355. Harvey A. Sackett Rev.-4251 (Ezra Davis , Benjamin , John , Richard , Jonathan , John , John ) was born in 1806. He died in 1879.

He was by religious faith a Congregationalist, studied divinity and was raduated from the theological school of Yale College in 1835. For fifteen years after graduation he labored as a preacher and pastor in central and western New York. He then, partly through the in fluence of his wife, who had been a teacher, became deeply interested in the higher education of women, and applied himself to the work of stimulating public interest on that subject. He earnestly advocated the erection and endowment of a college for women that should afford equal advantages to those so long provided for men, and devoted not a little of his time and energy to securing, by public and private subscriptions, funds for that purpose. He was in fact the pioneer in that class of effort, which in six years resulted in the building of Elmira College, the first institution of its kind. He also took an active interest, with his wife, in establishing the New York Medical College for Women, of which he was a trustee to the end of his life.

Harvey married Diantha E. Gray-4251sp daughter of John Gray and Diantha Burritt on 25 Jun 1839.

They had the following children:

  738 F i Eliza D. Sackett-7405.

of Garwood, Union Co., N. J.
739 M ii Burritt Sackett-7406 died in In infancy.

356. Fidelia Sackett-4252 (Ezra Davis , Benjamin , John , Richard , Jonathan , John , John ) was born in 1808. She died in 1891.

Fidelia married John Rees-4252sp on 5 May 1835 in Maple Hill, Mass.. John was born in 1805. He died before 1900.

of Dover Plains, Dutchess County, N. Y.

John and Fidelia had the following children:

  740 M i Dudley L. Rees-7407 was born on 30 Sep 1836.
        Dudley married Elizabeth E. Shufelt-7407sp.
  741 M ii Aaron H. Rees-7408 was born on 29 Dec 1838.

  743 M iv Isaac S. Rees-7410 was born on 10 Feb 1856. He died in Feb 1903.
        Isaac married Frances Stickles-7410sp.

362. Lucy L. Sackett-4260 (Calvin P. , Benjamin , John , Richard , Jonathan , John , John ) was born in 1816. She died on 31 Jan 1902.

Ed Young came to Clintonville [,WI.] in the year I did [1878]. He built the first house the Sacketts lived in. He had a family of children, pretty well grown. Our special interest in him began with learning that he was a half brother of Brigham Young. Father Sackett's youngest sister, Lucy, married a man by the name of Van Cott in New York State. Later they moved to Illinois and while there adopted the Mormon faith. They joined that famous trek from Nauvoo, Illinois to Salt Lake City in July 1846. Van Cott never subscribed to the polygamy part of Mormonism. Aunt Lucy remained his only wife, but Aunt Lucy's daughter [Mary] married Brigham Young, I believe she was his last and 16th wife - supposed to have been beautiful as a young woman and a talented musician. She had received training in Europe, Aunt Lucy was father's favorite sister and he kept in touch with her through the years. He had practically disowned her and she suffered grief and homesickness for years because of the estrangement. It was sometimes reflected in her letters. Maud and I, on a trip west by way of Salt Lake City, went to see Aunt Lucy. She was an elderly woman then and in her younger days must have been quite beautiful in her own right. We found her very serene and happy and surrounded by every comfort. She was pathetically happy that "Daniel's daughter" had come to see her.

Lucy married John Van Cott-4260sp son of Losee Van Cott and Lavinia Platt. John was born on 7 Sep 1814 in Canaan, Columbia County, N. Y.. He died in UT..

JOHN VAN COTT, 1814-1883, son of Losee Van Cott and his wife Lavinia Platt, and grandson of John Van Cott and his wife Jemima Titus.

JOHN VAN COTT, the elder, was born at Bushwick, Kings County, N. Y., about 1837 [probably 1737]. He was married to Jemima Titus and removed to the town of Washington, Dutchess County, N. Y. In the Revolution he was a pronounced patriot and saw active field service as a soldier in both the Second and Fifth Dutchess County regiments.

LOSEE VAN COTT, son of above, was born May 4, 1789, on his father's farm in the town of Washington, Dutchess County, N. Y.; married LAVINIA PLATT, and died on his farm in Columbia County, N. Y., June 29, 1824.

JOHN VAN COTT, only son of above, was born at Canaan, Columbia County, N. Y., Sept. 7, 1814. Some sixteen years after his marriage to Lucy L. Sackett he espoused the Mormon faith, and the same year (1847) sold his farm and all his belongings in Dutchess County, and with his faithful wife and their family of children, joined one of the pioneer bands that had resolved to migrate to Salt Lake City, Utah, which place they reached Sept. 15, of that year. In the course of a few years John Van Cott had taken to himself four additional wives, named respectively, Jemima, Caroline, Laura L. and Lena, who became the mothers of 22 of his sons and daughters. Several of these sons became men of prominence in the Mormon church and others in the professional and business life of Salt Lake City, while the daughters are said to have married "the best citizens of the state."

ROBERT TITUS, the colonist ancestor of Jemima Titus, the wife of John Van Cott the elder, was born at Stanstead Abby, in Herefortshire, England, in 1600. He came to New England in the ship. Hopewell, in 1635, and settled first at Weymouth, but in 1644 removed to Seacunk, and from there, in 1652, to Oyster Bay, N. Y.

EDWARD TITUS, 1630-1715, son of above, was married to MARTHA WASHBURN, daughter of WILLIAM WASHBURN, and resided at Westberry, L. I.

JOHN TITUS, 1672-17__, son of above Edward, was married, in 1695, to SARAH WILLIS, daughter of HENRY WILLIS and his wife MARY PEACE.

JACOB TITUS, 1703-17__, son of above John and Sarah Willis Titus, was married to MARGARET GORMAN.

TIMOTHY TITUS, 17__-1804, son of above Jacob and Margaret Gorman Titus, was married to CHARITY LOSEE, daughter of SIMON LOSEE, and they were the parents of Jemima Titus Van Cott.

"It was in 1874 that I met the Sacketts. As you've heard before, I saw Ella for the first time at a Methodist Church sociable. She was coming down the stairs and she wore a blue dress. I said to myself that same day I was going to ask her to marry me. In six months we were engaged and in Sept. 1876 we were married.

I made a down payment of six month’s rent on our first home. From that time on, we had fifty dollars a month to live on and it wasn't easy doing it."

Harriet M. Zillie Sackett

Wife of Rev. O. M. Sackett

MRS. O. M. SACKETT. Harriet M. Sackett was born in
Crawford County, Pa., Nov. 22, 1831. Her parents,
Martin and Rachel Zillie, were old time Methodists. She
was converted at the age of thirteen and united with
the church. She was married to the Rev. O. M.
Sackett, a Wesleyan Methodist preacher, Oct. 31,
1855. In 1868 he entered the Erie Conference of the
Methodist Episcopal Church and spent the rest of his
life in Clarion District, filling the following
appointments: Putneyville, Summerville, Clarion,
Callensburg, Salem and Shippenville. Following her
husband's death, Mrs. Sackett moved to Clarion,
where she lived for sixteen years: for the last thirteen
years she has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Luella
Elliott, the widow of the Rev. C. W. Elliott, of the
Cincinnati Conference. She died at Madison, N. J., Jan.
10, 1912. She was a woman of deep piety, earnest
and sincere in her religious profession, and influenced
many to a better life. She was broad and
comprehensive in all Christian work. In the church she
was an Evangel of moral and spiritual life; an uplifting
power in the Sunday School and prayer meeting and
in the two great branches of Christian work,
missionary and temperance, her power was ever
felt. She was alert on all questions which were vital
to Methodism, and kept herself well informed on all
these interests. She was a pain staking student of
God’s Word at all times, and her private devotions
were carefully observed. She was greatly loved by all
and her influence in the churches as a pastor's wife
was the purest and the most elevating. She never
spared herself in her devotion to duty. Among all
classes, and especially the young, she wrought for
Jesus Christ with a steady force which rarely failed of
success. Sorrows keen and many came into her life,
but she stood like a rock. Her two children survive
her—Mrs. Luella Elliott and Albert L. Sackett. She was
buried from the home of her old time friends, Mr. and
Mrs. W. B. Campbell, in Clarion, she having requested
this long before her death. The services were
conducted by the Rev. F. S. Neigh, assisted by the
Rev. D. A. Platt.
