Death 25 August 1731  William Arms died on 25 August 1731 at Deerfield, MA.2 
Immigration   He immigrated. It is believed (family tradition?) that William came from the Channel Islands, possibly the Isle of Jersey.4 
Fact 1 6 April 1676  On 6 April 1676, at Hadley, MA,, The first record of his existence in Massachusetts is as a soldier under Captain Turner..1 
Residence 1677  According to the History of Deerfield, William Arms was at Hatfield in 1677, where he speculated in real estate.1 
Residence circa 1698  He moved to Deerfield about 1698, and settled at the south end of the street on "Arms Corner." He purchased Lot 21 from Thomas Hunt in that year; the record refers to him as "of Hatfield." The house built on that lot by his son John Arms is still there in 2005.1,5 
Fact 1   It appears to me that William Arms also speculated in real estate when he came to Deerfield, because he bought and sold lots #3, 4, and 26 between 1703 and 1717, apparently without living on them..6

Marriage   John Hawks married Elizabeth Browne, daughter of William Browne and Lydia Ward. 
Burial 30 June 1662  John Hawks was buried on 30 June 1662 at Hadley Cemetery, Hadley, MA.1 
Immigration between 1630 and 1634  He immigrated between 1630 and 1634 to Dorchester, MA. Imogene Hawks Lane states that he came with John Winthrop in June 1630. The Great Migration sketch states that "this is only a guess, and misreads the record." The first record of him according to Great Migration is when he was made freeman in Dorchester on September 3, 1634.2,3 
Residence circa 1635  About 1635 John Hawks moved with the Dorchester settlers who established Windsor, Connecticut.3 
Fact 1 18 April 1659  On 18 April 1659, at Hartford, CT,, John Hawks was one of the 59 signers of the agreement to found the settlement of Hadley, Massachusetts..1 
Residence 1659/60  John Hawls moved his family to his six-acre lot on the main street in the new town of Hadley either in the fall of 1659 or the spring of 1660.1 
Fact 1 1663  John Hawks may have died suddenly, because although he owned property, he did not leave a will. The 1663 court in Hadley decided, with Elizabeth's consent, how to divide his estate. John, the eldest son, was to receive one-third of the home lot and one-third of all the family lands when he reached age 22. The other two surviving sons were to receive twenty pounds each at age 21. Eldest daughter Elizabeth was to receive 20 pounds and the other four daughters were each to receive fifteen pounds. Elizabeth was named administrator of the estate..4

Note   Imogene Hawks Lane presented the evidence for the surname of Elizabeth. She was known to be a kinswoman of Nathaniel Ward of Hartford, because she was mentioned as such in his will. Nathaniel Ward died childless, and the other heirs named in his will were his sisters, nieces and nephews, so Elizabeth was probably a niece. The names of Nathaniel Ward's parents and siblings are known, based on his father's will. One of his sisters, Susan, died in 1626 and left money to her niece Elizabeth Browne, who was apparently the daughter of Lydia, another sister. I'm not sure how from this evidence we know that this niece Elizabeth Browne was the Elizabeth who married John Hawks. Possibly she just meant that niece Elizabeth Browne was the only other close family member not listed otherwise by name in Nathaniel Ward's will. I would like to research further. The Great Migration authors mentioned Mrs. Lane's work, but evidently did not subscribe to her arguments about Elizabeth's ancestry, because they did not mention it.1 
Fact 1 30 March 1674  Robert and Elizabeth Hinsdale did not get along. She was very different from his timid first wife. She soon left him and moved back to Hadley. She and Robert were charged on March 30, 1674 with "living assunder contrary to law" and also "lacivious and wanton carrage." Elizabeth was apparently cleared by the court, but Robert was sentenced to pay a fine and be whipped "ten stripes.".3 
Fact 1 1681  In 1681, "The Widow Elizabeth Hinsdall, administratrix to the estate of her former husband John Hawks" recorded an agreement with her two younger sons, Gershom and Eliezer, who were "yet unmarried and have their portions to receive," that they would invest their shares in the rest of her lands in Hadley and care for their mother, and then share the property between them upon her death..4

Fact 1 1704  In 1704, at Deerfield, MA,, He purchased Lot 18 on the main street in Deerfield, adjoining lot 17, which he had purchased in 1700. Family tradition has it that he built his house on Lot 18 in 1712. That house still stands in 2005..7,8 
Fact 1 29 February 1704  On 29 February 1704, The French and Indians attacked the town of Deerfield at night, killing or taking captive over half of the town's population. Eliezer's brother John, who lived farther north on the main street, lost his whole family, but because their home was at the very southern end of the street, the Indians did not get that far, and none of Eliezer's family was harmed..9 
Will 29 November 1725  Eliezer Hawks left a will on 29 November 1725 at Deerfield, MA. Eliezer Hawks' will made bequests to his children. Since the amounts given them differed, I assume that he had already given some of them land or money during his life, and his will was probably to make them equal. Land was given to sons Eliezer and John. Money was given to daughters Thankful Ashley, Mary Patterson, Elizabeth Stratton, Sarah Hawks, and Hannah Hawks. Sons Nathaniel and Eliezer were named executors. Witnesses to his signature were Moses Nash, Samuel Belding and William Arms.10
