Alfred Edgerton, son of Dan and Mindwell (Lane) Edgerton.
Roxanna Law, daughter of Jeremiah and Hepzibah (Leach) Law.

Alfred Edgerton was born at Monson, Massachusetts
on February 20, 1820, the son of Dan and Mindwell
(Lane) Edgerton. He had a twin brother
named Almon.
Circa 1825 – 1830, Alfred’s parents removed to Vernon, Connecticut,
where his father died in June of 1830.
At the time of the 1830 Federal Census, Alfred was included in the
household of his elder brother, Edwin, in Vernon, Connecticut. Alfred’s parents may have resided for a
time in Ashford, Connecticut, which Alfred reported as his birthplace in the
1850 Federal Census (see below). As a young man, Alfred removed to Worcester
County, Massachusetts. He was married
in the town of Holden on February 5, 1842 to Roxanna Law, daughter of
Jeremiah and Hepzibah (Leach) Law of Killingly,
Connecticut. Roxanna was born at
Killingly on October 22, 1823. Alfred
and Roxana Edgerton had two children:
Jane Elizabeth, born in Sterling, Massachusetts on September 19, 1845;
and George A., born in Killingly, Connecticut in November 1847. At the time of the 1850
Federal Census, the family was residing in Killingly, Connecticut in the household
of Alfred’s father-in-law, Jeremiah Law (pg. 345; dwelling #351; family #394;
enum. September 11, 1850). In an unusual exception to the rule, the
enumerator of this census recorded not only the state of each person’s birth,
but also the township. The entire
household was enumerated as follows:
Alfred Edgerton later removed to Hampden County,
Massachusetts, residing first in West Springfield and later Springfield City. The household of Alfred Edgerton was recorded in

The household of Alfred Edgerton was recorded in
the 1870 Federal Census
of West
Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts (pg. 42; dwelling #300; family
#368; enum. August 27, 1870), as follows:
The family of Daniel and Sarah Melcher was
enumerated in the same household. Alfred’s
twin brother, Almon, was residing nearby in West
Springfield; his household was enumerated a few houses later on the same page
of the census roll. At the time of the 1880
Federal Census, the family was residing in the city of Springfield. The enumeration of Alfred Edgerton’s
household (dwelling #101; family #107; enum. June
5, 1880), was as follows:
Mrs. Roxana (Law) Edgerton died at Springfield,
Massachusetts on February 22, 1895; and Alfred died four years later on
December 7, 1899, also in Springfield.
Both were buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Springfield, where their
headstones were inscribed with the complete dates of their respective births
and deaths. Alfred and Roxana’s son,
George A., resided for most of his adult life in Chicopee. He was married to Harriet A. Johnson and
died at Chicopee in 1902. The
daughter, Jane Elizabeth, was married to William I. Rice and resided in the
