326. Robert1 Tucker;225 born 1604/5 at Milton-next-Gravesend, Kent, Eng;225 married Elizabeth Allen before 1639 at MA;225,61 died 11 Mar 1682 at Roxbury, MA; "age 78."225

He Debate as to the parentage of Robert Tucker. Tucker Genealogy of 1885 has the following (from "Kin of Milicene Smith"):

"1. William Tucker of Thornley in Devonshire. This direct connection has been proven in the following way: The report of the Visitation in County Kent for the years 1619-20-21, preserved in the Harleian Manuscripts, contain the early records of the Tucker family there and mentions several ancestors in direct line of the founders of the family in America. The information contained in those manuscripts was verified in 1908 by Deacon John A. Tucker of Milton, Mass., who visited Milton-next-Gravesend, where he had been given access to the Registry of Baptisms by the Rector of the ancient church of St. Peter and St. Paul. This Registry dates as far back as 1558 and in it were found the records of the baptism of his early ancestors, thus proving the Harleian Manuscripts to be absolutely correct. William Tucker married Josea or Isota Ashe, daughter of William Ashe, of Devonshire. (See Ashe family.) They had sons George, Thomas and John.

2. George Tucker, eldest son, married Maria Hunter, daughter and heir of John Hunter of Gaunte. This George Tucker was a man of note in Milton-next-Gravesend, the ancient place where in 1572 Queen Elizabeth conveyed the manor on him. They had five sons: George, Nicholas, Tobias, Mansfield and Daniel.

3. George Tucker, eldest son, resided in or near Milton-next-Gravesend in County Kent. His father, George, was mentioned in 1572 in a list of the 12 principal inhabitants of Milton-next-Gravesend, and he was third in importance in his city. This George was born about 1580 and married Mary Darrell, daughter of John Darrell of Calehill Esquire. (See Darrell line.) (He had married as his first wife Elizabeth, daughter of Francis Stoughton, and had one son, George, his heir.) By his second wife, Mary Darrell, he had John, Elizabeth, Maria, Robert, Henry, Sara, Hester, Anna and Martha. The sons George, John and Robert left England in 1636 and went to Bermuda where a relative of theirs, Capt. Daniel Tucker (most likely the Daniel their father's brother mentioned above), had been commissioned Governor February 15, 1615. George Tucker, the son by the first wife, being his father's heir to the estate in Tavistock in Devon, returned to England after the troubles there had been settled. John and Robert came to Massachusetts. Soon after this the Tucker family disappeared from Kent County and no further trace of it is found in the records of Milton-next-Gravesend, confirming the generally accepted tradition that about this time the younger generation emigrated to America.

4. Robert Tucker, third son and fifth child of George Tucker, came to Massachusetts and settled first at Weymouth. He was, according to the Visitation of Kent in 1619, aged 14 at that time, thus born 1604/5. He died in Roxbury, Massachusetts, March 11, 1682, aged 78. These dates help to prove that he was really the Robert mentioned in Visitation of Kent. He came to Massachusetts with Rev. Hull and after a short time at Weymouth moved to Gloucester, where he held office of Recorder and where it is probable some of his children were born. He was Town Clerk and Deputy to the General Court. He married Elizabeth Allen, probably a sister of Deacon Henry Allen of Boston. "

However, this was refuted in 1922 with the following (From "Bacon & Allied Families"):

"See "Tucker-Darrell" by Rufus Stickney Tucker, Ph.D., Cambridge, Mass., vol. 76, p. 232,N.E.H.&G.Reg. for refutation of ancestry of JOHN TUCKER of Hingham, as set forth in "The Genealogy ofthe Tucker Family" by Ephraim Tucker (1895) including:

"Wills prove that John and Robert Tucker, sons of George Tucker of Milton next Gravesend, co. Kent, were living in England after their namesakes appear in Massachusetts--John being in England in 1639,1642, and 1644, and his brother Robert being there in 1639, when according to the will of his half bro.George, he was evidently incapable of managing his own affairs. The English ancestry of these twosettlers of Mass. has yet to be discovered." (1922)."225,226 He "Robert Tucker, third son and fifth child of George Tucker, came to Massachusetts and settled first at Weymouth. He was, according to the Visitation of Kent in 1619, aged 14 at that time, thus born 1604/5. He died in Roxbury, Massachusetts, March 11, 1682, aged 78.
