to Pauline!

George SLATER was born 14-Apr-1849 in Barton upon Irwell, Lancashire, England. His father was John SLATER and his mother was Elizabeth LAMB. John's father was William SLATER, mother unknown. Elizabeth's father was William LAMB, mother unknown. George married Alice ECKERSLEY 30-Sep-1871 in Bolton, Lancashire, England. Alice was the daughter of James ECKERSLEY and Ellen MARROW. She was born 15-Feb-1849 in Rumworth, Lancashire, England. George and Alice had nine children: Edmund born 07-Oct-1872; William Herbert born 14-Jun-1874 and died 03-Aug-1874; William born 16-Jul-1876 and died 10-Mar-1878; Mary Helen born 20-May-1878 and died 01-Aug-1878; Alice born 30-Jun-1883; George (my great-grandfather) born 17-Jan-1885 in Little Bolton, Lancashire, England; Ellen born 28-Nov-1885; Agnes born 16-Oct-1887; and James born 31-Dec-1889 (he may have been born in Warren County, Pennsylvania - that's what he put on his Form SS-5). George SLATER Sr. was an iron moulder (as was his son George). His wife Alice ECKERSLEY SLATER was a cotton weaver.

Alice ECKERSLEY SLATER died in 1890. The exact date and location are unknown. Youngest son James stated on his Form SS-5, Application for Social Security Number that he was born on 31-Dec-1889 in Warren, Pennsylvania. If that is correct then it would make sense that his mother died in Warren, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately Warren County says that records for that time period were destroyed in a fire so I am looking for other avenues to explore. George SLATER Sr. died 15-May-1900 location unknown.

George SLATER Jr. sailed from Liverpool, England, on  25-May-1909 on board the Caronia. He arrived at Ellis Island on 03-Jun-1909. He was going to Jamestown, New York.

Agnes HART sailed from Liverpool, England, on 23-Apr-1910 on board the Arabic. She arrived at Ellis Island on 02-May-1910. She was going to join George SLATER in Warren, Warren County, Pennsylvania.

George SLATER and Agnes V. HART were married 04-Jun-1910 in Warren, Warren County, Pennsylvania, at St. Joseph's. She was born 14-Feb-1884 in Hindley, Lancashire, England. Her parents were William HART and Catherine ARCHER. They had 3 children: Bertha Ellen born 13-Mar-1911 in Warren, Warren County, Pennsylvania; Bernard John born 26-Nov-1915 in Silver Creek, Chautauqua County, New York; and Agnes Gertrude (my grandmother) born 03-Nov-1917 in Silver Creek, Chautauqua County, New York. Bertha died 16-Nov-1922 in Oil City, Venango County, Pennsylvania, and is buried in St. Joseph Cemetery. Bernard was killed in action on 31-Jan-1944 at Anzio and is buried in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery, Nettuno, Italy. He was a corporal in the 751st Tank Battalion, C-company.

George and Agnes divorced sometime after the 1920 Census was taken. The family was enumerated in Silver Creek, Chautauqua County, New York. George eventually moved to California where he died 19-May-1962 in Fresno. He was buried 28-May-1962 at the Fresno County Cemetery, Fresno, Fresno County, California. On 26-Dec-1925 Agnes HART SLATER married James NAYLOR. James was born 26-Jan-1889 in Westhaughton, Lancashire, England. His parents were James NAYLOR and Martha Mary STOKES. James and Agnes were married in Shaker Heights, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They had one daughter Mary Alice. Her birth date as given on her Form SS-5 was 21-Nov-1924.

James NAYLOR departed Liverpool, England, on 23-Feb-1920 on board the Baltic. He arrived at Ellis Island on 07-Mar-1920. His destination was Amsterdam, Jefferson County, Ohio.

Agnes HART SLATER NAYLOR died 13-Oct-1954 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She was buried 16-Oct-1954 at Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmsted, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. James NAYLOR died 23-Mar-1962 in Bay Village, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He was buried 26-Mar-1962 at Sunset Memorial Park, North Olmsted, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
