William BARCLAY b. about 1812 in Tennessee; unmarried; died in 1846 of wounds suffered during the US-Mexican War. When he got to New Orleans, he was tired of overland travel, by foot trail and horse, and it was still another 350 miles of virgin forest to go through, mostly by footpath.  There, he made arrangements to board a ship in the harbour of New Orleans bound for Galveston, the major point of entry by water into Texas. He would work as a crewman on the ship in exchange for his passage. Before they got completely out of the harbour of New Orleans, the ship was captured by a regiment of Mexican soldiers.  The crew was arrested on the grounds of priracy, because the cargo was food stuff for the troubled Texas port where unrest had already started that would break into fighting the following month.  A Mexican military trial was held and all crew members, including William Barclay, were found guilty on Thursday and sentenced to be executed by firing squad the following Monday morning at daybreak. Knowing their fate, Sunday, the crew was able to smuggle out a statement by the chaplain, signed by them all, to their relatives to let them know what had become of them and to tell them that they had not been pirates and were not guilty.  The execution took place the following morning. The statement was published in the newpaper of New Orleans the following week. (From an out of print history book in the Shivers Library at Woodville, Texas submitted by Teddy Barclay Pope)

Note: John was sheriff of old Menard County (current Tyler County, Texas) formed in 1841 and appointed overseer of road building for Town Bluff in Tyler County in 1846.

James Walter BARCLAY, Sr. b. 11 Feb 1816 in Franklin Co., Tennessee; married Virginia
Ann America FOSTER, (1827-1867), daughter of William Lewis FOSTER and Jane LAWSON, 16 Apr 1841 in Woodville, Tyler Co., Texas. Died 13 Dec 1873. Friend to the Alabama and Coushatta Indians, James took in his nephew, Walter Anderson Barclay at the age of 10, son of Jeremiah Todd Barclay, shot dead on election day in 1850. W.A. Barclay founded town of Barclay, Texas.

Mary Louisa “Polly” BARCLAY b. 1818 in Limestone Co., Alabama; married (first) John T. HENDERSON; (second) James BEVINS, before 1850; died 31 Dec 1888 in Robertson Co., Texas

David Milton BARCLAY, b. 18 Oct 1820 in Limestone Co., Alabama; married Mary Jane ENLOE, daughter of Benjamin ENLOE and Sarah (?), 28 Jul 1842 in Tyler Co., Texas; died 2 Aug 1850 in Tyler Co., Texas (have handwritten letter from him to brother John McQueen Barclay dated 4 October 1852).

Jeremiah Todd BARCLAY b. 1 Jul 1826 in Limestone Co., Alabama; married Elizabeth Ann RIGSBY, (1833-1890) on 7 January 1849 in Tyler Co., Texas; daughter of Lewis RIGSBY and Mary Jane FOSTER; died 3 Aug 1850 in Tyler Co., Texas. Jerry had one son, Wm. Anderson Barclay, who was raised from age 10 by brother James. W.A. founded town of Barclay, Texas.

Milton BARCLAY b. 1829 in Lawrence, Limestone Co., Alabama; unmarried, died 1866 in Tyler Co., Texas

Note: Walter's travels took him from Rowan Co., North Carolina, to Madison Co., Kentucky (site of Boonesborough, established by Daniel BOONE, where deed records show he and his brother Robert sold Madison County land left them by their father. Here he married Elizabeth MCQUEEN (some accounts say that this was his second marriage and that he was 30 and she was 14 or 15) and shortly after the extended family moved to White Co., (now Franklin County) Tennessee, then in 1818 to Limestone Co., Alabama, where they are shown to be charter members of the Round Island Baptist Church. In about 1826 Walter, along with sons William and Anderson, traveled to the thicket of what would become the Republic of Texas. Anderson remained in Texas when Walter and James returned to Alabama for their families. They then returned to Texas.
