GEORGE WRIGHT SWAINSTON

George W. Swainston, a long time Reno attorney, died on January 29, 2007 at Renown South Meadows Medical Center with family members at his bedside. George, born July 17,1936 at Rexburg, Idaho, was the first child of George D. and Dorothy Wright Swainston. He was the fifth in a succession of Georges' in a family that emigrated from England in the 1870's and settled near Whitney, ID. George's father was a career forest ranger. After George's brother, Harry, was born; the family lived in a small cabin in Bryce Canyon near Panguitch, UT. George's mother remembered cougar tracks in the snow when his father was gone and water had to be carried from a nearby spring. Job assignments moved the family to Grand Junction, CO, Salt Lake City, UT, Ketchum and Hailey, ID and eventually Smith Valley, NV during which time a sister, Alice, and another brother, John were added to the family. In Smith Valley, George attended school from the fourth grade through high school. He graduated from Smith Valley High School in 1954. George received a Bachelor of Sciences degree in 1960 from the University of Utah. He worked as a truck driver and then as an insurance adjuster to fund his next dream. He fulfilled that life long ambition when he graduated from the University of Denver Law School in 1967. Having passed the bar exam in Nevada before graduation, he began practice as an attorney with the law firm of Richard P. Wait. After five years with the firm and two years in solo private practice, he joined Roger Erickson and Don Thorpe in a partnership practice in 1974, which lasted three decades. George established a successful mediation and arbitration practice following his retirement from active trial practice, which lasted until his final illness. While attending law school, George met Diane Annette DeLue. They were married in Denver, CO on January 27, 1968 and established a residence in Reno. They bought a home on Idlewild Drive on the Truckee River, where their two children, Shauna Leigh and George Gerald were raised. Life as a trial attorney with two young children was not always easy, and sometimes comic, but George was proud of his family. George was dedicated and loving to not just his wife and children, but also devoted to his siblings and parents. The frequent family gatherings were the joy of his life. The recent birth of his grandson Tommi James brought joy and laughter to his final months. Diane predeceased George in 1998. George continued to live at the family home with his two beloved, very old dogs, Yodi and Dini. George often visited with dear friends and family. He could always be counted on for a good meal and good conversation. His presence in the lives of colleagues and family will be greatly missed. Following George's passing Gary Cardinal a member of George's law firm, Erickson, Thorpe & Swainston, Ltd., eloquently articulated George's influence: ?For those of you who are newer to the firm and may not have had the opportunity to get to know George as well, you should know what a great person he was. He prided himself on his mastery of the law and on his ethics. He was the walking law library, able to throw out case names and rules for any given issue. While some may have thought him to be a bit intimidating, he was, in truth, a very gentle soul. The world is a better place because of George's kindness and compassion, and it will continue to be a better place because of the inspiration George has given us to emulate his many fine qualities, his goodness and his decency.? George was a member of the Washoe County and American Bar Associations, the State Bar of Nevada and the American Board of Trial Advocates, the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Defense Research Institute, the California Association of Defense Council, the Association of Defense Counsel of Nevada, the American Judicature Society, and the American Arbitration Association. George is survived by his two children Shauna (Daniel) Haipola, of Reno, and George G. Swainston, of Reno; two brothers, Harry W. (Annette) Swainston, of Carson City, and John W. Swainston of Smith Valley; a sister Alice Jeanette (Calvin) Wiggins of Reno; a grandchild, Tommi James Haipola; numerous nieces and nephews and their children. A private graveside service will be held in Smith Valley, Nevada. A memorial service will be held at 10 a. m. at the California Building at Idlewild Park, 1000 Whitmore Lane, Reno, NV on Monday, February 5, 2007.
