Funeral services were held on Saturday at the Presbyterian church for Harry Douglas Wells, a Del Norte citizen for 60 years.
He was born in Collinsville, Texas August 17, 1880, the son of Frances Plunkett and William Oliver Wells. With his parents and older brother, the family moved to Camden, Illinois where he grew up and to Del Norte in 1900.
He and Miss Pearl O’Neil were married April 7, 1907 and were the parents of six children, five of whom survive. Mrs. Wells died in January of 1942.
During many years in Del Norte, Harry’s occupations were varied. He was employed by Adam Weiss and Asa Middaugh, early merchants, several years was associated with Dan O’Neil in the livery business and carried the mail many years—first by horse and buggy to Saguache and later the La Garita Star. He was a fieldman for Hartner produce and was associated with claim holders in the Embargo and Beidel districts. He was county under-sheriff from 1943 to 1955 before retiring. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.
His wife, an infant son, parents and three brothers, Clarence, Wilbur, and Bud, preceded him in death. He is survived by a son, Doug, Denver; four daughters, Irene Hyde, Grand Junction; Nova of Denver; Eula Speights; and Verna Zeiler, Del Norte; six grandchildren, a sister and brother, Lena Jordan and Roy Wells, both of Del Norte.
Harry was a colorful man, having many friends from all walks of life. He was an unofficial greeter to strangers at his livery barn, and later, always friendly, never forgetting a friend, dearly loving a political campaign and friend of old and young.
Pallbearers were Loyd, Norris, and Larry Martz, Larry Wright, Sam Seymour, and Rex Jackson.
