Matthias Mauck1,2,3 (M)
b. circa 1751, d. 22 July 1802
Pop-up Pedigree

Mathias was born in Germany and emigrated to America with his parents. in the Revolutionary War 1775-1783 Virginia Regiment. NOTE: Provided by J.P. Mock : jpmock@@ix.netcom.com Mathias is identified as one of the sons of Frederick Mauck in Frederick Mauck Sr.'s Will dated 01 Mar 1779 (@@1). Mathias appears in the personal property tax lists of Frederick Co., Virginia from their inception in 1782, continuing yearly thru 1801. Mathias's personal property was appraised 02 Sep 1805 (@@2) and sold 13 Oct 1806 (@@3). His wife Catharine appears in the tax lists in 1802 and 1803. Mathias and Anna's children are listed in a lawsuit originally filed in June 1807 and recorded 06 Jan 1824 (@@4) as Mathias had died intestate. The lawsuit includes a hand drawn map showing how the property was divided and lists the as Frederick, Anthony, George, John, Jacob, Elizabeth, David and Polly, the last five being minors (under 21) as of June 1807. The lawsuit also indicates Anna remarried to Frederick Kyle. Catherine appears in Frederick Co., Virginia Court Minutes 02 Nov 1818 when Michael Mauck, Mathias's brother, is released as trustee for Catherine regarding the sale of 150 acres 27 Oct 1818. In a Frederick Co. Virginia deed (@@5) dated 06 Mar 1813 Catherine sold this land. In a second deed (@@6) dated 07 Oct 1818 the buyer is shown to have made all of the payments to Michael for Catherine. On 26 Jan 1848 Anna Kyle filed a pension claim with the Court of Common Pleas in Muskingum Co., Ohio. In the claim she related: Mathias was a Revolutionary War Veteran, served in the Virginia Militia, and was at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. She married Mathias at her father's house on what was called the Long Marsh in Frederick Co., Virginia (possibly Long Marsh Run in that part of Frederick Co. that today is Clarke Co.) about 1779, the minister being named Strite. Mathias died near Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia 22 Jul 1802 at about the age of 41 years old. She remarried Frederick Kyle, who died in Harden (likely Hardy) Co. in 1823, after which she moved to Muskingum Co., Ohio. Attached to her claim is a statement by her son Anthony verifying this information and adding that his wife's name was Sarah. Anna's pension application was denied as she could not provide proof of Mathias' Revolutionary War service. In the application she related Mathias was a private and served in the same unit as Christian and Henry Crumb, also privates. Mathias supposedly served several tours of duty and home sick from the last tour. Anthony (Anna's father), Christian and Henry Crumb appear beside each other in the Frederick Co., Virgini personal property tax list of 1782. The minister referred to by Anna was probably Christian Streit who performed the marriage of her son Anthony to Sarah. Streit was associated with the the Lutheran Church (@@7). The genealogy of The Crum Family by Judge Donald F. Lybarger of Cleveland, Ohio 1963 also identifies Anna's father as Anthony Crum, Jr. and provided his birth and death dates, along with his wife's name. This book corroborates Anna's statement regarding Henry and Christian Crum having served in the Revolutionary War under General George Washington and goes on to state that they served as chaplains. Christian was a minister with the Church of the Brethen and his brother Herny was a minister with the Methodist Church and founded the first Methodist Church in the area of Frederick Co. that would later become Clarke Co., Virginia in 1836. Assuming Catherine was over 17 years of age at the time of her marriage to Mathias she would likely have been born before 1761. Catherine's second marriage, to Frederick Kyle, is listed in the Frederick Co., Virginia Marriage register. The minister was James Walls, who was associated with the Methodist Church (@@8). Anna's father lists her as his daughter in his Will (@@9). The land of Henry Crum was located in what today is Clarke Co., Virginia, several miles northwest of Berryville (@@10). The land of Frederick Mauck and Motlena was located both south and west of Henry Crum. Michael Mauck1,2,3,4 (M)
b. circa 1765, d. 21 April 1830
Pop-up Pedigree

Two daughters, Barbara and Maria, are identified in their Frederick Co., Virginia marriage bonds. Neither is mentioned in Michael's Will. There has been speculation that Catherine Lenheart may have been yet another daughter of Michael but evidence supporting this has yet to be found. In the records of Muskingum Co., OH a Henry and Catherine Lenheart sold land to Alfred Bentley, husband of Mary "Polly" Mauk (daughter of Mathias Mauk, Michael's brother). It is not known if these two Lenheart families are related. Michael and Barbara sold the land on Chester St. in Front Royal 01 Jul 1882 to Jacob and Elizabeth Crizer, Jacob being the son of Barbara's brother brother Jacob. Michael also owned 154 acres on both sides of Back Creek in Frederick Co. Virginia which he purchased 28 Dec 1812, purchased 59 acres on a drain of Crooked Run in Frederick Co., VA dated 22 Nov 1821 which was sold by his executors 09 May 1832, sold land over the creek from Duvall's Spring 01 Apr 1813 inherited from his father Frederick, and sold 270 acres on Littler's Run 06 Apr 1813 originally received from his mother's second husband Jacob Stearly 04 Jan 1781. The land Michael received from his father was located in what today is Clarke Co., Virginia several miles west of Berryville. The land he received from Jacob Stearly is today located in Frederick Co., Virginia, several miles east of Stephenson. Additional land purchases are shown 04 Feb 1799 and 02 Jan 1804 but the deeds do not provide a description of the land. Michael's Will mentions land owned on Back Creek and Busch Creek in Frederick Co., Virginia. In a Frederick Co., Virginia deed dated 06 Mar 1832 Joseph Larrick and Solomon Harmon, executors for Michael Mauck, sold 174 acres on Busch Creek, a branch of Back Creek. This deed states Michael purchased this land 18 May 1824. In a Frederick Co., Virginia deed dated 18 May 1824 Michael purchased this land, which had been placed in his trust, after advertising it for sale in the Winchester Republican. In a Frederick Co., VA deed dated 04 April 1831 Joseph Larrick and Solomon Harmon, executors for Michael Mauck, sold 350 acres near Middleton "on the main road leading from Winchester to Staunton." Michael may also be the Michael Mauck that appears in the estate sale of George Mock 28 Oct 1808 in Frederick Co., VA. This George was married to Sophia and the family came to Frederick Co., Virginia from Pennsylvania in the mid 1770's. This family lived near Middleton, Frederick Co., Virginia. It has been speculated, but not proven, that Michael's father Frederick may have been a brother of this George. Michael was born at Frederick Co., Virginia, circa 1765. He was the son of Frederick Mauck and Mary Magdalena "Modlena" (?). Michael Mauck was tax roll in 1783 at Frederick Co., Virginia; Michael appears in the personal property tax lists of Frederick Co., Virginia yearly from 1783-1829. He married Barbara Cryzer at Frederick Co., Virginia, on 21 October 1788. Michael Mauck was census 1810 in 1810 at Frederick Co., Virginia; Michael is listed as head of household and being over 45 years old in the 1810 Frederick Co., Virginia census. He was census 1820 in 1820 at Frederick Co., Virginia; Michael is listed as the head of household in the 1820 Frederick Co., Virginia census. He sold land on 1 July 1822 at Shenandoah Co., Virginia. He left a will on 31 December 1829; Michael's Will was written 31 Dec 1829 and probated 03 May 1830. He lists his children as Michael, George (dec'd), Nancy Larrick (dec'd) wife of Joseph Larrick, Rebecca Barrow and her daughter Louisa Barrow, Jacob, Frederick, and Louisa Hammock wife of Samuel Hammock. Michael identifies Mary Bean, wife of William Bean, as a daughter of his late wife (by her first husband, and Michael's older brother Frederick) and his son George's children as James Henry, Abraham Peck, Robert and Michael George. Michael leaves money to Catherine Lenheart, wife of Jacob Lenheart and appoints Solomon Harman and Joseph Larrick as the executors of his Will.

Solomon Harman received a slave from Michael as a part of his wife's inheritance, however, Michael does not identify Solomon's wife. Solomon Harman married Evelina Harriet Mauck in Frederick Co., Virginia and the bond identifies her father as Michael Mauck. Michael died on 21 April 1830 at Middletown, Frederick Co., Virginia.
