Mary Scott was born circa 1814 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. She married William (McBirney) (McBurney) McBirnie, son of James (McBurnie) McBirnie and Ann/Agnes? Campbell, on 20 August 1848 at Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.1 As of 20 August 1848,her married name was McBirnie. Mary Scott and William (McBirney) (McBurney) McBirnie appeared on the census of 31 March 1851 at Blair Tilework, Parish of Beath, Fife, Scotland.2 Mary Scott appeared on the census of 31 March 1851 at Blair Tilework, Beath, Fife, Scotland.3 She and William (McBirney) (McBurney) McBirnie appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Dalry, Ayr, Scotland.4 Mary Scott and William (McBirney) (McBurney) McBirnie appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at Civil Parish [or Township] of Upholland, Lancashire, England.5 Mary Scott and William (McBirney) (McBurney) McBirnie appeared on the census of 4 April 1881 at 9 Carmethie [Carnethie?] Street, Lasswade, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.6 Mary Scott died.
The Mary listed as the wife of William McBirnie in the 1841 Census of Gartsherrie was born in Lanark. The Mary listed as the wife of William McBirnie in the 1851 census of Beath was born in Edinburgh (Mid-Lothian). It is possible that the 1841 and 1851 census records are for two different families but in the 1851 census, one of the children, Agnes, was listed has having been born in Gartsherrie around 1842. The only William McBirnie found in the 1841 census in Gartsherrie had a five year old son named Alexander and was listed with an occupation of Fire Brickmaker. The William McBirney listed in the 1851 Beath, Fife census was a Brickmaker by occupation and a sixteen year old (based on the age given in the 1855 birth record of his daughter, Mary) Alexander McBirnie was married to Sophia McNeilly nearby in Dunfermline, Fife in October of 1851. This was the same place where William McBirnie, Brick Maker, married Mary Scott in 1848. So, I am assuming that the 1841 and 1851 census listings were for the same family and that Mary Scott was William McBirnie's second (or possibly third) wife.
