More New Jersey Southards

This page contains any stray references to Southards that I might find while researching the family from Batsto. Let me know if there's anything you can add to this please; just take a moment to e-mail me.

The abbreviation "NJC" in the source column on this page and elsewhere on this site stands for the local newspaper in Ocean County in the 19th century, the New Jersey Courier. The "Russel Conover Collection" is a collection of genealogical miscellany on file with the Ocean County Historical Society, and I can not vouch for it's accuracy, although I have found several bits of information there that were later corroborated by other sources. All I'm saying is to be careful and don't use it as your primary source.

I received the following from a fellow Southard researcher, Maureen. She would appreciate any info you have; you can e-mail her by clicking her name.

William Hatfield KNAPP m.#1 Mary A. SOUTHARD 10 Dec. 1884 in Newark, Essex, NJ
Mary was the daughter of:
Lewis SOUTHARD & Mary DRUMGOULD, m. 18 July 1864 Newark, Essex, NJ
Lewis (Louis) was the son of John & Unity JOHN;he was 25 at this time.(According to his marriage certificate).

No Lewis SOUTHARD b. NJ, appears on the Essex County 1860 Census There is no record of either Lewis or Mary on the 1870 Census However, Mary is listed as living with her grandparents -
DRUMGOOLD, Peter, 55, Paten Leather Factory
Bridget, 55, Housekeeper
Michael, 16, gardener
SOUTHARD, Mary A., 05

It is my belief that this Lewis and the Lewis who married Abigail JOHN in Plumstead 1866 are one in the same person.

I received the following from Sharon of Egg Harbor, NJ Lewis Southard (b. 1839)married Abigail John 1 Apr. 1866 Plumstead Twp. N.J. Died 20 March 1913 Ocean Co.

This bit of Southard genealogy was sent to me by another researcher, Melinda, whose aid with this site has been invaluable over the last few months.

John Southard was born in 1801, died Mar 8, 1861 in Jackson Twp, N.J. He is supposed to have married Unity Lenning although Melinda has said she woud dispute that until proven. UPDATE:A researcher has proven that John did NOT Unity Lennings. The death certificate Martha L. Harris States that her father was John Southard and Her Mother was Nancy JOHNS. (I asked this researcher for a copy of the certificate but she has not sent it).

Their children were:

I have a Martha Southard as the second wife of a great uncle, Joseph Woodruff Henderson. He was born Nov. 7, 1839 Bridgeton, NJ and died March 20, 1918. His first wife, Ruth Dunham, died August 28, 1886, so I assume he remarried a few years after that. It is possible that Martha was a widow, I don't know. If any of this is familiar, Carol would appreciate an e-mail.

The family of David Southard of Batsto is known to have relocated to the Lakewood area by the 1920s or earlier. I have found a David Southard as early as 1885 in Brick township, but I am not sure if they are related. This David lived with Eva (under 20 years old), Adeline (who was under 5), and another Adeline (between 20-60 years old.)

Wanda J. Ax___Bledsaw, descendant of Elisabeth Southard who Married John Valance in L.I. New York in 1782 and also, descendant of Job Southard and Morning F. Snow. If you know about this family, contact myself or this researcher.
