The Brennan and Acker Family Connection

Brennan: The Acker Connection

by Robert F. Delaney

November 2009

For many years I gathered information about our Acker lineage from my father, Franklyn Lowery Delaney, and a part of that story involved one of his granduncles, Smith Acker. Smith Acker married Alice Augusta "Gussie" Brennan, which created the connection between some of my distant relatives and the Brennan lineage presented here. As a Delaney, my own connection to the Brennan line is quite remote, but nevertheless very interesting to document because of my interest in all facets of the family history, including allied family lines. My grandmother, Edwina Acker (Lowery) Delaney, provides the connection to the Acker line. Her mother, Mary Ellen Acker, had 10 siblings, including a brother named Smith Acker, who is my great-granduncle. Thus, in a very indirect way, I have a connection to this line of Brennans from the marriage of Gussie Brennan to Smith Acker.

Although Smith was documented in some of the Acker family research material preserved by my father, details about him and his family were somewhat sparse. Early in my family history research I discovered some marriage information as well as basic census data. Despite those initial successes, I found it difficult to make much headway on this part of the larger story. In recent months, however, I have come across new information about the Brennans and will be developing the picture not only here but also within the Acker portion of this site.

As stories are added about members of the Brennan clan, the appropriate links in the table below will be activated. When stories, documents, pictures and other items are made available on this site, I note them on my "What's New?" page for readers who wish to keep up with new information as it becomes available. Also, photographs - individual and group - can be accessed via the Photograph Index.

For readers who have come to this site to find a specific person, the table below may be utilized in order to jump to that individual and related family members.

Index to Brennan Families & Allied Lines

Marriage of female members of a Brennan-surnamed family results, of course, in a branching and continuation of the line through the allied surnames. Readers interested pursuing the Brennan lineage through the allied lines can do so via the links in the "Allied Line" column or the "Children" column of this table. Although I have compiled a information on many of the individuals, most of the stories remain to be written and will be posted in the future, at which time the relevant links will be activated. Allied surname stories and information can also be reached from the Surnames Index.
