  Launched in 1935 by brothers Preston A. Wells and John Wells as the Coast Guard Development Company, the Las Olas Company was originally established to acquire and rent beach and ocean front cottages in Fort Lauderdale. The brothers soon determined that a hotel would be a great business opportunity and in 1936 built the Hotel Champ Carr on Las Olas. The property was renamed the Riverside Hotel in 1947, which the Las Olas Company still owns and manages today. With the budding growth of the economy and tourism in Fort Lauderdale after WWII, Las Olas Boulevard saw a major expansion of retail stores in the late 40s and early 50s, making it a significant shopping district. Economic prosperity brought continuous growth and more people to Las Olas throughout the next three decades.   Originally from Chicago, the Wells family began traveling to Fort Lauderdale in
  the 1930s. Preston A. Wells and his wife Lonie stayed at the Broward Hotel located on
  Andrews Avenue. Preston owned a fishing boat named the “Kingfisher” and his brother
  John Wells would accompany him during fishing trips. The brothers had made their
  fortune in Chicago real estate, Nebraska cattle and by investing in Quaker Oats.
  Preston liked to fish and hired Captain Merritt as a guide. Frequent excursions
  on the ‘Kingfisher’ helped Preston meet Champ Carr. Champ married Captain Merritt’s
  daughter and helped as a mate on Preston’s fishing boat.
  Champ was a very agreeable guy and after Preston built his house at 505 Mola
  in 1931. Back then, it was the only house in the area and Champ helped by keeping an
  eye on Preston, Jr. and his brother Teddy, in addition to his job at a fruit packing
  company and part-time mate. Preston then bought a 30’ sailboat, which he kept at 505
  Mola and Champ was, once again, called upon to help.
  Around 1933, Preston bought a rooming house, where Big City Tavern now sits,
  and asked Champ if he would be interested in painting and repairing the building.
  Champ was up to the task, and after the place was refurbished, Champ ran it for a
  couple of years and turned a profit.
  History of the Riverside Hotel
  In 1935, the Wells brothers determined that a hotel would be a great business,
  and plans were laid to build a three-story 80-room hotel “with baths” across the street
  from the rooming house. Preston was impressed by the acumen displayed by Champ
  and asked if he would manage the new hotel. Champ accepted and on December 12,
  1936, the Wells honored its newly appointed general manager by naming the hotel,
  Hotel Champ Carr.
  In 1947, Champ Carr stepped down as manager and the brothers renamed it the
  Riverside Hotel. They also appointed George W. Anderson as the hotel’s second
  general manager. With a European ambience and Mediterranean style, the Riverside
  Hotel was built with terra cotta tile floors, three fireplaces, lush tropical gardens and
  landscaping.
  Among early and well-heeled guests at the hotel was a member of the famous
  DuPont family and in later years a Californian named Ronald Reagan and Edgar A.
  Guest, the famous Detroit newspaper poet of the time. The first season of the hotel
  proved so successful that an addition was constructed in 1937, a six-story wing that
  increased the number of rooms to 125.
  In the years that followed, the hotel was the site of the city’s important civic and
  social events. Celebrities and well-known politicians passed regularly through the doors
  of the inviting hotel, enjoying its personalized service and old Florida charm.
  Riverside’s $25 million Expansion
  In 2002, the hotel opened its new Executive Tower, a $25 million expansion and
  renovation project expanding the Riverside Hotel’s meeting and banquet facilities to
  more than 11,000 square feet and doubled its capacity to 206 guest rooms and 11
  suites.
  The Executive Tower boasts 112 tasteful new rooms and four luxurious new
  penthouse executive suites. The eighth floor boasts state-of-the-art banquet and
  meeting rooms offering guests and meeting planners over 7,400 square feet of space
  with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, Las Olas, New River and the impressive
  Fort Lauderdale skyline.
  Two of the largest meeting rooms are Himmarshee Room and New River room
  which are 2,800-square-feet each. Together, they can accommodate large events or
  can be subdivided by air walls, creating a total of 10 rooms for simultaneous meetings
  and events. The hotel’s newly remodeled kitchen, which prepares the unique gourmet
  dishes served at its Four-Diamond Grill Room, Indigo restaurant, and Brio
  Mediterranean Bistro prepare the exceptional menus for banquets and receptions.
  The Merritt Board Room is 900 square feet and perfect for board meetings or
  breakfast, lunch or dinner meetings for up to 60 people. The Abeona Conference Room
  is ideal for more intimate meetings or meals for up to 25 people.
  The penthouse executive suites and luxury rooms are on the ninth through
  twelfth floors, all with magnificent views and many with spacious balconies. The suites
  maintain the Riverside’s time-honored charm, but the accommodations are ultramodern
  with multi-line speakerphones, data ports and the latest in video entertainment.
  The Riverside Hotel also has a spacious pool and deck area across the street
  from the hotel for privacy. The pool area is located alongside the New River. Hotel
  guests can bask in the sun as they admire the endless parade of yachts and pleasure
  boats Fort Lauderdale is famous for. There is also the romantic Ceremonial Ring plaza
  alongside the river, which can be reserved for weddings, anniversaries or corporate
  functions.
  Riverside Updates ‘Classic’ Rooms
  In February 2005, the Riverside Hotel completed a $2 million update to its
  “Classic” rooms. The hotel’s 81 ‘Classic’ rooms received the perfect blend of ‘Old
  Florida’ charm with modern conveniences and comforts. The general theme was
  casually romantic and alluring the very qualities of paradise and the inspiration behind
  the design of the Tommy Bahama furniture used throughout. The furniture is crafted in
  solid maple with a lush antique finish adding a touch of spice and flavor to the tropical
  draperies and bedspreads.
  The original rich, Mexican terra cotta tiles have been cleaned and preserved to
  emanate warmth along the sunny corridors with their golden trim. The large handmade
  tiles have random insets of hand-painted ceramics. Rooms are decorated in tropical
  highlights, some including artwork by Mary Wells, a member of the hotel’s founding
  family.
  Furthermore, the bathrooms have been refurbished with new high-end fixtures
  and tiles. The “Classic” rooms feature high-speed Internet access, mini-bars and new
  flat-screen televisions. The extensive renovations have expanded to include the creation
  of two new hospitality suites located above the Las Olas Boulevard shopping and
  nightlife scene. The suites exude casual elegance and include multiple flat-screen
  televisions, full wet bars for entertaining, a private bedroom and bath and a large outdoor
  terrace.
  Riverside Unveils New Renovations to its Lobby
  In celebration of its 70th anniversary, the Riverside Hotel unveiled extensive
  renovations and upgrades to its entire lobby, garden patio and first floor banquet rooms.
  A new front desk and reception area has been built in order to provide extensive
  concierge services for its guests. A 10-foot saltwater aquarium now serves as the main
  focal point in the room, but out of all of the new amenities, the hotel is most passionate
  about its new lounge, Preston’s.
  Named after one of its original founders, Preston A. Wells - who built the hotel
  with his brother John Wells in 1936 - Preston’s is a real turning point for the hotel. Before
  Preston’s, the Riverside Hotel had never featured a fully functional bar as part of its
  lobby.

Wells and John Wells as the Coast Guard Development Company, the Las Olas Company was originally established to acquire and rent beach and ocean front cottages in Fort Lauderdale.
