Augustus Huntington Edgerton was born August 3, 1860 at Delhi, New York, the only son of Charles A. and Mary T. (Smith) Edgerton.  Augustus was raised in Delhi and resided there for much of his adult life.  He made his living as a farmer and laborer.

 

At the time of the 1880 Federal Census, Augustus was recorded as a servant in the household of Peter Frazier in Delhi, Delaware County, New York (dwelling #132; family #135; enum. June 15-16, 1880).  He was enumerated as “Augustus H. Edgerton, aged 20, b. in New York, works on farm”.

 

Augustus H. Edgerton was married on April 13, 1896 at Delhi, New York to Minnie Elizabeth Wannamacher, with whom he had five daughters – Mary Kathryn, who died at the aged of eleven years; Estella Elizabeth, who married Harold Francis Clark; Lena Belle, who married Ralph Scott Clark; Alice, who died one day old; and Margaret Louise, who married Oscar Emil Ruff.

According to the above census record, Minnie was the mother of two children, both of whom were still living.  Augustus’ occupation was listed as “farmer”.

Augustus Huntington Edgerton died at Hamden, New York on May 20, 1931.  A copy of his death certificate was filed with the New York State Department of Health (year 1931, certificate #31414).  Augustus was buried at Woodland Cemetery in the village of Delhi, New York, in the same plot were his parents were previously buried.  A family monument there bears the following inscription:  “AUGUSTUS H. / EDGERTON / 1860 – 1931 / MINNIE E. / WANNAMACHER / HIS WIFE / 1873 – 1963”  (Two smaller headstones bear identical dates.)  On two of the other sides of this family monument are inscriptions for Augustus’ parents, Charles and Mary, and for Augustus and Minnie’s two daughters who died in infancy.  Augustus’ sister, Cora (Edgerton) Shaw, Cora’s husband, Daniel W. Shaw, and one of her sons, Augustus H. Shaw, were also buried in the family plot.
