Thomas Gilliland married Ann ?2 (Some background information: In 1758, the District of Augusta became the Parish of St. Paul, the northern frontier of the Royal Province of Georgia. In 1777, shortly after the start of the Revolutionary War, St. Paul Parish became Richmond County. For a more complete explanation of the Royal Charter of June 1732 establishing the Colony of Georgia, see the Introduction to the book English Crown Grants in St. Paul Parish in Georgia 1755-1775 by Marion R. Hemperley which is available online through FamilySearch.org.)

At a Council held in the Council Chamber at Savannah on November 1, 1757, a petition of Thomas' was read setting forth that he was a "Settler in this Province having a family consisting of a wife and three children and was desirous of obtaining a grant of lands for cultivation and praying for two hundred acres of land situate on Savannah River at the mouth of little Cyoka Creek [Kiokee Creek] on the lower side thereof about fifteen miles below [sic] Augusta, which if granted the petitioner promised to cultivate and improve the same. Resolved— that on condition only that the petitioner doth take out a grant for the said land within seven months from this date and that he doth also register the said grant in the Register's Office of this Province within six months from the date thereof that his Majesty may not be defrauded of his Quit Rents. Then the prayer of the said petition is granted."3

On October 2, 1759, an English Crown Grant was issued to Thomas for 150 acres in St. Paul Parish, Georgia (Province), bounded on the north by the Savannah River, and on the west by Cyoka Creek [Kiokee Creek] and Thomas Lloyd.4

At a Council held in the Council Chamber at Savannah on March 7, 1769, a petition was read from Thomas Gilliland setting forth that he was "settled in the Province and had one hundred and fifty acres of land granted him and was desirous to obtain land for cultivating having a wife and four children. Therefore, praying for two hundred acres on Germany's Creek [present day McDuffie County], St. Paul's Parish, about half a mile above land settled by one Jernagan." On October 3, 1769, at a Council at Savannah, a grant, signed by the Governor, was issued for those acres.5,6

Wilkes County, Georgia, was created in 1777 from St. Paul Parish and Thomas appeared in the early records of that county recorded in the books Early Records of Georgia: Wilkes Georgia, Volumes 1 & 2, compiled by Grace Gillam Davidson and first published in 1933 (records below). However, a search of the Index to Deeds, Books 1, 2, and 3 for Wilkes County (FHL film #0163600 and #0163601) which covered the years 1785-1903, revealed only two instances for the surname Gilliland. One was in 1891 and the other was the guardian papers for Bridget and Mary Gilliland, Thomas' granddaughters. As far as I can surmise, Thomas went from residing in St. Paul Parish to Wilkes County (when it was created in 1777) to Washington County (when it was created in 1784) to Hancock County (where he was probably living when he died).

In 1784, Thomas, by his son William, requested that a warrant be issued to him for 287½ acres in Washington County, Georgia. That warrant was granted on April 16, 1784. On May 17th, the surveyor for Washington County, Joseph Pannill, was authorized to survey that tract of land.

Also, on March 25th, as per an Act and Resolve of the General Assembly, passed at Augusta on August 20, 1781, Thomas was entitled to 250 acres for his service in the Revolutionary War.9

Thomas Gilliland died before 12 December 1793.2

On December 12, 1793, Ann Gilliland, Thomas' widow, as executrix of his estate, sold 77 acres of land in Greene County, Georgia, to Matthew Hawkins for £50. The land was located on the waters of Sandy Run Creek, bounded on the west by William Gilliland's land and on the south by other land of Thomas'.2

Because of this deed, we know that Thomas had made out a Last Will & Testament, most likely in Washington County. However, the Washington County courthouse was destroyed in 1855 and all deeds and probate records were lost.

Thomas Gilliland was born circa 1792 at Georgia.1 He married Malinda Ponder on 10 October 1816 at Jasper County, Georgia.2,1 Thomas Gilliland appeared on the 1840 Federal Census of Randolph County, Alabama, with a household listed as one male under 5, one male 5-9, one male 15-19, two males 20-29, one male 40-49, two females under 5, one female 5-9, two females 10-14, one female 15-19, and one female 30-39 with two persons engaged in agriculture.3 He and Malinda Ponder appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Marion County, Alabama, enumerated 31 December 1850. Their children Mary Ann, Silas M., Louisa, George W., Melinda, Elizabeth, Lewis, Sarah, Mariam and William G. were listed as living with them.1 Thomas Gilliland and Malinda Ponder appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Marion County, Alabama, enumerated 23 June 1860. Their children Elizabeth, Sarah, Mariam and William G. were listed as living with them.4
Some people believe that this Thomas Gilliland was the son of William Gilliland Sr. and Susan Grantham. However, so far my research has shown this not to be the case (though I may find new evidence that will change my mind).

In William's Revolutionary War pension file, in a paper dated March 30, 1860, it states that the only [surviving] child of William and Susan was Thomas Gilliland of Randolph County, Alabama. The Thomas Gilliland that married Malinda Ponder had been living in Marion County, Alabama at the time of the 1850 Federal Census and was also living there in June 1860. There was a Thomas Gilliland that was living in Randolph County in 1860 but he was the one who was married to Emeline (surname unknown).

Additional evidence:

Land records in Fayette County, Georgia were researched. While the Thomas Gilliland who married Malinda Ponder had been living in Alabama since the 1840 census (Randolph County in 1840 and Marion County in 1850 and 1860), there was a Thomas Gilliland living in Fayette County, Georgia until at least August 3, 1846 when he sold 50 acres of land situated in the northeast corner of lot #198 in the 19th District (originally Henry but now Fayette County) to Major Kite. A total of 8 deeds were found for Thomas Gilliland in Fayette County dating from 1830 until 1846.

In the 1850 Federal Census for Randolph County, Alabama, Susan Gilliland, age 70, was living with Thomas and Emeline Gilliland.

There is also another letter attached to William's pension file, dated January 17, 1860, from Thomas Gilliland who referrs to Susan Gilliland as "my mother". This Thomas was living in Tallapoosa County, Alabama at the time. Tallapoosa County is on the east side of Alabama, next to Randolph County, and across the state from Marion County where the Thomas Gilliland who married Malinda Ponder was living in 1860.
