Originally settled in Jamestown, VA. A newspaper clipping says "A branch of the family went to Alabama and settled at Greensborough. Another of the family moved from Virginia to Kentucky and Tennessee. There were two of the family at Yorktown, one of them killed there.

A profile of his g-grandson JDC Atkins syas "Gen. Atkins' great-grandfather John Atkins was a native born Welshman." [1059]
